Merge welcomes Ex Hex

We are delighted to announce the addition of Ex Hex to the Merge roster. Hailing from Washington, DC, Ex Hex is Mary Timony, Betsy Wright, and Laura Harris.
On the occasion of Ex Hex signing to Merge, Mary contributed the following information about the band:Ex Hex is what your older brother’s friends listened to. “Roxy Roller” and “Virginia Plain” rumbling from the Kenwood in the basement.
It’s what your babysitters listened to, and it’s what stuck with me.
Ex Hex is a power trio: guitar, drums, and bass.
We are thrilled to have found a home at Merge.
Ex Hex will release their debut album in 2014, and a tour is in the works including the SXSW Festival in March.

Blondfire Announce New Album Young Heart To Be Released February 2014
Blondfire Announce New Album Young HeartTo Be Released February 11, 2014Listen To New Track "Young Heart" Now
Los Angeles-based Blondfire are excited to announce the release of their new album, Young Heart, on February 11, 2014 on Tender Tender Rush. Young Heart is the band's first full-length album since their 2008 indie release My Someday. The set was mixed by Wally Gagel (Muse, Folk Implosion, Family Of The Year, Best Coast). The album was self-produced and most of it was written and recorded at guitar player Bruce Driscoll's home studio and Hollywood's historic Wax Studios (formerly TTG). To get a taste for the new album, listen to the title track by clicking the link below:
Listen: Blondfire - "Young Heart"
In the interim since the release of their last record, the band has developed a following through tours with Awol Nation, Foals, and Surfer Blood; festival plays at Lollapalooza, Firefly, and Summerfest; and radio airplay from several taste maker stations nationwide. Singer Erica Driscoll can be heard on the new Avicii record. She and brother Bruce co-wrote "Liar Liar" with the artist when he sought them out for their lush indie sound.
Their music has also been heard in a national ad campaign for Honda Civic, the films Besties andGet a Job; on TV via ESPN's Australian Open Tennis, The Client List, CBS' Star Crossed, MTV's Awkward and The Collection.
Blondfire became the first unsigned act to hit the #1 spot on the iTunes Alternative chart and one of very few unsigned bands to be added to the Sirius Alt Nation playlist, on the strength of the evocative, bouncy "Where The Kids Are" and its arty video. "Where The Kids Are" is the lead single from the new album and was released earlier this year.
Blondfire are Bruce and Erica Driscoll, siblings who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan; their U.S.-born dad plucked classic rock and pop on the guitar, while their Brazilian mom - a classically trained pianist - exposed them to bossa nova and music lessons.

Emily Jane White shares new song w/ Stereogum
EMILY JANE WHITE SHARES “KEELEY” WITH STEREOGUM

NEW ALBUM BLOOD/LINES OUT NOVEMBER 19 ON IMPORTANT RECORDS

LISTEN TO “KEELEY” ON SOUNDCLOUD HERE
Today Emily Jane White pleases us with her second single “Keeley” from upcoming album, Blood / Lines, set for release November 19th on Important Records. “Keeley” premiered on Stereogum who’ve hailed it as the “…burning core of a Bat For Lashes or Chelsea Wolfe song stripped of all its rhythmic bombast, left to passionately crackle with minimal percussion and maximum melodrama.” Emily Jane White’s songwriting is at once generous and tough-minded, reflective and unsentimental - possessing the confidence of a singular voice, inspired by the raveled threads of the uncanny in American culture, including depression-era blues and post-Victorian gothic literature.
Blood / Lines is a collection of gorgeously dark song vignettes built on a foundation of reverbed emotion, rhythmic drive, and minor-key pop sensibility. After releasing three albums in three years, Oakland’s Emily Jane White wrote over 100 sketches between January 2011 and October 2012. Blood / Lines is a selected compilation of these songs. Recorded in a secluded studio in Sonoma County, California, the quiet environment provided Emily a place to explore new directions and to grasp creative control. With the help of her friends and collaborators Wainwright Hewlett, Shawn Alpay, Marissa Nadler, Nick Ott, and Darwin Meiners, her songs diversify with strings, backing vocals, bass, and heavy drums.
Emily doesn’t wallow in morbidity; instead she considers her work to be unifying, an empathetic reflection on the universality of adversity. Blood/Lines displays loyalty to dark and somber atmospheres through bright sounds, heavy drive, and bold arrangements. Love, anger, and violence move through each vignette. Kinship generates complex intimacies. Love can entrap the unwary and betray the devoted.

LUPA EP OUT 11/12 VIA AGOO/KNOW THY NEIGHBOUR

"THE SPARROW IN THE LEMON TREE"
TRACK VIA FADER
VIDEO VIA IMPOSE MAGAZINE
Brighton's A Lily has shared "The Sparrow In The Lemon Tree". The track is 4 minutes of bedroom folk bliss. The video is beautifully shot and features James Vella's grandparents ballroom dancing. The track is from A Lily's new EP, Lupa, due out 11/12 on Know Thy Neighbour/Agoo Records.
ABOUT A LILY:A Lily is the solo project of Brighton’s James Vella (yndi halda, Saint Coltrane, Fat Cat Records).
Lupa is an EP of self-produced tracks that trails forthcoming full-length Roma. Both EP and album reference the ancient Roman tale of Romulus and Remus – two brothers raised from childhood by a feral wolf, eventually fighting to the death over the formation of the city of Rome.
The Romulus and Remus story is magical, surreal, occasionally warm and occasionally vicious. Lyrically and musically, Lupa follows a similar line. It marries dark imagery with harmonious pop forms, softly-whispered vocal deliveries with dense textual arrangements delivered by a broad palette of instrumentation. There are choral vocals, waves of distortion, string quartet arrangements and roughly-hewn bedroom folk across its four tracks.
Also included as influences for the making of Roma and Lupa are astronomer Carl Sagan, Twin Peaks characters, K Records founder Calvin Johnson and actress Penelope Cruz. The list is more revealing than one might expect: both records can be seen as studies of wonder, mystery and beauty, all tied within a poetic and descriptive narrative.
Recorded entirely at home over several months, almost every instrument was performed by Vella with some additional help from some guest musicians, including Mice Parade’s Adam Pierce and Emiliana Torrini. As a live act, the A Lily band has expanded and contracted to comprise – at various times - a brass ensemble, classical percussion, electronics and keyboards, and multi-part vocal harmonies, but has now settled on a core three-piece based around guitar, keyboard, bass, drumkit and voice. Previous live ventures have seen shows with Amiina, Peter Broderick, Silver Apples, yndi halda, Silje Nes and Memoryhouse.
A Lily’s previous recorded outings span the organic / electronic laptop, home recording and drone debut album wake:sleep (Dynamophone Records, 2006), an EP of longing Americana named I Dress My Ankles With God’s Sweetest Words (Dynamophone, 2008) and Japan-only pure pop record Thunder Ate The Iron Tree (p*dis, 2011). Vella also co-founded yndi halda and Saint Coltrane, and will shortly publish a short story collection entitled Devourings (Wounded Wolf Press, 2013), a similar expression of the dream-like and surreal to Roma and Lupa.

Darkstar Announce 'HD7' EP // Stream Zomby Remix

RELEASED NOVEMBER 26
STREAM ZOMBY AND THE CULT REMIX NOW

Listen to “You Don't Need A Weatherman (cult x zomby remix (kollaps))” :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw3OYpluod0&feature=youtu.be Darkstar are pleased to announce HD7, the second in a duo of remix EPs released this year, following01484. HD7 sees Darkstar remixing another two tracks taken from their latest album, News From Nowhere as well as a rare contribution from enigmatic producer Zomby alongside his Cult Music project.
Tracklist:
A1. Timeaway (Darkstar Remix)
B1. Hold Me Down (Darkstar Remix)
B2. You Don't Need A Weatherman (cult x zomby remix (kollaps))
The A-side sees Darkstar flexing their house music muscles, firmly cementing their prowess as remixers by transforming two of their own tracks into playful, percussion-heavy grooves. For their remix of ‘Timeaway’, the band tease the original steel drum-esque melody before twisting it, looping it and bringing it in and out of the mix seemingly at will, while pitch-shifted cowbells flutter around lo-fi, Balearic synths. Their reworking of “Hold Me Down” is more of a slow burner, and sees layers of falsetto vocal samples, shrill synth stabs and crisp hi-hats steadily build around a bouncy bassline before it all swiftly retreats, leaving nothing more than a dreamy, ambient drone.
The B-side of HD7 features an exceptionally rare remix offering from notorious New York-based producer Zomby, alongside his Cult Music project under the moniker Kollaps. Typically, his remix of “You Don’t Need A Weatherman” sees him enveloping the track in a beautifully murky layer of smog, with the vocals becoming merely a faint whisper in the background. It’s the kind of impossibly dark and emotive sound we’ve come to expect from Zomby.

THE KILLS Concert Film, North American December dates

On November 12th 2011, The Kills played the first of two sold out shows at the prestigious L'Olympia Theatre in Paris. Three thousand tickets a night had been sold. After coming off stage at one of the wildest shows of their career, Jamie and Alison turned to each other and said – "we have to film tomorrow night's show!"
Overnight, the call was put out via Facebook, asking if anyone would come and film the second show for them. At soundcheck the next day, Sunday. November 13th 2011, a group of friends and fans assembled to capture that night's equally stunning show for posterity.Director Anita Ribeyrol, along with editors Olivier Aslanian and Sylvain Calves then assembled the footage into the raw, sweat drenched concert movie that The Kills are proud to launch exclusively in partnership with Equipment.

Parquet Courts Announce 2014 Dates
PARQUET COURTS ANNOUNCE 2014 TOUR DATES
LISTEN TO TWO OF THIS YEAR'S BEST RECORDS IN LIGHT UP GOLD AND "TALLY ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU BROKE"
It's certainly been a year to remember for Parquet Courts. Not only did they release one of the most internationally acclaimed albums of the year in Light Up Gold , they toured virtually non-stop for 9 months and somehow found time to record and release "Tally All The Things That You Broke," an EP that both "gave the people what they wanted," but also stretched out the Parquet Courts sonic palette. Rolling Stone named them a "Band To Watch,"Sound Opinions' hosts Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis listed LUG as one of their favorite albums of the year, Pitchfork devoted a Rising feature to the band, SPIN named LUG one of their "essential" records of the year, and on top of that, Bill Ferguson of The New York Times Magazine and Rob Sheffield on Rolling Stone wrote what are essentially love letters to the band. Also, check out today's "Guest List" feature on Pitchfork with co-frontman Andrew Savage.
The band is taking some much needed time off at the close of their banner year, but they pick up right where they left off in January of 2014 with a hometown show followed by some west coast dates and a slot on the Australian traveling Laneway Festival. Don't miss one of the most talked about bands of the year as they begin their effort to be the band of next year as well!

Deltron 3030 Premieres New Video via Esquire
DELTRON 3030 DEBUTS "MELDING OF THE MINDS" VIDEO, PREMIERED VIA ESQUIRE
CURRENTLY ON FALL TOUR, SELECT DATES FT. 3030 ORCHESTRA
NEW ALBUM DELTRON 3030: EVENT II OUT NOW VIA BULK RECORDINGS
Deltron 3030 is excited to release their video for "Melding of the Minds," which premiered via Esquire . Justin Lee directed the animated video, and said the concept for the video was inspired by the song, reminding him of "the feeling you get when you're out in the city late at night tagging and running in the shadows." As a result, the video features, in Lee's words, "a badass little b-girl" being chased by an unidentifiable, though certainly unnerving, monster. The track features Zack De La Rocha and is off the group's new album Deltron 3030: Event II , out now on Bulk Recordings. The clip is available for streaming/embed HERE.
Deltron 3030 is currently in the midst of its fall tour in support of the new album. The tour features a sixteen-piece orchestra -- dubbed the 3030 Orchestra -- on select dates, noted below, in addition to the three-piece touring band. Additionally, Juan Alderete, known for his work in The Mars Volta andRacer X, will play bass throughout the tour.
Deltron 3030: Event II received much praise upon its release. The New York Times noted, "Del the Funky Homosapien hasn't lost his verbose velocity, and his partners retain their gift for brooding airs and funk grandeur." Positing the new album alongside its predecessor, FILTER praised Deltron 3030: Event II as "a gem in its own merit." XXL lauded Del's MC skills, saying he "effervescently glides on and off beat and into double time while nonchalantly flipping sci-fi slang." HipHopDX called the record "a worthy follow-up, well-thought-out standalone project, and a very necessary commentary on society, government, and machinations by which the two interact." Gizmodo noted "The best news in all of this is that after more than a decade of building anticipation, the new album holds up. Actually, it really holds up. The beats are no less incredible, and the lyrics are no less weird and compelling. In fact, there are a lot of parallels between this alien dreamscape and our own, which make the album feel especially relevant." Deltron 3030: Event II , which is available at iTunes, Amazon and local retailers, is Deltron 3030's long-awaited successor to their self-titled cult-classic debut. Deltron 3030 -- composed of a trinity of alt-rap all-stars: rapper Del The Funky Homosapien, producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamuraand DJ Kid Koala. Individually, the collaborators of Deltron 3030 stand at the top of their respective musical disciplines; together as Deltron 3030, they warped space, bent time, transcended genre and blew minds with Deltron 3030, an album that still stands today as one of the most important records in the annals of underground hip-hop.
