Marissa Nadler Announces New Album on Sacred Bones/Bella Union

Marissa Nadler Signs To Sacred Bones/Bella Union
Sixth Album July To Be Released On February 4th
Stream First Track 'Dead City Emily' at Pitchfork or Soundcloud

Boston-based singer Marissa Nadler has shared the first track, Dead City Emily, off her forthcoming sixth full-length album, July, coming out on February 4th on Sacred Bones (US) and February 11th on Bella Union (ROW).  Recorded at Seattle's Avast Studio, the album pairs Nadler for the first time with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room). Dunn matches Nadler's darkness by creating a multi-colored sonic palette that infuses new dimensions into her songs. Eyvand Kang's strings, Steve Moore's synths, and Phil Wandscher's guitar lines escalate the whole affair to a panoramic level of beautiful, eerie wonder. Her voice, too, is something to behold here, at once clarion but heavy with the kind of tear-stained emotion you hear on scratchy old country records by Tammy Wynette and Sammi Smith. Long gone are the days when Nadler summoned images of 1960s folk singers who got lost in the woods. She is a cosmic force on July, shooting these songs to euphoric highs and heartbreaking lows.

The world of Nadler's July, is one where you're likely to find the Boston-based singer and songwriter "holed up at the Holiday Inn" watching crime TV or leaving her instruments to freeze in the car. These settings, details, and themes are brand-new to Nadler's canon, and they paint a far more realistic version of her life than her previous records. The results are astonishing and occasionally reminiscent of David Lynch (who is, appropriately enough, among her label mates on Sacred Bones). As Pitchforkonce wrote, her songs are "as gorgeous as they are elliptical and intriguing."

July is the kind of release that reminds you why NPR counts Nadler's songwriting as so "revered among an assortment of tastemakers." This is a singular achievement for the artist, a record she couldn't have made earlier in her career because, as every songwriter knows, she didn't just write these songs: She lived them.

David Lynch shares new track, 12" single out tomorrow

DAVID LYNCH SHARES NEW TRACK
VIA
BAD THE JOHN BOY 12" OUT TOMORROW                                                                                                                                                   Photo courtesy of Dean Hurley
As previously announced, David Lynch's 12" single entitled Bad The John Boy is out tomorrow on Sacred Bones Records and today we are proud to share the title track with you. Lynch and his producer Dean Hurley conceived this harrowing track while in the process of creating The Big Dream. Lynch's vocal approach alongside the track's throbbing pulse provides an unsettling & thrilling listen. Find the stream & order links below!

LISTEN: "Bad The John Boy" BUY: Bad The John Boy -

About  Bad The John Boy:
On the heels of David Lynch’s hugely successful sophomore full length, The Big Dream, comes a very limited edition 12-inch, “Bad the John Boy.” While technically this track qualifies as a non-album or bonus track, Dean Hurley, Lynch’s producer had this to say about the song: “it wasn’t really recorded with the LP in mind, but it was done around the end of last year when the bulk of the album was being made. It was earmarked for something else entirely, but that thing didn’t happen in a way that required the song... so up until now, it was ‘a song with no home.’ ” Complimenting Lynch’s left-of-center A-side, the B-side proudly features a Venetian Snares remix of the album’s title track. Despite the fact that Canadian electronic musician Aaron Funk has been known for reinventing breakcore, with this remix he breathes a completely new approach into the song, turning it into something far from your typical dance remix. Hurley describes this track as, “music for the end crawl of a bootlegged sci-fi/horror film that you borrowed from your friend’s older brother and caused you to realize for the first time that you were actually scared in broad daylight.”

Basia Bulat- NPR's World Cafe Airs, US Tour Starts

BASIA BULAT PERFORMS ON NPR’S “WORLD CAFE”,
THIS WEEK’S GUEST EDITOR ON MAGNET

TALL TALL SHADOW  OUT NOW ON SECRET CITY RECORDSON TOUR NOW
“Ms. Bulat has a voice well suited to interiority, warm and honeyed…”—The New York Times  Basia Bulat's performance on NPR's World Cafe with David Dye airs as part of their 'Sense of Place' feature on Toronto. Basia is also the Guest Editor on Magnet Magazine's website this week, as she kicks off her US headlining tour dates. You can listen to her NPR World Cafe performance HERE and view her Guest Editor at Magnet HERE. Please see below for full tour routing. Bulat co-produced Tall Tall Shadow with Tim Kingsbury of Arcade Fire and Mark Lawson, Grammy-winning engineer of Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. The album is inspired in equal parts by tragic loss and abundant joy, which is reflected in more directly personal, emotional lyrics. It marks a sonic departure from her earlier work, moving away from her long-time practice of writing songs on the guitar or autoharp and instead primarily using piano and charango, an instrument which Bulat has been unable to put down since receiving it from a friend. Bulat chose to work with Lawson and Kingsbury knowing that they would not only challenge her but also push her music to new places. Several cuts on Tall Tall Shadow were recorded during live, full band takes, an achievement she attributes to the creative environment nurtured by her two co-producers. The album also features the work of one of her favorite collaborators, her brother Bobby. The album follows Bulat’s 2007 debut album Oh, My Darling and 2010’s Heart of My Own, of which NPR Music says Bulat’s voice is “a single powerful element.” SPIN praises the Juno-nominated singer’s “bright harmonies and … resonant alto voice” and Mother Jones raves, “this crafty Canadian folkie turns seemingly simple songs into engrossing accounts of desire and regret.” Bulat has garnered great critical acclaim; Pitchfork praises her “rare, extraordinary voice,” and Filter declares “Bulat can pine with the best of them.” She has toured in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia sharing the stage with artists including St. Vincent, Tune-Yards, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird and Nick Cave. She has also collaborated with Owen Pallett, who created orchestral arrangements of a selection of Bulat’s songs that have been performed by the Halifax Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. BASIA BULAT TOUR DATESNovember 7                                                        Chicago, IL                                                  Schubas

The Casket Girls Announce New Album True Love Kills The Fairy Tale

The Casket Girls Announce New Album True Love Kills The Fairy TaleSophomore LP Out Feburary 11 On Graveface Records "The Casket Girls sound like homespun electronic kindred spirits to School of Seven Bells, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Au Revoir Simone, and other  dream-pop groups centered around swirling sisterly vocals." - SPIN
"The Casket Girls' brand of goth pop is definitely dark, but it's a perfect mixture of doom and optimism that keeps you hanging on every word." - Bust
"creepy cool - emphasis on creepy" - The Washington Post
Watch: True Love Kills The Fairy Tale Album Trailer via YouTube  Listen: "Holding You Back" via The Fader
The Casket Girls will return this winter with their sophomore album True Love Kills The Fairy Tale out February 11 on Graveface Records. The album follows up their critically acclaimed debut album Sleepwalking, a limited edition Record Store Day EP and cassingle released earlier this year on Cassette Store Day. The tape acted as competition between the two new songs,  "Holding You Back"  and "Suddenly" vying for space on True Love Kills The Fairy Tale. Fans voted on the band's Facebook page and chose "Holding You Back" to be included on the new album. The Casket Girls just released an album trailer, which features three tracks from True Love Kills The Fairy Tale. You can check it out on Graveface Records YouTube Channel.
So many pieces of Savannah, GA three-piece The Casket Girls seemed to happen by accident. From their beginning - when electronic sound-shaper Ryan Graveface (Graveface Records, Dreamend, Black Moth Super Rainbow) found sisters Phaedra and Elsa Greene under a tree in one of Savannah's many squares, playing Autoharp and singing bizarre songs - to the night they composed their sophomore album, True Love Kills the Fairy Tale, under circumstances that fall somewhere between séance and dream state, nearly everything about The Casket Girls seems to have been inspired by some kind of spooky happenstance. But then again, the Greene sisters don't believe in accidents.
"I dropped off a shit ton of songs to the girls to work on one night," Graveface says of the genesis ofTrue Love, the follow up to Casket Girls' critically acclaimed 2012 debut. "I went back to check on their progress, because they weren't answering their phones. I don't know if they dropped acid or what, but I walked in and Elsa was sobbing and reciting poetry while Phaedra was just staring straight ahead writing it all down, like catatonic. The next day they dropped off a CD and said, 'We don't even know what's on this. You can throw it in the garbage if you want.' I sat down and listened all the way through and cried. I was like, 'Holy shit! They actually wrote a record like that!' I booked studio time and had them re-record every note just as it was on the demo. They really didn't remember any of it.  Had to learn the songs as if someone else had written them entirely. Very bizarre."
Phaedra and Elsa had filled the disc with lilting, almost whimsical melodies about chemical hazes and love gone sour like a couple of fucked up Shangri-las, to which Graveface added a bevy of grinding, multi-dimensional psych-rock keys that will be familiar to anyone with a Graveface LP in their collection. The title track speaks like an unknown voice in a lucid dream - perhaps the one that conveyed these songs through the veil in the first place -beckoning, "True love kills the fairy tale... until heart and lungs fail."  It's this twisted and comforting charm, which set in motion the Graveface-Greene love affair in the first place, that relieves us from fear.
The Casket Girls have gained momentum and a substantial cult following due to the unflagging catchiness of their songwriting and the compelling development of their live stage show. They spent the last year and a half touring in support of BMSR and The Faint before growing into headliners in their own right. Last year, they released a self-titled EP on Record Store Day, and a "cassingle" cassette store day.
The trio will hit the road for a slew of US dates, followed by a sojourn through Europe. Visitcasketgirls.org to for tour date developments, new-music nuggets and more.

Please download your advance, promotional copy of Beachwood Sparks' remastered, previously unreleased, debut album, Desert Skies
-
Out November 26th, 2013 on Alive Naturalsound Records

Beachwood Sparks is a Los Angeles based group that has become slightly well known for keeping the embers of West Coast country rock burning.
Formed in the summer of 1997 from the ashes of the decidedly indie rock groups Further and Strictly Ballroom, the six musicians gathered at the intersection of Beachwood Dr. and Sparks St. (not kidding) and began rehearsals for their new band. Not even the rains of El Niño could douse the flaming sword of psychedelic country rock that they forged in that shed over the course of that summer. And now from the same folks who brought you their debut 7" single comes the unheard "lost" record that ignited that original fire.
Crackling with lo-fi energy left over from the Further days and pillowed by the mellow psych-country folk that Beachwood Sparks would come to be known for, Desert Skies features remastered and unheard mixes and is a perfect snapshot of a band playing what they feel, unaffected by anything other than their own lives and surroundings; in this case deserts, beaches and canyons.
Desert Skies was recorded by the original six piece line up of Brent Rademaker (bass/vocals), Chris Gunst (guitar/vocals), "Farmer Dave" Scher (lap steel/organ/vocals), Josh Schwartz (guitar/vocals), Pete "Sleigher" Kinne (percussion/vocals) and Tom Sanford (drums/vocals). Untitled at the time, the record was made at Josh's studio "The Space Shed", nestled in the sleepy foothill village of Sierra Madre.  It was originally intended for release on the Christmas/xmAs label run by Brent out of his house on Sparks St. in Burbank. Desert Skies is a homemade Southern Californian affair, a time machine that sends you back to the time of their defining summer residency at Spaceland in Silver Lake when the band was regionally known for its dynamic live shows, opening for the likes of Beck and Lou Barlow.
Beachwood Sparks would eventually slim down to a four piece, parting ways with Josh, Tom and Pete and go on to release three albums; Beachwood Sparks, Once We Were Trees and The Tarnished Gold(Sub Pop Records), along with a handful of singles. Josh released his acclaimed Painted Hills record in 2010 (Bird Song/Parasol). Tom went on to drumming with other groups and to his own beat as an ecologist in Humbolt County. Pete "Sleigher" Kinne sadly passed away in Hawaii in 2005, leaving behind a small but heavily-admired batch of solo recordings. Brent, Chris and Farmer Dave continue to carry the torch of Beachwood Sparks along with various other musical and life endeavors.
Desert Skies can remind us all of a magical time 15 short summers ago. Like the song says, "losers need some winnings and stories need beginnings" and this was the beginning of Beachwood Sparks.

For Against Box Set & The Servants Double LP Out December 3rd

For Against Box Set & The Servants Double LP
Out December 3rd
The Servants was an indie band formed in 1985 in Hayes, Middlesex, England by singer and songwriter David Westlake. Their brand of the mid-80′s jangly guitar-pop was intellectual, refined and classy as opposed to the shambolic and noisy lo-fi scene heralded by the C-86 compilation they would appear on and be connected with during their active career. After lots of lineup changes (including past/future members of The Auteurs and The Housemartins) and a string of great singles and one great LP (“Disinterest”) the band called it a day in 1991.
Available the first time on vinyl, Small Time (1991) and Hey Hey We're the Manquées (1990) make up the second (and third!) reissues Captured Tracks is offering from The Servants, following Youth Club Disco. This set of hidden gems shine a light on the band's layered, jangly guitars and sophisticated vocals that will delight fans of the band and fans of jangle pop everywhere.
For Against. Captured Tracks will be reissuing the first three full lengths from seminal Lincoln, Nebraska post-punk trio, For Against. Originally released by Independent Project between 1984-1990, these releases will see their first vinyl appearance in over 20 years in a deluxe edition limited boxed set. Remastered by Words on Music (by Marc Ostermeier of Should), the set will feature a bonus booklet and ephemera from the bands early career. For Against was an anomaly within the midwestern post-punk climate, offering melodic and dreamy hook-laden songs in stark contrast to the post-hardcore sounds of the time. With this release, their firmament and place within today's current crop of guitar-based indie bands should be made secure.
The For Against 3xLP Box Set will be available in a limited run of 1,000. Each LP has an individual jacket that recreates the original album art and includes a 12 page 12x24" booklet with full color photos and liner notes. All of this comes packaged in a beautiful midnight blue matte wrap box with gold foil stamping.
