Tacocat's NVM out today!
TACOCAT'S NVM OUT NOW! WATCH "ENHANCED" VERSION OF "CRIMSON WAVE" VIDEO
VIDEO - "Crimson Wave" [enhanced version]
VIDEO - "Crimson Wave" [dir. Marcy Stone-Francois]
MP3 - "Crimson Wave"
MP3 - "Bridge to Hawaii"
Today, we're proud to release NVM, the new record from Seattle-based pop-punk feminists Tacocat. To celebrate, the band will play a free, all-ages in-store at 6 PM this evening at Sonic Boom Records (2209 NW Market St). The band’s music video for their wildly popular, feel-good menstrual anthem of the year, “Crimson Wave," has now been updated as an enhanced video that features factoids, jokes, and other captions which appear throughout in the grand tradition of '90s music television (for legal reasons, let's say their inspiration rhymes with "shmop-shmup shmideo").
The band sets out on a nationwide tour early next month, including multiple showcases at SXSW. See below for a full list of dates. Review copies of NVM are available upon request.
About the record:
Like a fluorescent-lit snack-aisle oasis in some desolate interstate road stop, brimming with Skittles and limited-edition Sno Balls, Tacocat's Easter-egg-hued pop-punk-pop is bubblegum-sticky with hooks, bound to brighten up the most drab stretch of bummer backroad.
The band's four-person, seven-layer-burrito came together organically: Lelah Maupin (drums) and Eric Randall (guitar) met in their native Longview, WA—two hours south of Seattle, the very town that Green Day named their breakout debut single after. Lelah's family room was wallpapered with framed Magic Eye posters, hence "Stereogram," the cross-eyed love letter to that bizarre ‘90s optical fad. She met lanky Eric while both worked at Safeway, wearing the chain's distinctive navy aprons before breaking north to Seattle. Eric's band The Trashies practiced and played in the basement of the 24/7 House in the Central District, where Long Beach, CA native Bree McKenna (bass) was living, amongst the dust, boxes, and spiders. Lelah met Butte, MT native Emily Nokes (voice, tambourine) in one excruciatingly early/boring graphic design class, slipping her a doodled-upon note; she soon noticed Emily's big voice while she sang along with R. Kelly on the radio. Emily and Bree hit it off one sloshy night at the Comet. Eric impressed Emily with his reenactments of scenes from Anaconda. Sometime around 2007, via countless raucous house party shows, the legend of Tacocat was born.
The foursome would quickly make a name for themselves with their simply energizing power pop, drawing on classic Northwest energy with an uncommonly upbeat, surfy swag that could only come from gray skies and hydroponic sunshine. Their sly and unabashed ‘90s revivalism has, in the past, found the band pondering Evan Dando and Waterworld—and Bree herself explains finding about riot grrrl via Napster and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. They've described themselves variously as "Feminist sci-fi" and "Equal parts Kurt and Courtney"; oh well, whatever…NVM

Mike Love of The Beach Boys Releases New Song in Tribute
MIKE LOVE OF THE BEACH BOYS RELEASES NEW SONG IN TRIBUTE TO GEORGE HARRISON
PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACK "PISCES BROTHERS" AVAILABLE NOW TO STREAM VIA SOUNDCLOUD at http://bit.ly/1mBKtEe
LOS ANGELES, CA - FEBRUARY 25, 2014 - Legendary singer/songwriter Mike Love, co-founder of The Beach Boys has officially released "Pisces Brothers," a solo single in tribute to The Beatles' George Harrison, who would have been 71 today. The previously unreleased track was written in 2004 and inspired by a shared trip to India in 1968 when Love joined The Beatles, Donovan, actress Mia Farrow and others in search of spiritual enlightenment through the teachings of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
For Love, the song is a special reminiscence: "This being the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to America, I wanted to commemorate this incredibly significant trip we all took together to India, at the Maharishi's invitation. It was enormously influential on all of us, most especially George. The song is really sentimental for me, and meant to honor George Harrison's remarkable contribution to music. And how, in this one moment in time, we got together, as the song says, not fortune or for fame, but for enlightenment."
Mike Love titled the song "Pisces Brothers," as he and Harrison shared the same astrological sign, and celebrated their birthdays together in India. A number of Beatles and Beach Boys songs grew out of the 1968 trip including the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" and "Sexy Sadie" as well as The Beach Boys "Anna Lee, the Healer." Love has continued the practice of Transcendental Meditation for over 40 years.
On February 20th, Love received The Ella Award by the Society of Singers, where he joined a prestigious array of previous honorees including Smokey Robinson, Elton John, Celine Dion, Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and the award's namesake, Ella Fitzgerald. The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, was filled with one-of-a-kind musical performances. Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston, as well as music legends, Bill Medley, Dean Torrence, Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and America all performed and spoke of Love's legacy in music and accomplishments as a singer and songwriter. Stars including Rita Wilson, Lucy Lawless and John Stamos also delivered poignant tributes to Love and his extraordinary half-century career in music.
For the first time ever, David Lee Roth and Mike Love took the stage in a duet of "California Girls" which was a hit song for both of them. Love also brought The Waters Family (also honored by the Society of Singers) on stage to debut a new original Mike Love song, "Unleash the Love."

PANELS AND CONVERSATIONS
The Future of Creativity
World-renowned futurists, philosophers and artists tackle the big questions: What will art look like and sound like 20, 50, 100 years from now? How will it be made and how will it be consumed? What will be the tools of creative expression in the future? Three keynote addresses by Oxford University philosopher Nick Bostrom; Jerome C. Glenn, CEO of the Millennium Project; and bioethicist, transhumanist, and futurist George Dvorsky.
Dance, Dance, Dance to Let's Dance: A Masterclass by Nile Rodgers
For the first time ever, one of music's greatest producers will reveal the intimate details behind all of his biggest recordings. We'll listen to a selection of his classics from beginning to end, and after each Nile Rodgers will tell us the stories behind each one, from inspiration to songwriting to collaboration to recording, pulling back the curtain on what goes into making timeless hits with David Bowie, Daft Punk, Diana Ross, Madonna, Chic, and more.
The Pioneers of Electronic Music Instruments
Don Buchla invented one of the first modular synthesizers. Roger Linn invented the drum machine. Tom Oberheim founded four electronic instrument companies. Dave Smith is the "Father of MIDI". David Borden is one of the earliest composers of electronic music. All will be sharing their histories and discussing the inspirations for the inventions that changed the course of music.
Innovators In Electronic Music
In-depth discussions with four geniuses who forever changed the sound of music. Herb Deutsch, an early collaborator with Bob Moog, performs a musical talk "From Moog to Mac". Malcolm Cecil built synthesizers for Stevie Wonder and invented T.O.N.T.O., the first multitimbral polyphonic synthesizer. Electronic music pioneer Giorgio Moroder brought the synthesizer into film music. Plus Dave Tompkins, author of How To Wreck a Nice Beach , surveys the history of the vocoder, from World War II espionage to the auto-tuning of pop music.
The Math and Science of The Simpsons and Futurama
Simon Singh, author of The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets , leads the creator of Futurama David X. Cohen, plus Futurama/The Simpsons writers Stewart Burns, Jeff Westbrook and Ken Keeler (who happens to have a PhD in applied math from Harvard and holds a Masters degree in electrical engineering from Stanford), through the mysterious math and science riddles weaved into to countless episodes of two of the greatest TV shows ever, with screenings of key scenes.

Music Makers, presented by MAKE Magazine
In the spirit of Bob Moog, music lovers and crazed inventors have created new instruments from the oddest materials, and MAKE Magazine invites everyone to tweak, hack, and bend technology to their own will. Presentations and performances, hosted by MAKE's editor Mark Frauenfelder, with Forrest Mims, author of Getting Started in Electronics; composer Nicolas Collins, author of Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking; Drew Blanke aka Dr. Blankenstein, mad scientist of analog synthesizers and atari punks; Jay Silver, founder of Makey Makey; and hacker/inventor Tom Zimmerman.
Science Fiction & the Synthesized Sound, presented by OMNI Reboot
Turn on the radio in the year 3000, and what will you hear? When we make first contact with an alien race, will we—as in Close Encounters of the Third Kind—communicate through melody? If the future has a sound, what can it possibly be? OMNI Reboot has assembled a crack team of future dreamers to answer these, and many more, questions. We will picture the mundane realities of the future, provide a soundtrack to science-fiction landscapes, ponder what science fiction film music tells us about our expectations for tomorrow, and hazard some guesses at the musical aesthetics of extraterrestrials. With writer Martine Syms, artist Neal Reinhalda, musician King Britt, astronomer Doug Vakoch, and OMNI Reboot editor Claire Evans.

A new generation of visual artists and designers are using innovative technological tools to create immersive, interactive narratives unlike any ever experienced before. The brains behind visionary visuals and immersive interactions for Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Flying Lotus and Skrillex share their secrets. With Willo Perron, Aaron Koblin, Alex Leiu, and David Wexler.
Sonification and Cybernetics
Can you visualize music as data? Professor Bruce Walker of Georgia Institute of Technology's Sonification Lab discusses new technologies that illustrate information with sound. Can you see colors as sounds? Contemporary artist Neil Harbisson was born with the inability to see color. With a prosthetic device called an "eyeborg," he can now hear the spectrum and create symphonies out of everything he sees, and has become the planet's first human cyborg. Harbisson will perform live and talk about the launch of the Cyborg Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to help people become cyborgs and promote cybernetics in the arts.
What Does Play Sound Like? Presented by Kill Screen
From the wakka wakka of Pac-Man to the immersive soundscapes of Grand Theft Auto, sound design has been one of the unsung heroes of games. Videogame arts and culture company Kill Screen is bringing together some of the best minds inside and outside games including Daedalus, Matthew Lee Johnston, Matt Bock, Robin Arnott, Karla Zimonja and Gretta Cohn, to talk about creating interactivity with sound.

"...a fiery mix of energetic pop." - KCRW
Stream Roman Remains 'Zeal' at Hype Machine Now
Roman Remains, the duo comprised of The Duke Spirit's Liela Moss and Toby Butler, are releasing their debut full-length, Zeal, on March 4th via Dhani Harrison's H.O.T. Records Ltd. Hype Machine is offering an exclusive stream of the album this week. Click here to listen! The North London natives have been doing a packed, month-long residency at the Sayers Club in Los Angeles, and are preparing to embark on a national tour through SXSW with Gary Nunman and Big Black Delta. Some have described the Roman Remains recent shows at Sayers Club as "amazing," and "like Bjork meets Zola Jesus meets early Nine Inch Nails." Even H.O.T. Records Ltd owner Dhani Harrison (George's son) is such a fan, he's been playing keyboard with them on their first performances.
The album Zeal sees Roman Remains feverishly cross the line between Electro, Industrial and Dance music. Liela Moss's spiritual, earthy and sometimes tongue-in-cheek lyrics and inimitable vocal style give the album a tantalizing, alluring feel that draws it's audience into another realm. Moss has been cited as Philip Lim's 'muse,' and inspired Alexander McQueen's 2009 fashion line for Target. She attended this year's New York Fashion Week, reporting from the front row at several shows.
If you are headed to SXSW this year check out the Roman Remains tour schedule below with noted times and venues. Also be sure to check out the Marcus McSweeney-directed video for the album's first single, 'This Stone Is Starting To Bleed,' which premiered at Rolling Stone and was deemed by KCRW as a "fiery mix of energetic pop."

Band Readies Tour with Gary Numan and Big Black Delta To SXSW
"...our jam of the whole weekend." - NYLON
"[Roman Remains] channels synth-punk fury." - Rolling Stone

"Eagulls is a debut not to miss this year" - Stereogum
Since forming in 2009, Leeds-based Eagulls have become synonymous with a discontented, disillusioned kind of anger, molded into bullets of post punk that's rife with urgency and aggression.
Brought together by drummer Henry Ruddell and guitarist Mark 'Goldy' Goldsworthy, they were later joined by friends Liam Matthews on guitar and Tom Kelly on bass. After struggling to find a singer that fitted with their vision for the band, they roped in George Mitchell to be their frontman without ever having heard him sing before.
For a band like Eagulls, touring is their lifeblood, as shown through the relentless bouts of gigging that have colored their four years together, in between working tedious day jobs in the bars and retail outlets of Leeds together. Booking support slots with the likes of Iceage, Merchandise, Parquet Courts, and Fucked Up they've carved out a reputation for chaotic and confrontational live shows.
Now, following further standalone releases, their self-titled debut album is complete and slated for release on March 4, 2014. Finessing the incensed spirit of their early tracks and gigs, it sets its stall out as a heavier, darker and more exhilarating step on from what's come before. "Nerve Endings," opening track and first taste of the record, encapsulates that in throbbing bass and George hollering "can't find my end" whilst "Fester-Blister" provides an anthemic streak cutting through a wall of frenetic noise. "Tough Luck" takes inspiration from outside the punk pool associated with Eagulls, boasting a rumbling Joy Division-esque bassline. It all ends on the searing rush of "Soulless Youth," which finds George declaring "I never feel fine/They're soulless inside... the soulless youth," with enough bile to make it clear just how he feels about his generation.
"We're all more pessimistic, more jaded, more cynical," explains Goldy of the band's moodier shift. "When you finish uni, you've got optimism and you think everything's going to be alright. You think you'll just take a shit job in a shop and you'll only have to do it for a while but then you're still there a year later..."
It's this frustration and sardonicism that fuels Eagulls and lights a match under their first LP. Though they admit to there being "lighter moments" on the record, on the whole it's a gloomy, overcast affair. Influenced by post-punk and shoegaze (primarily the sonic assaults of My Bloody Valentine) combined with their own background in hardcore bands, it follows their first trip to America earlier this year for SXSW (a trip the band sacked in their jobs to take) - the catalyst for their signing to US indie label Partisan.
With the record now complete and ready for release, expect their own unique brand of mayhem to be lighting up venues around the country as they return to their natural environment of the road to reinforce their abrasive brilliant reputation once more.

The Notwist's 'Close To The Glass' out tomorrow

Magnet Magazine’s Guest Editor Feb. 24-Mar. 2 The Notwist’s Close To The Glass, featuring the singles “Kong” and the title cut, will be out tomorrow, Tuesday February 25th in North America on CD / LP / DL via Sub Pop.NPR Music says of the album, “If the new Close to the Glass is any indication, The Notwist sounds fully refreshed: From its corker of a single ("Kong") on, the album showcases a light touch in a frequently collage-based sound that brims over with buzzing, springy, playful urgency. Throughout Close to the Glass, The Notwist lets many sides of its sound peek out, as straightforward pop-rock melts together with the pulse of Krautrock until they become indistinguishable. But, like its most recent predecessors, the album never feels chilly, even when the band wanders through a nine-minute instrumental ("Lineri") late in the proceedings. Even then, no matter how many machines manipulate The Notwist's sound, they never drown out the human heartbeats at its center (see “First Listen” February 17th).In related news, The Nowtist’s Markus Acher takes over as editor of Magnet Magazine all this week (see “Guest Editor” February 24-March 2nd). At radio, Close To The Glass was the no. 1 most added at album with CMJ radio reporters, which led to the cover of this week’s CMJ New Music Report (see "New Music Report" March 3rd issue). The Notwist recently premiered the official video for “Kong,” the lead single from Close To The Glass, an animated visual directed by Yu Sato and featuring illustrations from Tim Divall. The video for “Kong” is based on a true story that involved Marcus Acher and his family being trapped in their home during an Ammer River flood in Weilheim, Germany. During the experience, the young Acher resorted to fantasy, secretly hoping a superhero would save his family as the waters rose around them. Watch the video here. The Notwist’s previously announced 2014 tour is underway now, beginning tonight February 24th in Wiesbaden, DE at Schlachthof, with a series of tour dates that currently end July 19th in Gräfenhainichen, DE at the Melt! Festival. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.
What People Are Saying About The Notwist:
“Close to the Glass is a record bookended with perfectly executed experiments, so gentle on the ears. Beautiful and perfect, they make the whole record seem round, and right.” [8.5/10] - The Line Of Best Fit
“Judging by "Close to the Glass," …they have toughened up their sound considerably since 2008's The Devil, You + Me, diving into the rubbery abstraction that's afforded by modular synthesis and adopting the percussive, post-rave sensibilities of Mouse on Mars and Simian Mobile Disco.” [50 Albums You Gotta Hear in 2014] - SPIN
“It's sensitively poised and technically perfect.” [8/10] - Uncut
“Here, they've abandoned any evidence of their glitchy history, mostly eschewing electronics in favour of warm, organic instrumentation like acoustic guitars and real-life drums. With a gentle melody and frontman Markus Acher's inimitable vocals, however, it's still the Notwist we know and love.” [Kong”] - Exclaim
“Their eighth LP brilliantly snaps together everything.”[8/10] - Q Magazine
“Every element of Close to the Glass feels like it has been minutely polished; like the workings of a miniature pocket watch, it all feels succinct, gleaming and fresh.” [8/10] - The 405
“A very pretty, very hooky piece of Krautrock tunecraft, shot through with a deep sense of longing.” [“Kong”] - Stereogum
“Close To The Glass is a forum in which ramshackle indie-pop, acoustic balladry, and expansive electronic sonic explorations happily coexists, and it's all the better for it.” - Under The Radar
“Propulsive, driving...a surprisingly sparkling uptempo cut” [“Kong”] - Pitchfork
“Marked with fuzzy synths, a driving bassline, and abounding vocal hooks, “Kong” even has a trippy outro, adding an extra layer of interesting.” [“Kong”] - Consequence of Sound
“An excellent piece of krauty, rhythmic guitar pop in which melancholy lyrics about unceasing rain get juxtaposed with bubbly instrumentals. Our favorite moment, though, would have to be when the whole thing devolves into a film-noir groove and the strings and acoustic riffs kick in.” [“Kong”] - Pretty Much Amazing
