Listen to "Born Without a Heart" on FILTER
It's no wonder why The Zombies asked Mystic Braves to open their L.A. show last year. While the hometown favorites were barely even a blip on their respective parents' radars when Odessey and Oracle was released, the psych-steeped five-piece sounds like they stepped straight out of the '60s. And not in an obvious, someone's-been-studying-their Nuggets-comps-until-the-grooves-give-out sort of way, either. We're talking a richer, fuller plot of references (garage-borne greats like The Electric Prunes, The Chocolate Watchband and The Music Machine) that filter the band's hook-centric purple haze through robust organ rolls, runaway guitar riffs, heat-stroked horns and a rhythm section that can only be described as "restless".
Especially on Desert Island, a scrappy extension of the self-titled debut Mystic Braves dropped in 2013. From the ravenous opening remarks of "Bright Blue Day Haze"—the first song frontman Julian Ducatenzeiler wrote for the outfit, making it their mission statement in more ways than one—right on through the wild-eyed melodies of "Earthshake," the filler-free effort is more aggressive than their last album yet about as immediately accessible as vapor-trailed rock music gets these days. It's sunshine in a bottle, really, which can only be expected from a group with such deep California roots."The west coast has it all really—beaches, mountains, deserts, cities, suburbs," explains Ducatenzeiler, who's rounded out by drummer Cameron Gartung, guitarist Shane Stotsenberg, bassist Tony Malacara and organist/tambourinist Ignacio Gonzalez. "Our sound is merely a byproduct of the environments we grew up in and the experiences we had. We're not trying to deliberately channel '60s music, either; we simply write sensible pop songs from the heart with psychedelic textures and tones. It just comes natural to us."

fierce panda records to release 20th Anniversary Compilation

Their intentions were clear: to release the ‘Shagging In The Streets’ EP, the double-vinyl six-track tribute to the magnesium flare which was The New Wave Of New Wave, and then call it a day – you don’t call yourself something as trite as fierce panda if you intend to make it to Christmas. That day was February 24th would ever be the same again. Time, as tends to be the case, has moved on: The Blue Posts is now a Boots chemist and The New Wave Of New Wave is now a footnote in the NME scene-inventing filing cabinet. Unbelievably however fierce panda has survived against several odds, flourishing throughout the end of the previous century with a cavalcade of cheery one-off singles and cripplingly cheekily-titled compilation EPs like ‘Mortal Wombat’ and ‘Otter Than July’. And ‘Songs About Plucking’. And ‘Screecher Comforts’. Indeed, in 2004 fierce panda records released ‘decade: ten years of fierce panda’, a compilation album which hauled together a savvy selection of those pivotal singles and early nuggets from the likes of Placebo, Ash, The Bluetones, Idlewild, Coldplay, Keane, Death Cab For Cutie and – but of course – Winnebago Deal.
Time, as still tends to be the case, has moved on again: having retired from the world of one-off singles in 2006 fierce panda has been attempting to make some kind of sense in a music industry gone mad. There is fierce panda songs for publishing, there is fierce panda management for managing, there is even fierce panda books for, umm, booking. And there have been fierce panda albums. Lots and lots of lovely great big grown up albums.
Which bring us rather too neatly to ‘endangered: fierce panda 2004–2014’, a compilation album which starts with ‘The Saddest Music In The World’ by Woodpigeon and ends with one of the saddest songs in the world in ‘Sovereign’ by Ultrasound. In between is a gentle, genteel and occasionally very grumpy emotional rollercoaster ride through the past ten years of slow-moving independent chaos. The artwork is cribbed from ‘The Hurting’ by Tears For Fears. The vibe is taken from a deserted old man’s pub in the middle of a long, lost afternoon. All 18 songs are culled from the multitude of fierce panda albums and mini-albums released since 2004.
Perversely, for a record which pertains to be a ‘Best Of…’ collection, several of the tracks on ‘endangered:’ were never released as singles because they were too long, too languid or just too damn lovely. Even more perversely, some of these languid, lovely, too-long tracks WERE actually released as singles. Want we do know is that, far from those early snotty New Wave Of New Wave-raving days in The Blue Posts, two of these bands have recently been playlisted on the comfy airwaves of Radio 2, and another six of them should have been.
Terrible sacrifices have been made: because all the tracks are off albums we’ve had to leave behind classic fierce panda one-off singles from Battle, The Maccabees, Boy Kill Boy and Dead Disco. Because all of the ‘endangered:’ tracks are endeavouring to capture a sense of slow-moving sadness we have had leave out the heavy heavy monster sounds of Hawk Eyes, The Blackout and The Computers. And how ‘How Come You Don’t Hold Me No More’ by Welsh Wonders The Hot Puppies – who put the ABBA into Aberystwyth – isn’t on here only the traumatized compiler knows. ‘endangered: fierce panda 2004 – 2014’ then: from ‘Shagging In The Streets’ to sobbing under the sheets. It’s been one heck of a journey… fierce panda

We Were Promised Jetpacks E Rey Live In Philadelphia
We Were Promised Jetpacks E Rey Live In Philadelphia Streaming At NoiseyLive Album Out February 25 on FatCat Winter Tour To SXSW Kicks Off Tonight At The El Rey In Los Angeles
"Clear, plaintive vocals propelled by ascending-staccato guitars and hellbent dance-worthy rhythms, as if the Texas band Explosions in the Sky had shown up with New Order's singer and backfield." - Rolling Stone
Listen: E Rey Live In Philadelphia via Noisey Watch: E Rey - Live In Philadelphia Album Trailer via SPIN or YouTube
Noisey has premiered a stream of We Were Promised Jetpacks new album E Rey - Live in Philadelphia which was recorded at Philadelphia's Union Transfer. The live album will be released on February 25 via FatCat and follows up We Were Promised Jetpacks critically acclaimed sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach. The album features a new track "Peace Sign" which is an early live-version taster of their upcoming studio album, which will be released in the fall. Last month, SPIN premiered the album trailer for E Rey Live In Philadelphia and it's also available to share on YouTube. E Rey Live In Philadelphia is available for pre-order now in the FatCat online store.
We Were Promised Jetpacks could write the book on how to be a rock band. They work tirelessly. They are friendly, humble people. They are passionate about what they do, truly in it for the music and nothing else. They write great songs... and they put on a killer live show.
Some bands spend forever making their album sound perfect, and then fall flat when it comes time to performing live. Not WWPJ. All the explosive energy and drama of their studio albums not only comes across in concert, but is greatly intensified. A Jetpacks concert is transformative experience, a rite of passage, an exuberant unity with those around you.
Now, to kick off a year that will bring a long-awaited new studio album in the fall and multiple US tours including a stop at SXSW, FatCat are proud to present the next best thing to seeing the band in concert; E Rey Live In Philadelphia is a live album with an accompanying film that properly captures the spirit, the community, the power, the pure heft of a WWPJ live show.
Recorded at the final show of their 2012 US tour, at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, and mixed by the band's touring sound engineer Andrew Bush. The film, downloadable separately, includes the full concert shot by a 5-camera crew, as well as tour footage and interviews shot on Super 8 by their friend Matt over weeks of being on the road with the band.
For the uninitiated, this set acts as a great introduction to a superb live band whose two albums have sold over 60k in the US. For fans, this is a new piece of the Jetpacks' puzzle, a reminder of where Jetpacks truly live: on the stage, under the lights and singing along with everyone in the audience.
We Were Promised Jetpacks have also announced North American winter tour. The upcoming tour will make stops in major cities including New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C. and will include performances at Austin's SXSW Music Festival. All shows are listed below.

Maya Vik "Totally Right"
Maya Vik Premieres "Totally Right" On Okay PlayerPlays Brooklyn Night Bazaar With Dâm Funk On March 7thPlays Oslo-Night SXSW Showcase

Media:
Press Quotes:"Summoning the 1980s Minneapolis funk of Prince and Janet Jackson." - The New York Times "The big-haired bass player from across the lake has a funky, electro-pop sound" - Vibe"Catchy, funk-sizzled electro-pop, great hair, and [a] penchant for working a bass like a Robert Palmer girl." - Noisey
Valentine’s Day is this week and it also happens to be Maya Vik’s birthday. To celebrate, she has a present for you from her upcoming yet untitled album. Produced by Pat Lukens, “Totally Right” is a feel good love song that digs deep into the candy jar of late 80s Jam & Lewis era R&B and emerges with enough sunshine to power a small city. So bust out of your winter funk, check your temperature for spring fever, and enjoy this new song because Maya Vik is here and everything is going to be totally right.
‘Music to make babies to’ is just one way to describe the sound of Norwegian bass player and solo artist Maya Vik. Although the press have drawn comparisons to Prince, Janet, Sheila E, and Vanity 6, Maya lays down a fresh brand of sexy electronic funk pop with her steamy vocals and thumping bass lines. Years of hard work has paid off for Maya which includes winning a Norwegian “Grammy” with her previous band Montée, playing in Savoy with a-Ha’s Paul Waaktaar, opening for Lenny Kravitz, and touring the US, Japan, Russia, Holland, and Germany with her own trio. After independently releasing more than two albums worth of critically acclaimed material in two short years, Maya Vik currently is sitting on a trove of new jams set for release throughout 2014.Photo Credit: Paal Laukli

"Ghost Beach are the Venn diagram of their influences—Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, The Police, and Daft Punk—and then some, thanks to a shitload of synths, some nostalgic 80s sonics and even the occasional reggae groove. The sound is unmistakably their own.” – VICE’s Noisey
“If you can get people dancing as early as noon. You're good. They did." – NPR’s All Songs Considered
“…a radiant and catchy cut fit for a tropical island dance party.” – Consequence of Sound

Matt Pond PA is excited to announce the Emblems 10 Year Anniversary Tour, kicking off on May 1st at Grog Shop in Cleveland, OH. This special tour will commemorate the anniversary of one of the most regarded albums in Matt Pond PA's ever growing catalog, which earned critical praise and solidified him as an artist to watch.
Paste Magazine succinctly called Emblems, "a lush, haunting collection of superbly crafted chamber pop."
"We've never played all the songs on Emblems in front of a live human audience, so this is definitely exciting. I wrote the album when I first started drifting between New York and Philly. Since I haven't stopped drifting, it feels as relevant as it did ten years ago" said Pond. Additionally - Matt Pond has launched a Pre-order via Pledge Music for the forthcoming album, 'The State of Gold', in which fans will be offered a glimpse into the recording process, early mixes, and various exclusives such as the Guild Guitar used throughout the recording process. That campaign can be seen here: www.pledgemusic.com/projects/mattpond
