Mac DeMarco shares new single, announces 7" subscription series +

MAC DEMARCO SHARES NEW SINGLE VIA THE ATLANTIC
ANNOUNCES TOUR DATES & 7" SUBSCRIPTION SERIES
SALAD DAYS DUE APRIL 1 VIA CAPTURED TRACKS After recently announcing his new album Salad Days, Mac DeMarco is back today to share the album's second single. Whereas Salad Days as a whole is a more serious, contemplative affair than his previous releases, "Brother" finds Mac more sincere than we've seen him to date. It's an earworm that you'll be hard-pressed to get out of your head any time soon. In addition to the new track, Mac has also announced a new 7" subscription series, available exclusively through Captured Tracks, called "The Wonderful World of Mac DeMarco, Vol. 1". The series will offer subscribers a 7" of previously unreleased Mac DeMarco every 6-8 weeks, in addition to other Mac-related goodies. More info on the program available at the Captured Tracks site. Check out "Brother" along with all of Mac's upcoming live dates below. STREAM: "Brother" - https://soundcloud.com/capturedtracks/brother "As I'm getting older, chip up on my shoulder..." is the opening line from Mac DeMarco's second full-length LP Salad Days, the follow up to 2012's lauded Mac DeMarco 2. Amongst that familiar croon and lilting guitar, that initial line from the title track sets the tone for an LP of a maturing singer/songwriter/producer. Someone strangely self-aware of the positives and negatives of their current situation at the ripe old age of 23.
Written and recorded around a relentless touring schedule, Salad Days gives the listener a very personal insight into what it's all about to be Mac amidst the craziness of a rising career in a very public format. The lead single, "Passing Out Pieces," set to huge overdriven organ chords, contains lines like "...never been reluctant to share, passing out pieces of me..." Clearly, this isn't the same record that breezily gave us "Dreamin" and "Ode to Viceroy," but the result of what comes from their success. "Chamber of Reflection," a track featuring icy synth stabs and soulful crooning, wouldn't be out of place on a fantasy Shuggie Otis and Prince collaboration. Standout tracks like these show Mac's widening sound, whether insights into future directions or even just welcome one-off forays into new territory.

Still, this is musically, lyrically and melodically good old Mac DeMarco, through and through. The crisp John Lennon/Phil Spector era homegrown lush production that could have come off Geoff Emerick's mixing board in 1972 with that peculiar Mac touch that's completely right now is still present. "Brother," a complete future classic, is Mac at his most soulful and easygoing but with that distinct weirdness and bite that can only come from Mr. DeMarco. "Treat Her Better" is rife with Mac-isms, heavily chorused slinky lead guitar, swooning vocal melodies, effortless chords that come along only after years of effort, and the other elements seriously lacking in independent music: sentiment and heartfelt sincerity.

We're only in Part 2 1/2 (one EP and two LP's in) of Mac's career. As you read this and as you hear the album on April Fool's Day of this year, he'll probably be on tour, or preparing for one... or maybe already writing new music. A relentless work ethic is something to be admired in today's indie music scene, but when it's of the quality Mac is giving us time and time again, it starts to turn from admiration to awe.

Dum Dum Girls "Are You Okay" Short Film + Updated Tour Dates

Watch Dum Dum Girls “Are You Okay”:
A Short Film Written By Bret Easton Ellis
Presented By Sub Pop, Vice & MOCA TV

http://noisey.vice.com/music-video-premieres/dum-dum-girls-are-you-okay

Updated Spring & Summer Live Schedule
Includes UK Tour Dates May 1st-14th

Sub Pop, Vice & MOCA TV proudly present Dum Dum Girls in "Are You Okay", a short film written by Bret Easton Ellis and featuring the single “Are You Okay?” from the band’s acclaimed new album, Too True. The psychological thriller which stars Dee Dee Penny and Shiloh Fernandez, was directed by Brewer (Alt J, Purity Ring, Passion Pit), produced by Braxton Pope, with additional musical score composed by Tamaryn and Drew McDowall. The video also features Charles Ray’s artwork (Two Boys, 2010 fiberglass) courtesy of the artist and Matthew Marks Gallery (see video premiere March 6th). You can also watch a making of the video here.

Dum Dum Girls’ have added a string of UK tour dates (May 1st-14th) to it’s existing spring & summer schedule in support of Too True. Additionally, the band has scheduled multiple appearances at SXSW all next week.  Please find a current list of tour dates below.

In related news, Dum Dum Girls’ Too True has now spent four weeks atop the CMJ Top 200 albums chart. This is the band’s 4th release to top the chart.

Too True was produced by Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s, Richard Hell), Sune Rose Wagner (The Raveonettes) and engineered by Alonzo Vargas at East West Studios in Los Angeles and The Coven in New York City.

What People Are Saying About Dum Dum Girls Too True:
Dum Dum Girls continue to explore a sonic and formal intersection of the early 1960s — girl groups, surf-rock, garage-rock — and the post-punk 1980s of the Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. A few chords, a clear melody and succinct verse-chorus-bridge structures are filled with darkly allusive lyrics and floated amid gauzy, sweeping guitar effects. It’s a roomy concept, encompassing spaghetti western guitar touches in “Cult of Love,” new wave momentum in “Little Minx,” stately folk-rock in “Under These Hands,” a weighty undertow in “Lost Boys and Girls Club” and a celestial serenity in “Trouble Is My Name.” - [Critics Choice]   New York Times

“Penny's songs are no less quotable for their simplicity, whether she's name-checking 19th-century poet Arthur Rimbaud ("Rimbaud Eyes"), fitting the album's title into the chorus of "Too True to Be Good" or dispensing a perfect goth-pop mission statement in "Evil Blooms": "Why be good? Be beautiful and sad." On Too True, Penny and Dum Dum Girls need barely 30 minutes to prove that a band can be all three at once.” [First Listen] -  NPR Music

“.. This album is the perfect-pop balance of cliché and rawness, with mythic ambition and songs that make you a three-minute hero.” [4 / 5 Stars] -  MOJO

“Sleek and sophisticated, this third full-length careens from muscular blasts of ’80s guitar rock (“In the Wake of You”) to spectral ballads (“Are You Okay?”). Penny writes hits even if they never become that. Songs like “Too True to Be Good” and “Rimbaud Eyes” are meant to be blared from car radios with the windows down; they’re perfect. -  Boston Globe

“Songs like "Rimbaud Eyes" and "Evil Blooms" more than live up to their fashion-goth titles. But Penny is best opening up her sound on big, searching ballads like "Lost Boys and Girls Club," where sad Madonna hangs with the Jesus and Mary Chain, or the Chrissie Hynde-worthy weeper "Are You Okay?" where Penny wanders in a "lavender haze" ("I'm reckless at night/I'm sorry for days"), wearing boozy misery like a black-leather security blanket.” [3.5/5 Stars] -  Rolling Stone

Too True is a bold album, with Dee Dee backed by huge swelling guitars on a series of resoundingly anthemic and unashamedly 80s sounding tracks.” [8 / 10] -  Uncut

The Shoe (Jena Malone, Hunger Games) Announces New Album

The Shoe Announces New Album
I’m Okay

Featuring Jena Malone
(Hunger Games, Donnie Darko)

(Community Music; June 3, 2014)

 “Paper Cup” Premieres on NYLON;
Grab the FREE MP3 Here
(please post and share!)

“We’ve been fans since the beginning, just saying.” – NYLON

“Hey, we can dig that.” - Pitchfork

Jena Malone and Lem Jay Ignacio, aka The Shoe, first met at a Christmas carol party at the Mandrake in Los Angeles, California in 2008. They ended up playing that night and meeting for the first time on stage. They performed “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” but with Jena singing completely in scat-style gibberish and Lem Jay musically not missing a beat. A unique musical friendship and language was born.

Jena had built an instrument she called “The Shoe” which was simply an old steamer trunk she dollied around with a plethora of electronic instruments inside. She brought it over to Lem Jay's garage to jam soon after they met. Lem Jay, who is a pianist and music producer said “From that night, it seemed like she was always over and we were always free-styling, making up songs, playing abstract piano duets, psychotherapy rants and love spells. We'd stay up all night recording all our jams, sometimes we'd improvise complete songs from start to finish. I think we literally have over a hundred hours of nights like this. Since we did this so much, it was hard to know what it was, whether it was a band or an art project or just two friends constantly making music.” The band’s first EP, At Lem Jay's Garage, came out in 2009 under Jena’s label, There Was An Old Woman Records.

The Shoe’s sophomore effort,  I’m Okay also recorded in Lem Jay’s garage, beautifully captures the essence of today’s pop music. Malone, her voice sailing tenderly amongst Ignacio’s poignant arrangements, recites witty lyrics, resembling those of the grand songstresses Joni Mitchell or Rickie Lee Jones. The instrumentation, a Wurlitzer piano, an electric guitar, a bass and percussion, interweaves in the most handsome, yet minimalistic ways, borrowing elements from the fuzzy surf pop of the Beach Boys, the dreamy shoe gaze of Mazzy Star and the catchy melodies of Sara Bareilles’ classic pop songs.

Of this newest effort Jena says “This new record means so much more to me because I actually wanted to write songs. I wanted to craft them more than I had ever done. I love the art of freestyle, for me I always start there as a songwriter, but this record was different. I wanted to tell stories everyone could feel and understand, not just me.“

Jena Malone has been acting for over 19 years in independent and blockbuster films. Most recently seen in  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire  and soon to be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's film  Inherent Vice . She has been making music for eight years and has self-released two albums as Jena Malone and her Bloodstains.

Lem Jay has made music with many different artists, including Zooey Deschanel andCharlyne Yi. He has composed music for brands such as Pokémon and Converse and for art projects at MOCALACMA, and The Hammer Museum.

Check out Jena on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon talking about The Shoe.

"...visceral and primal: a bare-knuckled bloodletting of rhythms and riffs and grimy vocals that was punishing, arousing and cathartic and bereft of nuance or gloss." Kansas City Star
