Jessica Hernandez: NPR, Acclaimed Debut & More

NPR'S WEEKEND EDITION  SPOTLIGHTSJESSICA HERNANDEZ & THE DELTAS
DEBUT ALBUM SECRET EVIL OUT NOW+ ITUNES TOP 20
CURRENTLY ON NORTH AMERICAN HEADLINING TOUR +UPCOMING ST. PAUL & THE BROKEN BONES FALL TOUR
"The new album by Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas has it all. Secret Evil offers a softly strummed rootsy ballad one minute, the oom-pah of Balkan-inspired brass the next, or twangy rockabilly guitars followed by the punch of New Orleans-tinged horns. But in song after song, one thing is consistent: a powerful, undeniable voice."- NPR Weekend Edition  Secret Evil, the powerful debut album from Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, is now available via Instant Records. Listen to the record, currently on the iTunes Top 20, and hear why this exciting new group is catching the attention of both critics and concertgoers here:  https://soundcloud.com/jessicahernandezdeltas
NPR's Weekend Edition caught up with Hernandez to talk about her ancestry, Detroit and waiting 2+ years to release these songs. Listen here:http://www.npr.org/2014/08/23/342480646/jessica-hernandez-singing-to-the-rafters-no-matter-the-style
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas are currently on the road with a wide-ranging live schedule that includes headline dates, festivals such as Bumbershoot and Riot Fest, and a 4-week tour with St. Paul & The Broken Bones beginning October 14. A full list of tour dates below.
"Her voice instantly captivates, radiating both power and sophistication on 11 tracks that vary wildly in tone ... Songs like "Tired Oak" absolutely soar with a mix of pulsing percussion, keys and of course the triumphant vocals of Hernandez ... It's these tracks that have tagged Hernandez as an ascendant star, because songs such as "Dead Brains," "No Place Left to Hide" and "Downtown Man" would be stand-out lead singles on just about any pop album, and likely smash hits for the likes of Katy Perry or Adele, in whose company the Detroit musician would not be misplaced, in terms of vocal ability." - Paste Magazine (8.8 review)
"The Detroit-based singer has a powerhouse voice that really took me by surprise (in a great way). And while her pipes are enough to reel me in, they're backed by a powerful five-piece band, The Deltas, that incorporates rockabilly, soul, Latin and punk sounds into their spellbinding tunes ... I love just about every song on [Secret Evil], and I have a feeling these guys are especially electric during their live performances." - USA Today
"Hernandez has a powerful, riveting voice and she's a versatile writer."- The Wall Street Journal
"Queasy carnival music, hoodoo blues stomps, country waltz ballads, primitive rock and jazzy inflections coalesce and flow around the anchor of Hernandez's rich voice, a contralto rife with character and heartrending soul. The amalgam of styles in this alternate history is esoteric enough to be fresh and enticing to a music snob, but contains enough pop sensibilities to lure in, and open more doors for, the casual listener ... one of 2014's most deftly sequenced, produced, written and performed albums." - PopMatters (9 out of 10 stars)
Stay tuned for more news!

LA Font Premiere Video for "Onshore"

LA Font Premiere Video for "Onshore"  via Brooklyn VeganEast Coast Tour Begins This Weekend "We love LA Font. If you don't know them, you should reconsider a few things about your life, like whether or not you're cool...They sort of sound like they're from the 90s. But you know what else? They sound f**ing good." - Noisey  "Garage rock with a pop influence, LA Font fills the niche for those who like indie tunes reminiscent of the mid-'90s." -  Los Angeles Times

"Already comparisons are being drawn between modern peers like Speedy Ortiz and '90s influences like Built to Spill and Pavement. It's a compliment to the band's tight drum-bass combo and witty lyrics, yet a disservice to a group that's clearly growing into its own sound." - Filter

Watch: "Onshore" via Brooklyn Vegan or YoutubeListen: "Motor Rally" via PureVolume or SoundCloud

LA Font, Los Angeles's favorite distorted-guitar-singalong-with-the-windows-down band, are back with a new video for "Onshore" which premiered at Brooklyn Vegan. Set in LA's Echo Park Lake, the video takes an apocalyptical/ literal approach to the phrase "loose lips sink ships." It was directed by Hank Friedmann who has also directed videos for Stars and Other Lives. This weekend, the band is beginning a string of East Coast tour dates that will take them to Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Earlier this summer, Pure Volume  premiered the B-side to the 7" "Motor Rally" and the track is also available to stream and share via SoundCloud. The "Teen Bazooka" 7" is available now at the Kill/Hurt Online Store. The A-side of the new 7" is "Teen Bazooka." It's a 1994-esque hurricane of distorted guitars, a big nonsensical chorus that recalls the PixiesNirvana and Guided By Voices, and a tongue-in-cheek rebuke of all that nostalgia in the refrain, "Who cares about memories? They're worth about nothing." What is a teen bazooka, anyway? "Teen bazooka is the weapon of choice for dispassionate annihilation - like saying, 'the Grand Canyon sucks' or 'who cares about memories,'" LA Font frontman Danny Bobbe explains. "It's not a life ethos, but it's a handy tool to have in your arsenal."
"Motor Rally" is a punky two-chord assault that recalls Parquet Courts with its rapid-fire punchlines poking fun at pointless machismo. "I'm Judge Dredd and I am the law / I own every spot in the parking lot," singer Danny Bobbe says. Bobbe explains: "Motor Rally's a two minute rock song about what it takes to become a motor cross champion. For one thing, your mom can't be a chaperone at the prom."
The Echo Park-based quartet LA Font is made up of Danny Bobbe (vocals/guitar), Jon Perry (guitar), Greg Katz (bass) and Harlow Rodriguez (drums). The band formed after Jon woke Danny up in the middle of the night by playing synthesizers loudly next door.
LA Font has played SXSW twice, toured the western U.S. in 2013, and will tour the east coast in August 2014. LA Font is also the house band for the alternative comedy show "Entitlement" at Club Los Globos in L.A., a show run by Vice Magazine writers, where the band have played alongside Reggie WattsMarc MaronKyle Kinane, Maria Bamford and many others.
LA Font songs have been used on Showtime's "House of Lies," in a national film ad campaign, several MTV shows, in Steven Segall's "True Justice" series, and in a forthcoming feature film starring Taylor Lautner, among other shows, movies and ads. Additionally, LA Font songs have been heard on every alternative radio station in Los Angeles including KROQ, KCRW, ALT 98.7, KXLU, KCSN, and non-commercial and alternative stations worldwide, including in rotation on Flux 100.6 FM Berlin.
LA Font has made four recordings: The American Leagues (2010, self-released), Sharks (2011, Sister City Records), Diving Man (2013, New Professor Music) and "Teen Bazooka" b/w "Motor Rally" (2014, Kill/Hurt Records). "Diving Man" was named the No. 2 song from L.A. in 2013 by Buzzbands.LA.
Upcoming LA Font Shows: 8/22 - Boston - Great Scott8/24 - NYC - Baby's All Right w/ SWIMMING8/25 - NYC - Cake Shop w/ KNTRLR, Ravens & Chimes, Water8/26 - Philadelphia - Girard Hall w/ Chelsea Kills + Mumblr 8/27 - Baltimore - Holy Frijoles w/ Silence Kid 8/28 - Boston - WZBC radio session

Watch Shabazz Palaces' "#CAKE" video

Watch: Shabazz Palaces “#CAKE”
A resplendent new visual from Lese Majesty

http://youtu.be/DDRPf8KHawY

Premiere via Pitchfork
AFROPUNK Festival August 23rd
KEXP session video
CMJ: #1 Hip Hop & #8 Top 200 Albums chart
s

Feast your eyes on the official video for Shabazz Palaces’ “#CAKE,” a standout from the acclaimed Lese Majesty, featuring guest vocals from Catherine Harris-White of THEESatisfaction. The new visual was directed by Hiro Murai (Earl Sweatshirt, St. Vincent, The Shins). Pitchfork says of the video: "combines post-apocalyptic horror with surreal psychedelia, rendering the members of the Seattle rap crew as the various faces of a polygonal being which resides over a ruined building (see news story August 22nd)."

At radio this week, Lese Majesty is seeing a great response from CMJ reporters, spending two weeks at #1 on the hip hop chart and #8 on the top 200 albums chart.  In related news,  you can now watch Shabazz Palaces KEXP performances featuring Lese Majesty highlights “They Come In Gold,” “Forerunner Foray,” “Ishmael” and “Motion Sickness” (see August 21st session).

Shabazz Palaces’ North American & European in support of Lese Majesty is currently underway, including two shows this weekend: Friday, August 22nd in Philadelphia, PA at Union Transfer and Saturday, August 23rd at AFROPUNK. Please find a complete list of tour dates below.

Lese Majesty is available for purchase on CD / 2xLP / CD from Sub Pop MegamartiTunes, and Amazonnow.  The double vinyl version is housed in a "shark skin" embossed jacket and includes a fold-out poster, and an etching on side D.

What people are saying about Lese Majesty:
“These aren’t condescending “Real Hip-Hop” platitudes: this is a call to arms for hip-hop’s creative fringe to snatch the reins from a power structure more interested in self-preservation than the advancement of the culture. The soul of Shabazz Palaces is pairing next-gen sounds with classic brass-tacks show-and-prove emceeing, and Lese Majesty tugs those extremes as far as they've ever been pulled; that it never shows signs of wear speaks to the strength of the bond.” [Review, 8.2/ 10] - Pitchfork

“The music is alternately languid and jarring, with melodies mutating or disappearing and Mr. Butler’s cryptic sci-fi raps often receding into the fabric.” [Sunday Arts Feature] -  NY Times

“Shabazz Palaces let a little fresh air and whimsy slip into their dense melange of whispered rhymes and slack-jawed space beats.” [Review, B+] -   Entertainment Weekly

"Lese Majesty feels more now, than then. In mirroring and transcending the schizoid, rootless form of digital society, it's an attempt to help people cope with the culture. Like floating from level to placid level in Monument, listening to this record prompts your imagination and encourages discourse and reflection. Not the academic kind, but the kind of communal discovery people have been doing for ages." [Review, 9/10] -  SPIN

“His dazzling feel for 21st-century psychedelia pushes this well past nostalgia tripping--and while the verbal abstraction gets thick, there's serious pleasure in plumbing it.” [Review, 3.5 / 5] -  Rolling Stone

“Raw, graceful tunes… As melodic as much of Lese Majesty is, the words might be the album's most important element. Close listeners will find brilliant inventions and plenty of quotable passages.” [First Listen] -  NPR Music

“Shabazz Palaces have made the best album of the year...not so much a mysterious transmission from some unknown point in deep space, but more like echoes from the future ghost of our planet. Earth used to be here, where the music is, but now it's gone. Planets can become extinct, but raps can live on, disembodied and numinous.” [Review]  -  The Stranger

“After countless hours spent driving around bumping the new record, we’d agree with those that heard it for the first time dodging lasers that Lese Majesty is the future of hip-hop, if we thought that anyone else was capable of doing something this revelatory." -  Gorilla Vs. Bear

“The group's 2011 breakthrough, Black Up, thrilled and flummoxed critics with elements of Phillip Glass minimalism, Brian Eno ambience, and George Clinton cosmic weirdness. On the new follow-up, Lese Majesty, the sonic bushwhacking appears destined to continue.” -  All Things Considered

Limited Edition 7" Vinyl Available Now Here
"It's all so pretty I'm afraid saying anything else might diminish it."  The FADER  (Credit: Chris LaPutt)On the heels of their critically acclaimed performance at New York City's MoMA, Los Angeles based dreamy trio Tashaki Miyaki are pleased to announce their upcoming national tour supporting Allah-Las. Tashaki Miyaki was born out of a late night jam between Lucy and Rocky in early 2011. Shortly after they started making recordings as a duo with friend and producer/engineer Joel Jerome (Dios, Babies on Acid). Run The Jewels (Killer Mike & El-P) announce new album

RUN THE JEWELS ANNOUNCE SOPHOMORE ALBUM RTJ2 SHARE "BLOCKBUSTER NIGHT NIGHT PART 1"
RTJ2 DROPPING ON OCTOBER 28TH VIA MASS APPEAL RECORDS
Credit: Durty HarryLISTEN: "Blockbuster Night Part 1" -https://soundcloud.com/massappealrecs/rtj-blockbuster-night-part-1/
"Run The Jewels, the super dynamic duo of El-P and Killer Mike, two of the most distinctive and celebrated names in rap, have announced their sophomore album  RTJ2  is set to drop on October 28th. Newly signed to Mass Appeal Records, the album will be released in a variety of formats, including free downloadCDLP, and digital." The immensely anticipated album includes guests ranging from Zach de la Rocha to Travis Barker among others TBA, but the duo maintain the album is first and foremost about the creative partnership between the MCs themselves. "We are very excited to bring you the next chapter of Run The Jewels via the good folks at Mass Appeal" states El-P. "We can make no promises about the safety of any animals involved in the creation of this record." Killer Mike adds, "It is the best rap group album since RTJ1!" In conjunction with the announcement Run The Jewels have shared the full version of "Blockbuster Night", an excerpt of which dominated the internet on its release just a few weeks ago.

While some thought the MCs to be an unlikely pairing on paper, the duo subverted and pulverized all expectations with their critically lauded Run The Jewels collaborative LP last year. Tapping into the creative synergy they'd discovered in 2012 on Mike's R.A.P. Music album (produced by El-P) and El'sCancer 4 Cure album (featuring Mike), Run The Jewels cemented their musical alliance with a set of uncompromisingly raw, often hilarious, system booming hip-hop, garnering a bounty of critical accolades including the likes of Rolling StonePitchforkXXLSPINNew York Times, and many more. Now well known for their massively energetic live sets, they will be touring North America in support of the album all of November.

Now, after being unavailable for the past several years, fans can access M83’s organic beginnings: Aptly titled M83, this album served as the French electropop outfit’s debut release in 2001 on Gooom.  Recorded as a duo by founding members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, the album was described by Pitchfork as “how it feels to live inside a triumphal music box.” The track names can be read in order to describe a boy/girl meeting at a party.  Taken in tow with the sampled movie dialogue throughout, the album serves as a poignant soundtrack for the simplest of scenarios.
