Surfer Blood Announces New Album 'Snowdonia,' Out 2/3 via Joyful Noise

Surfer Blood Announces New Album Snowdonia,
Out February 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings (
pre-order )

Stream " Six Flags in F or G  Surfer Blood has announced their fourth studio album, Snowdonia, due out February 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings. A sonic departure for the band, Snowdonia is Surfer Blood's first release since the tragic loss of guitarist Thomas Fekete to cancer in May 2016.
Snowdonia was written shortly after the band's first long tour without Fekete, as lead singer John Paul Pitts struggled with Fekete’s absence and the weight of getting older. Featuring a talented new lineup that sees Michael McCleary on guitar and Lindsey Mills on bass -- both high school classmates of Pitts and drummer Tyler Schwarz -- Snowdoniamarks the first time since the band's debut album, 2010's Astro Coast, that Pitts has written and mixed a Surfer Blood record alone. Though the album features plenty of Surfer Blood's signature hooks, it also incorporates heavier themes. One of the record’s darkest songs, " Six Flags in F or G ," was written as Pitts grappled with Fekete’s illness and his absence on tour. You can stream the track where it premiered with  Noisey  or via  Soundcloud . Shortly after Fekete was diagnosed with cancer, Pitts’ mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and began undergoing chemotherapy. Her illness inspired him to write “Carrier Pigeon” -- Pitts notes it is the most narrative and autobiographical song he’s ever written, and it embodies his attempts to reconcile the love he has for his parents with not always loving how they choose to see the world.

Other tracks on the record attempt to deal with aging in a more playful way. “Matter of Time” is a straightforward pop song that focuses on the decision of when to get married, something Pitts is now considering at age 30. “Taking Care of Eddy” can be taken literally: it was written about Pitts' girlfriend's great uncle, Eddy, an 84-year-old who suffered stunted development after a car accident as a child. As a result, he thinks and acts like an eight year old, has Parkinson's disease, and can't get around by himself, but maintains a childlike sense of wonder. While taking care of him hasn't been easy, Pitts tried to inject some of Eddy's playfulness into the song.

While Snowdonia grapples with heavier material, Pitts likens some of the more complex songs to Astro Coast track "Anchorage," though the new songs were written specifically with the band's current lineup and new strengths in mind. Wanting to play up McCleary and Mills' vocal skills, he wrote layers of vocals into almost every track and added call-and-response parts between himself and Mills throughout the album.

With enormous attention to detail, the eight tracks on Snowdonia make the album Surfer Blood's most ambitious release yet.
Six Flags in F or G lyrics:Caught up in a pissing contest,
gasping empty air.
I'm losing precious time
so don't keep me in mind.Nourished by my disappointment.
Parasitic grief,
and there's no turning back,
a widow dressed in black.Silence. Golden.Where I used to look for comfort
is cursed hollow cold.
Right back in death's embrace,
a man without a face.I became completely lucid,
said "who are, who are you?"
I felt his icy breath. When I turned around to face him
I was paralyzed.
I couldn't turn around
or open up my eyes. You'll get over it easy, babe.
See you're bouncing right back again.
Right now its overkill,
but in six months it will be fine,
even charming. Yea.If the angels would sing today
you'd explain it away, I'm sure.
And when the nearest dream recedes,
the dream of Reading and of Leeds
all going off at once in your mind. One of these days,
gonna get to the heart.
One of these days,
when the bridge falls apart.
One of these days,
right back at the start.
One of these days,
we'll never be apart again.Burning Six Flags in effigy.
Didn't read the report,
but you know he's such a juggernaut,
and its never not a lot
in the passionless void. What a bitter macaroon.
What a sour eclair.
And this hysteria
has made us all aware of where
all the buoys are submerged. One of these days,
gonna get to the heart.
One of these days,
when the bridge falls apart.
One of these days,
right back at the start.
One of these days,
we'll never ever be apart.

Hanni El Khatib shares new song "Hold Me Back" + details Savage Times Vol. 5

HANNI EL KHATIB PREMIERES NEW SONG "HOLD ME BACK" ON BBC 6 MUSIC
SAVAGE TIMES VOL. 5 DUE DECEMBER 2ND
SAVAGE TIMES VOL. 1, 2, 3, & 4 AVAILABLE NOW VIA INNOVATIVE LEISURE
LISTEN: "Hold Me Back" - https://hannielkhatib.bandcamp.com/track/hold-me-back

"Hanni El Khatib has been on an unreal creative streak lately" - Noisey
"It's like a maturation of Rae Sremmurd's youthful hedonism wrapped in guitar strings and catchy grooves." - Stereogum
"Sounds somewhat like a happy marriage between The Black Keys and Nirvana" - Interview
2016 has been a prolific year for Hanni El Khatib that has seen him release four collections of new work in Savage Times Vol. 1, 2, 3, & 4. Today he is back to share a new song, "Hold Me Back" in a BBC 6 world premiere. El Khatib is also announcing that his next EP, Savage Times Vol. 5, will be available on December 2nd via Innovative Leisure.
Speaking on the inspiration for "Hold Me Back," El Khatib says, "I wanted to make a track that had an old school Motown guitar groove. Something that inherently had some swing and you could dance to. Once I got it to feel right the lyrics just fell into place. I always thought it was cool that there are so many famous songs about Johnny. Coincidentally my engineer and co-producer shares the name. I just thought it'd be fun to carry on the tradition and throw another "Johnny" song into the mix. That's how this one came together."
Listen to "Hold Me Back" above now, and find more on Hanni El Khatib and stream Savage Times Vol. 1, 2, 3, & 4 below.
About Hanni El Khatib:
You could call 2015 a breakthrough year for Hanni El Khatib, but it wasn't just an easy breakthrough all at once. Instead, it was step after unexpected step and chance after random circumstance, part of a zig-zag path that now has El Khatib working on the most unexpected project he's come up with yet-a project that doesn't even have a name or even an ending right now.
His album Moonlight, a Sandinista!-style festival of experimentation that hit in January 2015, was where everything started. A recording studio meet-up led to a GZA verse on "Moonlight," and that led to an El Khatib appearance on one of GZA's songs-the cover of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican"-and he followed that up by contributing the ghostly middle break to rapper Freddie Gibbs' bleaked-out "Satin Black." By summer he'd put out a picture disc single of his desolate take on D'Angelo and Premier's brooding "Devil's Pie" and teamed up with a bunch of elementary school kids from Staten Island's P.S. 22 Chorus for a rework of "Moonlight" and "Melt Me," and yes, it was as adorable as you'd think. He'd finish producing the debut album for Parisian psychedelic trio Wall of Death, and he'd make it all the way to Vladivostok, Russia, for a final set of festival appearances that the local U.S. consulate reported "brought artist and audience closer together." Then he'd play his last show of the year-last show to date, really-in September of 2015. And then everything suddenly changed.            El Khatib was booked to headline a Paris show with a special one-shot supergroup including drummer Alex Sowinski of BadBadNotGood, bassist Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers and Dam-Funk collaborator and solo synthesizer wizard Computer Jay. But the Bataclan attacks canceled those plans, and so El Khatib was left with unexpected space in his schedule. He took the time to hole up with his guitar and generate hundreds of ideas-an uninterrupted flow that left dozens of voice-memo song snippets on his phone-and booked a session at Bell's Jazzcats studio in December to see what would happen. The very first day pretty much immediately resulted in "Gonna Die Alone" and "Baby's OK"-the first two new songs he's released so far, by the way-and instantly crystallized a simple new idea: write, record, repeat. Instead of a new album, he'd work on a new state of mind.            Although he'd already begun to work behind the mixing board with earlier signees to Innovative Leisure,Moonlight was El Khatib's first full-scale production credit-an experience of deep commitment to every level of making an album, from the first idea to the very last mix. He'd locked himself in an L.A. studio for thirty days, and after a long month of vintage gear, field recordings of funerals, so-crazy-it-might-work sample editing and more than a little whiskey, he walked out on April Fool's Day with his most daring and distinctive album ever. That meant that when he finally finished touring for Moonlight and started at Jazzcats that winter, he truly knew what he could do in a studio.            So El Khatib teamed up with Bell and submerged himself completely into recording, this time decamping to Jazzcats for week after week of lockdown improvisation. (And night after night of recovery-or discovery-at some of Long Beach's oldest and least-revitalized bars.) This was a new project, based on turning limitations-limited time, limited instruments, limited knowledge of how exactly to play strange new instruments-into inspiration, and of working non-stop with Bell to chase every idea until it either took flight or cracked into pieces. Although only two songs have materialized so far, there are more coming. In fact, there are more being made right now.            Moonlight was when Hanni tested every rule there is about making an album, but now he's not making an album at all. Instead, this is process as public performance: an artist releasing music to the world almost in real time, with nothing to interfere with the purity or intimacy. (If you were in L.A. on Record Store Day, you could've even got a special one-of-a-kind 7" of one of the songs, made especially for you by Bell and his record-cutting lathe.) Normally, at this point in a band bio, you'd get to find out what's coming next. But no one really knows what's coming next-not even El Khatib. All anyone can do for now is just listen.

ENTRANCE Announces the February 24thRelease of New Full-Length Studio Album –
Book of Changes on Thrill Jockey

Album Follows Limited Edition Promises EP Release & Successful US, UK and EU Tours with Beach House, Explosions in the Sky, and Scott Fagan

New York, NY – ENTRANCE is Guy Blakeslee, a Baltimore-born, Los Angeles-based musician who is preparing to release a new full-length studio album –  Book of Changes  – on February 24th.  The 10-song set is the first new ENTRANCE album in more than a decade and was produced by Blakeslee with the help of American songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist David Vandervelde (Father John MistyTim KinsellaJay Bennett) who also mixed the album.  Additional mixing came from Chris Coady (Future IslandsCass McCombs, Tobias Jesso Jr.) who lent his talents to focus track “Always the Right Time.”  The album was mastered by Grammy Nominated engineer Sarah Register (David BowieThe Shins).

Book of Changes documents the journey back to ENTRANCE for an artist who has gone through a creative rebirth.  Blakeslee takes you on that transformative trip with him, with his powerful vibrato and rich baritone, uplifting and transporting the listener throughout the album.  A self-taught guitarist, he flips a right-handed guitar to be played left handed and often finger picks his electric guitar.  On the new album he’s joined by several very talented friends including former bandmate Paz Lenchantin (PixiesSilver Jews), Frank Lenz (Pedro the LionThe Weepies) and Lael Neale.  In addition, the accompanying art by LA-based critically-acclaimed artist  Amanda Charchian  further conveys the ideas expressed in song through the imagery; with the cover featuring the lone and confident subject holding freshly blossomed orchids - reflecting the changes Blakeslee has gone through himself.

The new album follows the September 16th release of  Promises  – a limited edition ENTRANCE EP that was supported with a series of live performances including select headlining shows that had Blakeslee premiering his new band as well as supporting slots with Beach House (US, August), Explosions in the Sky (UK, October) and Scott Fagan (UK/EU, October) that featured ENTRANCE as a solo act.  The response to the live shows has been incredible, with ENTRANCE drawing comparisons to Jeff Buckley,Luther PerkinsIron & Wine and Rufus Wainwright

Porcelain Raft Announces New Album "Microclimate" To Be Released February 3rd

PORCELAIN RAFT ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM MICROCLIMATE TO BE RELEASED FEBRUARY 3RD ON VOLCANIC FIELD
RELEASES GORGEOUS NEW SINGLE "DISTANT SHORE"
ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH WILD BEASTS NOWPhoto Credit: Jennifer Medina
Listen to "Distant Shore"
We last heard from Italian born singer-songwriter Porcelain Raft over the summer of 2015 when he gave us the Half Awake EP, it was the first release for Mauro Remiddi, the project's mastermind in almost 2 years. The EP was a welcome return and showed an artist continuing to push not only his own boundaries but explore the realms of dreamy, hazy, synth based pop. Half Awake was a release for fans to dig their teeth into especially for those who fell for his debut LP Strange Weekend and now he has returned with his third full length Microclimate, his biggest sounding and most expansive collection of songs to date.
Microclimate will be released on February 3rd on Volcanic Field, Porcelain Raft's own label and creative space with a special limited edition run of 250 colored vinyl.
Porcelain Raft is also kicking off his North American tour with UK favorites Wild Beasts today. The tour includes stops in LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, DC, Boston and finishes in New York with 2 shows at LPR and Music Hall of Williamsburg. All tour dates are listed below.
The album was recorded by the Remiddi in his studio in East LA's Highland Park neighborhood and was mixed by Remiddi's longtime collaborator Chris Coady at the legendary Sunset Sounds Studios. Throughout Microclimate, we hear acoustic guitars mixed with rusty-like synths, strings morph into underwater drum machines, and at the centre of each song Remiddi's voice is as present as ever.
The new landscapes, topography, and climate all influenced and inspired the songs on the album, in particular a trip to Big Sur where the landscapes blew him away. Remiddi explains, "By definition a microclimate is 'a local set of atmospheric conditions that differ from those in the surrounding areas.' The unique temperature and humidity of a coast line, the moss growing on a large rock by the sea, those are microclimates and in a way the 11 songs of the album are 11 microclimates themselves." Each song has a specific world and atmosphere, each song is an independent experience from the next, but at the same time, if you listen to the lyrics, you can feel one body of work.
The two previous releases from Porcelain Raft, 2011's debut LP Strange Weekend and the follow up Permanent Signal both felt like Remiddi was on some kind of journey, asking questions and exploring new lands. Microclimate feels like he has discovered something along the way, and whilst he doesn't have all the answers he has something important to say, culminating with the final song on the album. Here we hear Remiddi softly sing, "the poets were right, it was always an illusion, some people came back with visions, some other with conclusions."  In the end, perhaps it's not where you have been that really matters but more importantly, what you came back with.
Microclimate is the third full length from Porcelain Raft and arguably his most powerful record to date. It will be released February 3rd on Volcanic Field.
Pre-order Microclimate here.
