Pure Comedy available in Europe from Bella Union
and the rest of the world from Sub Pop.Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy is the highly anticipated follow-up to his internationally acclaimed album, I Love You, Honeybear. The album will be released April 7th on Deluxe 2xLP / 2xLP / CD / DL / CS in Europe through Bella Union and the rest of the world from Sub Pop.
Pure Comedy highlights include the title track alongside standouts “Leaving LA,” “Total Entertainment Forever,” “Ballad of the Dying Man,” “When The God Of Love Returns There’ll Be Hell To Pay” and “Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before The Revolution”.
Since 2012, Since 2012, Father John Misty aka Josh Tillman has unexpectedly emerged as a singular (if not undeniably, um, idiosyncratic) voice. Whether by virtue of his lyrics, which routinely defy the presumed polarities of wit and empathy; his live performances which may perhaps be described best as “intimately berzerk," or the infuriating line he seems to occupy between canny and total fraud online or in interviews, Father John Misty has cultivated a rare space for himself in the musical landscape - that of a real enigma. Pure Comedy sees Tillman at the height of these powers: as a lyricist, and equally so a cultural observer - at times bordering on freakishly prescient. Tillman’s bent critiques, bared humanity and gently warped classic songwriting are all here in equal measure and - at 75 minutes - there’s a veritable fuck ton of it. The album navigates themes of progress, technology, fame, the environment, politics, aging, social media, human nature, human connection and his own role in it all with his usual candor, and in terms as timely as they are timeless.
Tillman wrote the majority of Pure Comedy throughout 2015 and recorded all the basic tracking and vocals live to tape (in no more than two takes each) at United Studios (fka the legendary Ocean Way Studios, favored by Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys) in Los Angeles March 2016.
Pure Comedy was co-produced once again by Josh Tillman and long-time producer Jonathan Wilson; mixed by Tillman, Wilson and Trevor Spencer, and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios. The album features string, horn and choral arrangements from classical iconoclast Gavin Bryars (Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet, Sinking Of The Titanic), with additional contributions from Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett.
Pure Comedy’s front/back covers and gatefold feature a gargantuan original piece (his first ever commission of its kind) by Ed Steed (The New Yorker) and is now available for preorder through Father John Misty’s Official Store, Sub Pop Mega Mart, andBella Union in the following formats:
A Deluxe 2xLP version on aluminum & copper vinyl, a die-cut customizable jacket with 4 interactive “background” sleeves (so you can have whatever sky you damn well feel like as the cover), all encased in a clear slipcase. Includes a fold-out poster and an exclusive holographic tarot card by Ed Steed.A 2xLP gatefold version also available in 4 cover variations on black vinylA CD gatefold digipak with slipcase available in 4 cover variationsDigitalCS
Cover variations for the standard LP and CD will be randomly distributed. Collect them all! Please!
LP orders through Father John Misty’s Official Store,megamart.subpop.com, Bella Union and select independent retailers will receive a limited 7” single featuring the first physical release of fan favorite “Real Love Baby” on the A-side and the as yet unreleased track, "Rejected Generic Pop Song, March '15 #3” on the B-side (while supplies last). A new t-shirt design will be available from Sub Pop and Bella Union, in addition to a new line of merch from Father John Misty’s online store.
Tillman and Grant James (“Funtimes in Babylon,” “I Love You, Honeybear”) also co-directed Pure Comedy: The Film. Pure Comedy is a gorgeously rendered black & white document of the live tracking, as well as a surreal look into Tillman’s writing process. A six-person crew, complete with cranes in the tracking rooms, captured every moment of the recording, giving the viewer intimate audience to actual album takes, including the one and only 2:00am performance of the 13-minute “Leaving LA." It also features the only known recording of Tillman’s love ballad to his sound engineer Trevor Spencer. The 30-minute film is available for viewing now at Father John Misty’s new website.
Father John Misty’s first live appearance in support of Pure Comedy will be on the Coachella mainstage, Fridays April 14th, and 21st.

PIXIES Announce 2017 North American Tour
PIXIES ANNOUNCE 2017 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
LOS ANGELES, CA - Tuesday, January 24, 2017 -- Pixies, one of the most influential alt/rock bands of all time, will take their signature aural mix of psychedelia, dissonance, surf-rock and loud-quiet-loud on a five-week tour across North America in 2017, the first of a three-leg trek across the continent. Following stops in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the band's first-ever South African concerts, the North American tour will launch at the Fox Theatre in Pomona, CA on Friday, April 21, and will see the band playing theatres and open-air venues. There will be several special ticket pre-sales prior to the general on-sale which will begin this Friday, January 27 at 10AM local time. Log on towww.pixiesmusic.com for all pre-sale and general onsale purchasing details.
Public Access TV* and Cymbals Eat Guitars** will split the support slot over the course of the tour.
For these 2017 dates, Pixies - Joey Santiago/guitar, Black Francis/guitar & vocals, David Lovering/drums and bassist Paz Lenchantin - will introduce to its North American audiences a brand new stage set designed by their longtime production manager Simon Foster and lighting designer Myles Mangino. The design is simple and sleek and fashioned around special pods that house all of the lighting, positioned behind the band. Fans can expect a set list comprised of the classics and catalogue rarities as well as newer songs from Indie Cindy and the band's latest release, Head Carrier. As is the norm, there will be no firm setlist for Pixies' shows; their sets, while pulled from nearly 90 songs that the band has rehearsed and is prepared to play, will change somewhat from night to night with every number determined just before it's performed.
Pixies kicked off the European leg of their 2016-17 global run last November, playing sold-out shows throughout the UK and wrapping up in Birmingham on December 8. Confirmed dates for the 2017 North American trek are as follows:

Mew Announces New CD, "Visuals"
MEW ANNOUNCES VISUALS,NEW ALBUM DUE OUT APRIL 28, 2017Hear New Track "Carry Me To Safety"(Listen here: http://found.ee/cmtsyoutube)
LOS ANGELES, CA - Tuesday, January 24, 2017 -- Mew is pleased to unveil news of the band's upcoming (seventh) album Visuals on April 28, 2017 through Play It Again Sam alongside details of a European run of live dates in May. Unlike previous albums, Visuals arrives fairly quickly on the back of 2015's + - album and came to fruition as front-man Jonas Bjerre explains; "The live shows around that album saw us hit a creative peak, writing tracks on-the-road and the spark was lit. Breaking the normal cycle felt right and we wanted to make an album spontaneously retaining the energy we'd generated on that world tour, rather than wait the normal three or four years." Recorded and self-produced in Copenhagen,Visuals was completed in under a year and sees Mew at its most concise, each song representing its own little chapter and narrative. The first taste of the album comes in the shape of the mesmerizing intricacies of the album's finale "Carry Me To Safety." Meanwhile, the slow-build euphoria of album opener, "Nothingness And No Regrets," and expansive 80's-style pop of "The Wake Of Your Life" countered by the discordant stomp of the intriguingly titled "Candy Pieces All Smeared Out" and blissful glide of "In A Better Place," compete across eleven tracks that convey an irrepressible ebullience of a band on its debut album. Many of the newer tracks evolved in light of what was happening globally. "It was pretty dark last year on many levels, so lyrically that definitely came into play, it's an important reminder to treasure the here and now," says Bjerre. Visuals feels like the culmination for one of rock's most ambitious and inventive groups. Twenty years into its career, Visuals is the distinctive sound of Mew seizing the moment... Mew will embark on a short run of European shows in May (listed below) with plans for a North American tour in the works. Visuals will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally through Play It Again Sam and is available to pre-order here: http://found.ee/mewstore May 201717 Paradiso - Amsterdam, Netherlands19 Point Ephemere - Paris, France20 Trix - Antwerp, Belgium21 Trinity - Bristol, UK22 O2 Ritz - Manchester, UK23 Shepherds Bush Empire - London, UK25 Luxor - Köln, Germany26 Knust - Hamburg, Germany27 Immergut Festival - Neutrelitz, Germany

Las Rosas announces debut album, shares video
LAS ROSAS ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM EVERYONE GETS EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT DUE MARCH 10 VIA ERNEST JENNING RECORD CO.
SHARES VIDEO FOR "BOYS"PREMIERED VIA BROOKLYN VEGAN
RELEASE SHOW SLATED FOR APRIL 8 AT BABY'S ALL RIGHT
ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN TOUR DATESAND SXSW APPEARANCES

Ernest Jenning Record Co. is proud to announce Everyone Gets Exactly What They Want , the debut full-length from New York City trio Las Rosas, due March 10. Brooklyn Vegan provided the premiere of the first music from the record via the video for " Boys ," which is now available to stream or embed HERE . Everyone Gets Exactly What They Want is available for preorder HERE .
The band has an extensive European tour planned, beginning on February 1 at Patronaat inHaarlem, NL. They will tour through much of the continent before finishing back in the Netherlands at V11 in Rotterdam on March 3. These dates will be followed by a SXSW run from March 16-19, after which they will return to New York for an album release show at Baby's All Right in Brooklynon April 8. They will be joined at the release show by St. Pé (Black Lips, Diamond Rugs). The full list of tour dates can be found below.
Las Rosas are at the top of their game -- with their debut album Everyone Gets Exactly What They Want on the horizon and a month and a half of European tour dates staring them down, as well as scheduled appearances at SXSW 2017, and US touring through the rest of the year, things have never looked brighter for the New York City trio. Before Las Rosas, these three gents did time in critically acclaimed and like-minded acts including Harlem and Wild Yaks, and those experiences have been distilled into a singular LP that combines wit and humor with sneering, whip-smart garage rock.
Much like the personalities that comprise the group, the music on the record isn't easily defined or confined -- the muscular charisma of "Boys" sidles up comfortably alongside the groovy optimism of "The Red Zone," just as the breezy "Bad Universe" is right at home with the crunchy malaise and social consciousness of "Cops."
Everyone's 13 tracks carry the listener through a medley of styles, mid-song tempo changes and unexpected chord patterns that keep things engaging from front to back. Despite the stylistic variation, the album has a cohesiveness that usually only comes after years of performing as a unit, and the airtight songwriting is matched only by the group's locked-in playing. By turns sinister and sincere, the album is as enigmatic as any you're likely to hear in 2017.

Las Rosas upcoming tour dates:2/1 - Patronaat - Haarlem, NL2/2 - De Spieghel - Groningen, NL2/3 - TBA - Berlin, DE2/4 - Huhnermanhattan Club - Halle, DE2/7 - Theremin - Prague, CZ2/10 - Casotto - Lugano, CH2/14 - Void - Bordeaux, FR2/15 - El Almacen De Little Bobby - Santander, ES2/16 - Lata De Zinc - Oviedo, ES2/17 - Bermeoko Kafe Antzokia - Bermeo, ES2/18 - Cara B Festival - Barcelona, ES2/19 - El Pati - Perpignan, FR2/20 - Le Ravelin - Tolouse, FR2/21 - Chien Stupide - Nantes, FR2/22 - Le Mecanique Ondulatoire - Paris, FR2/23 - Le Biplan - Lille, FR2/27 - Shacklewell Arms - London, UK3/1 - De Zwerver - Leffingen, BE3/2 - Electron - Breda, NL3/3 - V11 - Rotterdam, NL3/16-19 - SXSW - Austin, TX4/8 - Baby's All Right (album release show) - Brooklyn, NY *

Tim Cohen's 'Luck Man' out now on Sinderlyn

After over a decade of writing and releasing music under various monikers, Tim Cohen is back with his fourth solo record, Luck Man.
The Fresh & Only's / Magic Trick frontman wants make you aware of life's imperfections; he likes to play devil's advocate...or maybe he's more like the devil's buddy, offering up his own dark but playful asides. On Luck Man, Cohen has created a lush, insular world that deals with the uneasiness of accepting life's inherent flaws. Recorded in his attic and at El Studio in San Francisco after recently moving back to a city he longed called home, Luck Man is a personal statement distilled from Cohen's own experiences. "I draw upon little moments and memories to make music," he says. "I like to think I'm leaving bits of wisdom behind, but I don't possess the wisdom for longer than it takes to make a song. I inherit it momentarily, write it down, attach a melody that fits the words in rhythm, and then record it." Attempting to answer the unanswerable, Cohen aims to fill this existential void with his songwriting. The intricacy of "John Hughes" belie Cohen's seemingly simple writing process where warmth and comfort meets a questioning anxiety. However, there's always more to each song than meets the eye.
Influenced by Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece as well as his one-time day job as a delivery driver (see "Meat Is Murder") and other daily, travails, Cohen eschews focusing on overarching topics like love, hope or despair and, instead, creates his own stories with fleeting, yet quietly complex characters and thoughts.

Today, Sylvan Esso -- Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn -- have revealed the mesmerizing video for their song "Kick Jump Twist." Directed by Mimi Cave (Danny Brown, tUnEyArDs), and featuring dancer Gary Reagan, the video both complements and enhances the innate energy of the track.
Says Mimi, "We shot the video two days after the election, and we were all very much having our own processes with what had happened. Everything was so fresh that the crew's moods were generally a mix of deer-in-headlights, sadness and anger. At the same time, we couldn't help but feel a visceral excitement and connection to seeing Gary dance his heart out all day. It was like he was channeling all our chaotic energy into every take."
In addition to the video's release today, Sylvan Esso will also be heading to the UK and Europe for four special live shows, in addition to announcing select festival dates in the U.S. this summer. The dates are a chance for fans to hear the band's new material, taken from their upcoming sophomore album, including smash single "Radio," which the band recently performed on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, and "Kick Jump Twist."
Sylvan Esso will play:
5/2 - SchwuZ - Berlin, Germany5/3 - Bitterzoet - Amsterdam, Netherlanda5/4 - Village Underground - London, England5/5 - Point Ephemere - Paris, France5/12-14 - Shaky Knees Music Festival - Atlanta, GA5/26-28 - Boston Calling - Boston, MA

Silver/Lead is the 15th studio album from musical pioneers Wire.

Today pinkflag is launching Silver / Lead with lead track 'Short Elevated Period'. Streaming on NPR and of course our soundcloud. The album is also available for pre-order from today. This time we are releasing it in 3 physical formats, CD, Vinyl and Special Edition - a hard backed 80 page case bound book, with text by Graham Duff, extended credits, lyrics, brand new interviews and exclusive colour photographs as well as the CD itself. This format will be only produced in limited quantities but unlike The Change Becomes Us Special Edition with which it shares a format, it will be also available in selected independent record shops. Here's the album press release.
Silver/Lead is the 15th studio album from musical pioneers Wire. It arrives on the 40th anniversary of their debut performance. Yet it’s about as far from nostalgia as you could get. This is the sound of a uniquely addictive 21st century psychedelic post-punk.
Colin Newman and Matt Simms’ guitar work is alternately jagged and luminous, while bassist Graham Lewis’s ear-catching lyrics are vivid yet oblique. Meanwhile, drummer Robert Grey provides a virtual masterclass in percussive minimalism. But it’s how the various instruments mesh together that really counts. And Newman’s production creates a sonic space in which even the smallest gesture is accorded some recognition.
Highlights include the optimistic dazzle of ‘Diamonds In Cups’, with its almost T. Rex-style buzz and chug, and the moody swing of ‘This Time’. Elsewhere on the musical spectrum, there’s the menacing widescreen grandeur of ‘Playing Harp for the Fishes’ and breakneck-paced guitar pop of ‘Short Elevated Period’.
Wire are one of the world’s most ground-breaking bands, their influence acknowledged by bands as diverse as Blur, Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Savages. But they have never been interested in exploiting past glories. For Wire, there is only ever one possible direction: forwards. So it’s perhaps not surprising that over recent years, they’ve played strings of sold-out shows, achieved career-best record sales, and been cited as a strong influence by yet another generation of bands.
Wire’s last three albums garnered nothing but rave reviews. From 2013’s strangely beautiful Change Becomes Us (“It’s fantastic.” – Pitchfork) to the crackling motorik of 2015’s Wire (“It’s all really well turned, potent and crisp.” – The Guardian), and last year’s punchy mini-album Nocturnal Koreans (“It's a cracker and sounds defiantly modern.” – The Quietus). Consequently, although it may be being released on the band’s 40th anniversary, Silver/Lead is an album which has nothing to do with the past and everything to do with the future.
2017
Although it hasn't been the best kept secret, it may surprise some that Wire will release their 3rd album in as many years in 2017. In fact the last year Wire released a 3rd album in a 3rd successive year was 1979. Clearly something is going on! Now we can start to reveal that story. The release date of 31st March 2017 is neither arbitrary nor accidental. It is in fact the closest available release day to an important anniversary for Wire. It is not the anniversary of the first time a band called Wire existed or the anniversary of the release of
Pink Flag
, but it’s the anniversary of the 1st gig by Wire as a 4 piece – originally having been a 5 piece who mainly played material by it’s then leader George Gill. April Fool’s day 1977 was the first time a band that anyone familiar with Wire, even today, would recognise took to the stage.
The event was even documented - HERE
So what does it mean to Wire to be 40 years old? To be honest, something & nothing at the same time. We could have even chosen to ignore it but in a way it’s more honest to embrace it, even if it’s already being tagged as “40 years of not looking back”. We will of course celebrate it by a new album and several DRILL : FESTIVALS (more news about those in a couple weeks) and there will also be touring. You will be well advised to keep an eye on your inbox, pinkflag.com and Wire’s Facebook & twitter.
