“Ms. Martinez speak-sings at a pace that recalls the blues but with an affect that suggests perturbation or getting stunned or sweating, or all three...”
New York Times
New York City’s glorious garage-noise mutants Boss Hog have released the track “Formula X.” The track appears on their first studio album in 17 years, Brood X , due for release this March 24th via In The Red Records. Listen and share “Formula X” here.
Led by Cristina Martinez (ably assisted by her faithful sideman/husband Jon Spencer, as ever playing Flavor Flav to Cristina’s Chuck D), Brood X feels less like the work of a group who’ve been on ice for so long, more a slithering and sludgy monster of an album, a boiling pot of hot funk keys, growling punk attack, searing blues breaks and the ground-shaking holler of Martinez.
Having recently shared a new track in ‘17’, whose dark observational poetry has already been championed by The New York Times, The Quietus, SPIN and more. Speaking of their almost two-decade gestation, Cristina explains:
“There are different broods of cicadas emerging in cyclical periods, there are 13-year cicadas and 17-year cicadas. That’s what Boss Hog is like – we’re operating on our own cycle. We go underground for a number of years, re-emerge, make beautiful sounds, and then go away. That’s our cyclical life.”
On hiatus since they finished promoting 2000’s icy, wonderful ‘Whiteout’ album, Boss Hog began stirring again late in 2008 with the first of several short runs of shows. “We’d play a handful of shows, once a year,” Martinez remembers. “Festivals, the Amphetamine Reptile 25th Anniversary party, some benefit shows.” Things started getting serious a couple of years later, when the Boss Hog all-stars – Martinez, Spencer, bassist Jen Jurgensen, drummer Hollis Queens and keysman Mickey Finn – decided this reunion habit was worth committing to wax.
Cooked up in the same Lower East Side basement where Boss Hog brewed their first blistering noiseouts, and cut at Michigan’s Key Club Recording Company on the same Flickinger N32 Matrix console Sly Stone used for There’s A Riot Goin’ On, ‘Brood X’ is serious music for serious times, the perfect soundtrack for a necessary revolution.
The 17-year cicadas have re-awoken, and not a moment too soon. New York has changed beyond recognition and there’s a buffoonish villain entering the White House, but Martinez’s towering vocals and vicious, hilarious, emboldening lyrics have never sounded so sharp, nor Boss Hog so timely. Opener ‘Billy’, all brawny low-end and delirious funk organ, finds Cristina and Jon howling about “The brink of destruction!” over apocalyptic beats, while Ground Control, a prismatic vision of today’s Big Apple, includes the bitter observation, “This is the cost of privilege”.
“A lot of Cristina’s lyrics on this album resonate with me more deeply since the election,” nods Spencer. “They’re blues songs, protest songs.”
“The songs do feel oddly relevant now,” Cristina adds.

Guided By Voices Announce New Double LP, Robert Pollard's 100th! | Announce U.S. Tour l LP Out 4/7 On Rockathon Records
GUIDED BY VOICES AUGUST BY CAKE IS ROBERT POLLARD’S 100TH ALBUM!
LISTEN TO "HIKING SKIN", FIRST TASTE OF 32-SONG DOUBLE ALBUM.
ANNOUNCE U.S. TOUR THIS SPRING + PLAYING COACHELLA
Photo Cred: Sandlin Gaither
LISTEN & SHARE: Guided By Voices - "Hiking Skin" Guided By Voices August By Cake (April 7, GBV Inc Records) is the one hundredth studio album that Robert Pollard has released since 1986's Forever Since Breakfast. To put that in perspective, Bob Dylan has released roughly 39 studio albums since 1959. And that includes the Traveling Wilburys.
A highly anticipated record with the new line-up (returning GBV veterans Doug Gillard and Kevin March, virgins Bobby Bare Jr and Mark Shue) that has been wowing audience in clubs and festivals throughout 2016. It's the most musically adept and versatile line-up Pollard has ever assembled.
With 32 songs, August By Cake is also GBV's first ever double-album, and song contributions from all five bandmembers is additional icing on this particular cake, setting album #100 apart from the previous 99.
The double album is an important format in Pollard's own musical iconography, and he doesn't take the form lightly -- one reason he's planned and abandoned several would-be GBV double albums in the past is his high regard for foundational works like Quadrophenia, the White Album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Daydream Nation, Zen Arcade, Double Nickels On the Dime -- "defining records for these bands," says Pollard. It's important to him that August By Cake not just be a double album but that it be a great double album.
Spring tour dates, including Coachella Festival are below, and there are several surprises in store for 2017.
TOUR DATES

(Photo Credit: Photo by Marc Gabor - click image for high-res version)The Los Angeles-based duo Tashaki Miyaki will release their highly anticipated debut album 'The Dream' on April 7 via Metropolis Records. This week the band shares the first taste of the upcoming release with the single "Girls On T.V." "This track emerged out of observing fame culture," Paige Stark explains. "Things like the emergence of reality TV stardom and social media celebrity have elevated fame culture to a new sphere. We are living in Andy Warhol meets Orwellian vision of the future and I find it terrifying. It's all about "likes" and numbers and now our country is being run by a monster who was created by this very machine. The title is playing on the perspective I'm singing from a media brainwashed girl that only wants to be famous like the girls on tv." Stream the track over at Interview Magazine and on SoundCloud. The Los Angeles-based band Tashaki Miyaki have kept it mysterious since their inception. In their early days, the band's members often performed under aliases and even the roots of their moniker remain hazy (though it may or may not have first come from a mispronunciation of Japanese director Takashi Miike's name). The band was born out of a late night jam session in early 2011, when local legend Joel Jerome recorded what would become the band's first original song, "Somethin' is Better Than Nothin" and a cover of the Everly Brothers' classic, "All I have to do is Dream." Within a few weeks of posting the songs to Bandcamp, the band was invited to London where they played their first ever live show to a packed crowd at the legendary 100 Club.
In the six years since, Tashaki Miyaki have released three singles and an EP on UK labels Luv Luv Luv, For Us Records (Rough Trade Imprint), and The Sounds of Sweet Nothing; as well as a single on their own label, Blonde Dog. Influential local label Burger Records also put out a collection of the band's early recordings. These releases received international acclaim in the NME, MOJO, The New York Times, and Pitchfork, among other outlets. The Guardian UK deemed the group a "female Jesus and Mary Chain, whose vocals cut like honey-coated razor blades." Others have compared the band to Mazzy Star, Spiritualized, and The Velvet Underground , but Tashaki Miyaki considers film to be their closest muse. Band members cite David Lynch and his composer Angelo Badalamenti , as well as Sergio Leone's partnership with Ennio Morricone to be as powerful an influence as music like Lou Reed, Neil Young, David Bowie and My Bloody Valentine. Tashaki Miyaki's songs are designed with visual inspiration: seeing the band perform live is a multimedia experience, where their haunting music is paired with ever-changing, curated cinematic backdrops, creating a full sensory experience. Their dream-like aesthetic has been mirrored in stark and alluring music videos created by talented filmmaker and friend, Juan Iglesias. Tashaki Miyaki have toured and played festivals across North America, Europe and the UK. The band has also performed at art museums around the world, including The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and MoMA, New York.
Tashaki Miyaki has spent the past couple years writing and recording their debut LP, The Dream ,produced by Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist Paige Stark and engineered by Dan Horne (Cass McCombs, Allah Las). As a writer for The Fader once observed of the band’s hypnotic sound, “It's so pretty I’m afraid saying anything else might diminish it".Tour Dates:March 6, 13, 20, 27 Los Angeles, CA - The Echo (Monday Night Residency)

SAVOY MOTEL TOUR WITH THE LEMON TWIGS BEGINS TOMORROW / HEADLINE SHOW IN LA FEBRUARY 8TH
Savoy Motel Tour With The Lemon Twigs Begins This Thursday Headline Show At The Echo February 8th Self-Titled Debut Album Available On What's Your Rupture? Records
LISTEN

Photo: Semi Song The debut album by Nashville's Savoy Motel comes from a pedigree of garage, punk, and power-pop groups (bassist Jeffrey Novak founded both Cheap Time and the Rat Traps; drummer Jessica McFarland was also in Cheap Time, and along with guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, played in Heavy Cream). Savoy Motel transposes the energy and hooks of those groups to an entirely different move: an intensely orchestrated hybrid of glam rock, soul, dance music, and showmanship. “We use rock and roll as a vehicle to reach and promote the feeling of TOTAL FREEDOM,” claims Dillon. “Savoy Motel is defined more by a feeling than a sound.” Savoy Motel achieves a compositional harmony through the meshing of the clockwork precision in the rhythms of each song, with Jessica hammering out the beats alongside a vintage Rhythm King drum machine, and Mimi locking in on guitar, alongside the interplay of three lead vocalists, while Dillon rips intense fuzz leads on every track, and Jeffrey adds the hooks on his bass. Dillon remarks: “After Jeffrey repeatedly insisted that I play more and more like Jimi and Clapton, I realized that he wanted the shit to rock, and that he was not only unafraid of, but actually going for what a lot of contemporaries would consider faux pas. I think we were all ready for something radical and new, and Jeffrey was ready to lead us there.” The whole package opens up their horizons, and yours, to a sound made by four friends tired of witnessing music eat its own tail; with unclouded judgment, creative refinements, and peerless technique, they grab that tail and stick it into a wall socket, putting the cap back on 15+ years of rock revivalism and strident genre adherence. And they make it seem easy. If it was that easy, though, everybody else would be doing it. Look around you. That’s not happening. Savoy Motel is happening. “Whatever musical past we had feels obsolete compared to what we’re doing now,” says Jeffrey. “The past turned its back on us, so we had to turn our backs on the past in order to find our future.” The band have been touring North America and the UK in support of their self-titled debut album on What’s Your Rupture? Records. Live dates with The Lemon Twigs egin this week, with headlining shows February 8th in LA and in March in various cities.

POND Announce New Album "The Weather" out May 5th
POND
New album The Weather out May 5th
Watch video for new single "Sweep Me Off My Feet"
UK, European and US Shows Announced
Photo Credit:Matt SavPOND Official SitePOND's unbridled creativity has seen them push the boundaries of psychedelic-rock. On the forthcoming album The Weather, the Perth based four-piece has created their most sharp and focused record to date featuring some of the band's most direct pop moments, while retaining POND's abstract outlook and propensity for experimentation. A stunning statement of intent, The Weather is due out on May 5th via Marathon Artists.
The new single 'Sweep Me Off My Feet' showcases delectable air of romantic expectation and synthy sophistication, the track is a new take on the band's patented space-rock. The video for 'Sweep Me Off My Feet' is streaming now on VEVO.
Of the album, POND's Nicholas Allbrook says: "It's a concept album, not completely about Perth, but focusing on all the weird contradictory things that make up a lot of colonial cities around the world. Laying out all the dark things underneath the shimmering exterior of cranes, development, money and white privilege. It's not our place, but it is our place. British, but Australian, but not REAL Australian. On the edge of the world with a hell of a lot of fucked things defining our little city, still we try and live a wholesome respectful life, while being inherently disrespectful. At the end of all this confusion in our weird little white antipodean world, there's the beach, purity and nature that brings us all together".
As with their previous album, The Weather was produced by Kevin Parker at his studio in Perth. But where 2015's Man, It Feels Like Space Again was a considered yet raw take on their garage-inflected psyche, The Weather is an ambitious, technicolor odyssey which feels like POND's coming of age.
Detailing the albums urgency, The Weather opens with the epic '30,000 Megatons'. A despairing meditation on the nuclear threat, the track spirals into synth-prog hysteria, which perfectly mirrors the escalating unease felt around the world right now. '30,000 Megatons' and 'Sweep Me Off My Feet' are available to download and stream now.
Since forming in 2008, POND have been lauded for their raucous and unpredictable live show, utilising the punk and garage-rock foundation on which the band was built to breathe new life into their songs. The band will bring The Weather to the UK for the first time on 14th February 2017, with an intimate one-off show at London's Moth Club. Tickets go on sale Friday 27th January.
The Weather is released 5th May via Marathon Artists and available to pre-order now.

BRITISH SEA POWER RETURN W. 'LET THE DANCERS INHERIT THE PARTY' OUT 3/31, SHARE "BAD BOHEMIAN" VIDEO

British Sea Power Return With New LP
Let The Dancers Inherit The Party
Out March 31st on Golden Chariot (via Caroline International)
Reveal Video For Lead Single “Bad Bohemian”

"A bittersweet rush of Autumnal melancholia, ‘Bad Bohemian’ makes for a cleansing dose of classic British Sea Power, and perfect listening for this frostbitten new year.” - NME

Acclaimed UK rock outfit British Sea Power are back with the forthcoming LP ‘Let The Dancers Inherit The Party’ out March 31st on Golden Chariot (via Caroline International). Cementing their return is the effervescentlead single “Bad Bohemian”, available now as an instant grat with album pre-order.
An invigorating cut of pulsating rock, “Bad Bohemian” is brought to life in the hyper-kinetic, dadaist video, revealed today. The brilliantly manic clip – conceived, directed and edited by singer/guitarist Yan Wilkinson - features the song’s lyrics in Dadaist text, frenetic interpretive dancing, meme cats and dying bugs.
Of the video and single, Yan says: “I wanted the video to capture the feeling in between the real world and the virtual world; the way you can go from watching an entertaining Korean performer working with imaginary objects to live footage of war torn countries then sink into a world of cute animals before trying and digest global politics, all within a few clicks. I was inspired by artists like Kurt Schwitters, a ‘degenerate’ artist forced to flee Nazi Germany. He used everyday objects such as bus tickets in his famed collages. Today kitten videos are our everyday objects. Adding a video of a kitten is my way of paying homage to Schwitters - I was inspired by the idea that an everyday thing is capable of expressing something deeper whilst still being an everyday thing. I think the song has more going on below the surface than is at first obvious.”
The band’s first new material since 2013’s Machineries of Joy, Let The Dancers Inherit The Party is a melodic call to arms, direct and brimming with emotional urgency. It’s an album where rock muscularity joins inseparably with pop immediacy like a crate of bubbly exploding inside a Marshall stack.
This new 12-track collection sees the band return to the exhilarating, bright-minded guitar music that earned them their breakout nomination for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize as they cover subject matter ranging from the stars in the night sky to the methodology of media manipulation.
Guitarist Martin Noble says of the album: “There wasn’t a plan to create an album with any particular subject matter but we’ve kind of ended up with a case of ’think global, act local’ – an album where individuals are dealing with their domestic and personal lives against a background of uncontrollable international lunacy. It was made to a background of politicians perfecting the art of unabashed lying, of social-media echo chambers, of click-bait and electronic Tonka Toys to keep us entertained and befuddled. All this can easily make the individual feel futile. But I think we’ve ended up addressing this confusion in an invigorating way, rather than imprisoning the listener in melancholy. Musically, it’s our most direct album and maybe the first one where we maintain a coherent mood from start to finish. Perhaps a little clarity isn’t a bad thing at this point.”
Recorded in Sussex, London and on the Isle of Skye, Let The Dancers Inherit The Party follows the band’s five studio albums for the great Rough Trade Records – a catalogue of releases that saw BSP become the longest continually-signed band in the label’s history. Rough Trade remain a vital part of the BSP story and will continue to do so, but the new album is being licensed from the band’s own Golden Chariot label to Caroline International.
Let The Dancers Inherit The Party album art (below) features typography influenced by the German Dadaist artist Kurt Schwitters, whose work BSP’s two vocalists, Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson, discovered while growing up on the edge of the English Lake District. Schwitters fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and ended up living in the Lakes, where examples of his work now reside, including at Abbot Hall Gallery in Kendal. BSP have long used Schwitters’ sound-poetry recordings in their live shows and, in 2013, Yan created a Schwitters soundscape for Tate Britain.
The entire recording of the album was funded by the band’s remarkably dedicated audience. Money was raised via a multi-faceted program with pledges ranging from pre-orders for a limited-edition box-set version of the album to paying £1,500 for a tattoo that gives entry to all future BSP shows.

No Joy announces the CREEP EP, which will be released on Feb. 24 on the brand new label collective Grey Market, and today shares the first single & video for "Califone" via NPR. It was produced by Jorge Elbrecht, who also appears on the EP as a guest musician. Check out Feb. & March tour dates below, including a stop at SXSW.Bio:
For most listeners, No Joy are a standout from the shoegaze revival, that wall of noise lead by its two female band members Jasamine White-Gluz and Laura Lloyd and their long headbanging blonde locks. In a 2011 Blackbook piece on the band’s detached yet visceral live show, the writer coyly commented “they are playing with their backs to the audience…shy girls.” For years, principal songwriter and lead vocalist Jasamine White-Gluz was that shy girl. It translated onto their albums (her voice was never too high in the mixes, constantly obscured by layers of guitar) as well as their live shows (instead of standing center stage in the shows, she opted to stay hidden in the corner of the stage). With the latest effortCREEP EP, White-Gluz is starting to shed those insecurities and bring a revived spirit to who we know as No Joy.As the principal writer of their past catalog, White-Gluz steers the material on CREEP in new directions, drawing on varied influences ranging from Industrial to New Age. With co-writer and producer Jorge Elbrecht, the pair create a soundscape that is both familiar and fresh. Tracked in Montreal at Hotel 2 Tango and in White-Gluz’s Little Italy apartment, the sound is huge. Dynamic juxtapositions of dark and light, feminine and virile are cemented together with their signature earworm hooks. No Joy are challenging themselves by distancing from the traditional rock band formula, creating a new live show to accompany the release. By taking control of their new direction, it’s the beginning of a new era for No Joy.

Wire kick off extensive celebrations for their 40th year as a band in typical forward-thinking prolific form, with a new album. Silver/Lead is due March 31st via the band's pinkflag label and today they share a first taste with track "Short Elevated Period" which premiered today at NPR.
Silver/Lead is the 15th studio album from musical pioneers Wire. It arrives on the 40th anniversary of their debut performance. Yet it’s about as far from nostalgia as you could get. This is the sound of a uniquely addictive 21st century psychedelic post-punk.
Colin Newman and Matt Simms’ guitar work is alternately jagged and luminous, while bassist Graham Lewis’s ear-catching lyrics are vivid yet oblique. Meanwhile, drummer Robert Grey provides a virtual masterclass in percussive minimalism. But it’s how the various instruments mesh together that really counts. And Newman’s production creates a sonic space in which even the smallest gesture is accorded some recognition.
Highlights include the optimistic dazzle of “Diamonds In Cups,” with its almost T. Rex-style buzz and chug, and the moody swing of “This Time.” Elsewhere on the musical spectrum, there’s the menacing widescreen grandeur of "Playing Harp For The Fishes" and breakneck-paced guitar pop of "Short Elevated Period."
Wire are one of the world’s most ground-breaking bands, their influence acknowledged by bands as diverse as Blur, Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Savages. But they have never been interested in exploiting past glories. For Wire, there is only ever one possible direction: forwards. So it’s perhaps not surprising that over recent years, they’ve played strings of sold-out shows, achieved career-best record sales, and been cited as a strong influence by yet another generation of bands.
Wire’s last three albums garnered nothing but rave reviews. From 2013’s strangely beautifulChange Becomes Us (“It’s fantastic.” – Pitchfork) to the crackling motorik of 2015’s Wire (“It’s all really well turned, potent and crisp.” – The Guardian), and last year’s punchy mini-album Nocturnal Koreans (“It's a cracker and sounds defiantly modern.” – The Quietus). Consequently, although it may be being released on the band’s 40th anniversary, Silver/Lead is an album which has nothing to do with the past and everything to do with the future.
