Laura Burhenn (Mynabirds) Art Protest Targets Trump

Laura Burhenn (of the Mynabirds) Announces “I Know Why I Sing” A Visual Art Protest & Fundraiser for theRape Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN),Available Now on Etsy

Visual Protest + New Track, “Good Medicine”,Targets Trump Inauguration + Rape Culture

"I'm gonna do what I can right where I stand." - The Mynabirds, "Buffalo Flower"“If anyone tries to tell you it's just a song, you tell them it’s real good medicine." - Laura Burhenn, “Good Medicine”

Laura Burhenn has just launched “I Know Why I Sing”, a visual art protest in response to Trump’s inauguration and the ongoing prevalence of rape culture in our country.

The artwork -- 30 original gouache and ink (framed and signed) birds -- was created in conjunction with Burhenn’s new track, “Good Medicine”, which she wrote in the aftermath of the Brock Turner rape trial and the Trump "Grab them by the pussy" videotape leak. The song, and the art, are meant to remind everyone of the power we have to change and influence our own communities. All 30 pieces of art are available now on Etsy (HERE). The birds are also on display at Woodcat Coffeeshop in Echo Park, Los Angeles, through February 11th, with a closing party on February 11th. Proceeds from sales will benefit RAINN, the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization.
In Laura Burhenn’s words: Back in October 2016 I released a song (on Saddle Creek), “Good Medicine,” which is about the weight we feel every morning, about the tears we shed in private, and the strength with which we *choose* to keep going, one foot in front of the other. I say choose, because it is a choice. I was reminded of that choice after the woman who was raped by Brock Turner shared the open letter of her experience and sang her truth and her song, despite what sentence the judge handed down, letting her rapist go free. She embodied Sartre: "Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you." She was the strength she wanted to see.
I cannot imagine how painful and exhausting it was for her to write that letter. I, for one, am eternally grateful that she lifted her voice to remind me, to remind us all of the choice we can make to write — to sing — our own future. We can open ourselves up to feel all the feels (and feel them deeply) and let them paralyze us — for a minute. We should; to feel the real weight of human experience will make us fiercely compassionate. But from there, we can decide to do something more. It will not always be easy; it will exhaust you. But we can choose, as Mother Theresa urges, to do it anyway. Each of the birds featured in “I Know Why I Sing” was made in the summer of 2016 as I was writing the song “Good Medicine.” While not every one is a songbird, each represents the unique voice in all of us, when we chose to lift it — no matter how uncertain or terrified we are to speak up — that can transform a heart, a community, the world. I’m donating 50% of the proceeds to RAINN, The Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, to help them do their good work as “grab-them-by-the-pussy” rape culture is normalized from the highest position of power in America.
Right now the news doesn’t seem to be getting any better. You are probably exhausted; I know I am. But I will choose to keep singing, because I know that music saves my life every day. And if I can use my voice to do some good for others, I will. I believe in the power of music and art to empower, to comfort, to heal. Whatever your song, keep singing. Do it for you and do it for me. You never know when you'll strike a chord in someone else's heart and save them, too.“Good Medicine”

Sing, little nightingale
Sing your song
Though the night
Is black and long
We'd waste away
Without your spark
Oh it helps to chase away
The dark
If anyone tries to tell you
It's just a song
You tell them
It's real good medicine

If anyone tries to tell you
It's just a song
You tell them
They should start listening

Mt. Joy Share Second Single "Sheep;" Announce North American Tour

MT. JOY SHARE SECOND SINGLE "SHEEP;" ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR, INCLUDING DATES WITH THE HEAD AND THE HEART
'Sheep' is the second single from Philadelphia band, Mt. Joy. The band was formed by Matt Quinn (Vocals/Guitar) and Sam Cooper (Guitar) this past Summer when they recorded four tracks, which would end up being their first EP. The two have been friends and played music together since they were in high school, but went their separate ways in college and didn't play music again until meeting up to jam in Los Angeles this past year. They put out their first single 'Astrovan' at the end of September. The plan was to release some music and record when they had time, but to keep their day jobs as a Law Student and Lawyer. Those plans changed when 'Astrovan' picked up steam quickly on Spotify receiving lots of playlisting and has been streamed more than 2.3 Million times since. The guys have since took the leap and dropped their day gigs to put more of their time into the music with their band, that is now a five piece, adding bass, drums and keys.
Quinn started to write the lyrics for the second single 'Sheep' in 2015 after the events surrounding 25-year-old Freddie Gray's death in Baltimore. Later, in 2016 similar events persisted very publicly in different cities throughout the country, so Quinn picked the song back up. The song is a cry for everyone, but especially white people to come together and work to end the racism that became painfully evident during the election process. The title sheep came from the band’s struggle with the fact that people who exist in a bubble blindly hate others without any attempt to understand them or their culture.

Sub Pop to reissue Soundgarden’s Ultramega OK in a newly remixed and expanded edition worldwide March 10th, 2017

Sub Pop to reissue Soundgarden’s classic debut full-length Ultramega OK in a newly remixed and expanded edition worldwide on March 10th, 2017 Photo credit: Charles PetersonHear a previously-unreleased early version of “Beyond the Wheel”

On March 10th, 2017, Sub Pop will release the remixed and expanded reissue of Soundgarden’s Ultramega OK, a long-planned “correction” of the legendary band’s GRAMMY®-nominated debut full-length. The album was originally recorded and released in 1988 on SST Records. While the band enjoyed working with the original producer, Drew Canulette, they soon realized they weren’t quite happy with the final mix. Thus, shortly after the album’s release, the band decided to remix the album for subsequent pressings. However, success intervened: the band rapidly scored a deal with A&M and began work on their major-label debut, Louder Than Love, and the Ultramega OK remix project fell by the wayside as Soundgarden climbed their way to (ultra)mega-stardom.

In 2016, after worldwide success, a hiatus, and many albums and tours, the band finally acquired the original multi-track tapes toUltramega OK and carved out time to dig into the remix. They handed the tapes over to longtime friend and engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Skin Yard), who worked with the band to create a fresh mix of the album that, for the band, ties up this persistent loose end and remedies the sound of their debut full-length.

While they were at it, the band dug out six early versions of tracks that wound up on Ultramega OK. The songs were recorded in 1987 on 8-track tape by Jack Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, and mixed by Jack Endino in 2016. These versions feature the band in raw, powerful form – sonically closer to the band’s Endino-recorded six-song debut,Screaming Life – and provide a fascinating window into the development of songs that eventually became staples of the band’s set. The six songs comprise what the band refers to asUltramega EP, and they are included in this reissue.

Ultramega OK is available for preorder available now on CD / 2xLP / DL / CASS from Sub Pop and soundgardenworld.com. The album comes packaged in a foil-stamped gatefold with custom dust sleeves, features liner notes from Kim Thayil and Jack Endino, and includes a previously unseen photo from renowned photographer Charles Peterson. Preorders of the LP from megamart.subpop.com, soundgardenworld.com, and select independent retailers will receive the Loser edition on marble blue and maroon vinyl (while supplies last).

Hailed as grunge innovators, Soundgarden redefined rock music for a generation. In the late ‘80s, the band – singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and drummer Matt Cameron – combined a punk ethos, brutal metal soundscapes, and Cornell’s ravenous roar to capture the attention of the masses. Jagged and ferocious, their music was deeply at odds with the synth-pop and hair metal which dominated the ‘80s airwaves. Early indie releases, including seminal Screaming Lifeand Ultramega OK, quickly led to a dedicated indie following as the band toured on both sides of the Atlantic. Subsequent albums, including BadmotorfingerSuperunknown, and Down on the Upside, achieved multi-platinum sales and launched the band to international fame.

Charly Bliss kick off tour with Tokyo Police Club this week

LISTEN TO "TURD

This week New York's Charly Bliss are kicking off an east coast tour with Tokyo Police Club. Their energetic live show is not to be missed.

Last year the band released "Turd," a Bandcamp exclusive song with all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood that  Rolling Stone  called "a great punk-rock banger about getting catcalled." They also released a video for "Ruby," a digital single which  Pitchfork  said was reminiscent of "the feel-good hooks that defined mid-90s power-pop bands like Letters to Cleo and the Rentals."
TOUR DATES:1/19 - Buffalo, NY @ The Waiting Room ^1/20 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom ^1/21 - Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg ^1/22 - Washington, DC @ Black Cat ^1/24 - Boston, MA @ Spotify ^1/25 - Boston, MA @ The Sinclair ^1/26 - Montreal, QC @ La Sala Rossa ^1/27 - Peterborough, ON @ The Red Dog ^

WATCH THE "RUBY" VIDEO
ABOUT CHARLY BLISS:Brooklyn bubble-grunge four-piece Charly Bliss combine irrepressible pop sensibility with raw, punchy guitars.  Eva Hendricks, the band's charismatic singer jumps and kicks her way around the stage "as though she were the result of a laboratory fusion of Eddie Vedder and a punk-rock cheerleader" (The A.V. Club).  The band's songs have infectious, powerful melodies, displaying a supernatural knack for pop hooks.
Eva and guitarist/vocalist Spencer Fox met at NYC's Webster Hall when they were 15, and soon began writing songs together over AOL Instant Messenger. They were later joined by drummer Sam Hendricks (Eva's older brother) and bassist Dan Shure, and went on to release a three-song EP called Soft Serve along with an accompanying video and comic book trilogy

The band turns heads everywhere they go and have spent the past year refining their live show on the road opening for Veruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, Tokyo Police Club, Glass Animals, and Darwin Deez.  Watching the band's infectious, fun-packed show is "like ripping off the wrapping of a present on Christmas Day" (Pancakes and Whiskey).  Simply put: Charly Bliss is "one of those bands where you either like them or you're wrong" (Upset Magazine).

Additionally, Sire/Reprise will release the first ever vinyl pressing of Friday Night Is Killing Me next Tuesday, January 24th. Tommy has roped in a few of his friends who helped make much of the new BASH & POP to hit the road with him – lead guitarist Steve “The Sleeve” Selvidge (The Hold Steady), Joe “The Kid” Sirois (Mighty Mighty BossTones) on drums and Justin “Carl” Perkins (Screeching Weasel) on bass guitar. The tour started out where the band began – at the legendary 7th St. Entry in Tommy’s hometown of Minneapolis – on January 12th and is making its way east, including a sold-out show at NYC’s Mercury Lounge this Wednesday. Fat Possum recently revealed “Never Wanted To Know,” a tight, riff-heavy romp from the new album that Tommy recorded with Steve and Joe the day that Prince passed away. The song seems to have been inspired by watching too much CNN in 2016 with such lines as “Shot down, bleeding from his back in the rain / Some kid, they didn’t even know he was eight.” The first video from the album, "On The Rocks", was previewed at the beginning of November and features clips from the band’s last couple of years, starting on January 23, 2015 when Tommy first brought Luther Dickinson, Cat Popper and Frank Ferrer into the studio to begin what would becomeAnything Could Happen, and culminating in their boisterous live experiences showcased in the “On The Rocks” video and in a pizza pajamas-filled encore from St. Paul, MN last year that was just uploaded to the band’s socials. Both albums are available for pre-order via BASH & POP’s exciting Pledge Music campaign, which can be visited here. In addition to ordering tickets for the band’s first show in Minneapolis and picking up the new music, fans can Pledge towards unforgettable experiences with Tommy and the band (Tommy officiates your wedding, “Billiards w/ BASH & POP”, Full Band Kegger in Your Basement) as well as unique memorabilia such as Tommy’s old bass guitars, both smashed AND fully intact. All pre-orders of Anything Could Happen come with an instantly gratifying download of “On The Rocks”. "Bash & Pop’s bar-soaked brand of power-pop sounds as good in 2017 as it did where Stinson last left it on 1993’s Friday Night Is Killing Me, making for a strong start to the new year for fans of no-frills rock ’n’ roll.” AV CLUB “…”Rocks” picks right back up where the first LP left off (a good thing).” BROOKLYN VEGAN “On The Rocks,” an old-school rave-up of a guitar-rocker made with considerably more piss and/or vinegar than we could reasonably expect from someone who’s been in the game as long as Stinson.”STEREOGUM BASH & POP LIVE SHOWS:            Tue.
