Frøkedal examines duality in new double single 'LTF' / 'Cracks'
Frøkedal examines duality in new double single ‘LTF' / ‘Cracks'
"shimmering folk...accompanied by gentle, intricate percussion and gleaming guitar chords" — The FADER
"Majestic and immediate, lucid and ethereal." – The New Yorker
"Startlingly beautiful” — The Sunday Times
"Frøkedal has an unwavering knack for melody...instantly gratifying" – DIY
“This is a voice that demands to be heard” – The Line Of Best Fit
“…think Fleetwood Mac getting on pretty well with Joni Mitchell.” – BBC Radio 6music, Lauren LaverneOslo, Norway based artist Frøkedal is today (25/8/17) releasing a new double single — ‘LTF’ / ‘Cracks’ - premiering a moment ago on The FADER.
Celebrated by the likes of The New Yorker, The Fader, The Sunday Times, The Independent, DIY Magazine, CLASH, The Line Of Best Fit, Q Magazine and many more; the new double single follows acclaimed single ’Stranger’ released earlier this year, as well as her Norwegian Grammy-nominated debut LP of 2016, ‘Hold On Dreamer’.

Two captivating pieces of music, ‘LTF’ and ‘Cracks’ are similar in the sense that they both describe how feelings of love are often accompanied by an almost-physical fear. Yet, the two songs differ in their urgency, instrumentation, and overall artistic delivery.
‘LTF’ is full of twists and turns, as Anne Lise Frøkedal navigates her way around bustling drum work and complex guitar passages, hinting at a state of emotional bedlam: “Everything we aimed to be / The image stirs so easily / Too fast to follow / I don’t know what you’re doing to me”.
Speaking a little more on the tracks, Frøkedal explained: "‘LTF’ is set in an urban landscape, and inspired by the escalating chaos of daily life, whereas ‘Cracks’ gets back to basics – it’s more vulnerable, and mature in that way. ‘Cracks’ suggests that the problem lies in our nature – nothing is more scary than exposing our weaknesses and imperfections."
Instrumentally, the double release could be argued to be one of Frøkedal most diverse yet. "I wanted the arrangements in ‘LTF’ to channel the more chaotic nature of the lyric” Frøkedal says.
"The second instrumental in ‘LTF’ is like a mini-postcard from last year when I was a clueless Norwegian trying to navigate the busy and bustling streets of Beijing. I laughed a lot when I realised I had musically recreated that moment” - perhaps referencing the tumultuous instrumental finale to the track.
"‘Cracks’ is painfully honest. It was difficult writing a song like that, but I really wanted to try shortening the distance a little, lay it open. I got Familien [Frøkedal’s band] to sing a verse with me, because the theme feels universal. One of my favourite percussion instruments is the Cajun triangle, and you can hear a trace of it in the bridge of ‘Cracks’. To me, it sounds like a reminder of danger lurking around the corner.”
Despite track-by-track production, Frøkedal’s lyrical output has taken a much more thematic approach with recent single ’Stranger’, and the double single released today: “When I started writing this new material, I was picturing different ages or stages in our lives when our vision gets a little blurred. I wanted the songs (and the characters) to channel these critical moments when decisions are dominated by emotion and not necessarily by logic,” she says.
‘LTF’ and ‘Cracks' join Frøkedal’s already-impressive body of work, having previously collaborated with Robyn Hitchcock and fronted successful Norwegian outfit Harrys Gym. She remains a core member of I Was A King, who count Sufjan Stevens and Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake among past collaborators.

New album Epicycle will be released via figureight records this fall

The wonderful Epicycle by Iceland’s award-winning Gyda Valtysdóttir (of Múm) will finally be issued worldwide through figureight records this fall. Hear the first track from it today viaStereogum. The album collects Gyda’s new and unique visions of existing classical pieces, covering a range broad enough to include the great master Sergei Prokofiev, through to 20th century experimental music theorist Harry Partch, via the “Seikilos Epitaph” - the oldest known surviving musical composition in the world. Giving herself creative free-reign, Gyda - a classically trained and highly accomplished cellist - gave each piece a reimagined identity and sensibility, treating her arrangements not as new performances, but as “recloaked” arrangements.Gyda’s background comprises both indie music (she co-founded the hugely acclaimed múm in her teens) and classical (a student of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg, she holds a Double Masters in music), and these threads cohabit on Epicycle. A symbiosis of astute compositional mastery and innately approachable musicality, leading toEpicycle as a natural conclusion. The results here - assembled by Gyda and label-founder / close collaborator Shahzad Ismaily - run like a heavenly mixtape, tying together strings of history and geography into a single album. The timespan of these pieces covers 2,000 years; their homelands cross continents.Alongside Gyda’s cello, piano, voice and zither, the record features Ismaily’s guitar, synthesisers and percussion, and a handful of immensely talented further collaborators. But the focus is almost always on Gyda’s own instrumentation, from the sparse, swooping loneliness of her cello in ‘Ancient Mode’ (the Partch piece), to her lulling dreamlike voice in ‘Im Wunderschönen Monat Mai’ (Schumann).Epicycle was released initially (CD-only, Iceland-only) through Reykjavik label Smekkleysa, and received weighty prizes at the Icelandic Music Awards. This new issue - its first international and vinyl release - is released through figureight records. The label is led by Ismaily (Bonnie Prince Billy, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, Colin Stetson among many others) and label manager Hildur Maral (ex-Bedroom Community).

DIET CIG
SHARE MUSIC VIDEO FOR "HARVARD"
LIMITED EDITION OVER EASY EP 12" VINYL AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 8
ON TOUR IN SEPTEMBER
Today, Diet Cig shared their new music video for "Harvard." The video was directed byEmily Dubin. The track is from their 2015 EP Over Easy, which is available now via Father/Daughter. A limited edition Fried Egg 12" Vinyl will be available on September 8th. Pre-order the vinyl here.
Watch "Harvard" HERE
The band is heading out on a US and European tour beginning September 7th with a headlining show at New York City's Bowery Ballroom on September 8th. All tour dates below.
Diet Cig took their infectious and energetic show to the Washington, DC offices of NPR for a Tiny Desk Session. The band played 3 tracks -- "Sixteen" and "Tummy Ache" off their debut album Swear I'm Good At This and "Harvard." It's no wonder that in June, when NPR asked their listeners who their favorite new artist of the year was (so far), thenumber 1 answer was Diet Cig. NPR said, "the high-energy blast that musicians often reserve for their finale is the starting point for Diet Cig. The band's boundless, leaping pop is exhilarating and pleasantly exhausting to watch, with drummer Noah Bowman propelling the high kicks and constant pogo bounce of guitarist and singer Alex Luciano."
Diet Cig's Tiny Desk Session HERE
Since the release of Swear I'm Good At This Diet Cig - a duo of Alex Luciano (guitar and vocals) and Noah Bowman (drums) - have been playing to packed rooms across the US and Canada almost nightly. The album has garnered world-wide critical acclaim and it showcases Diet Cig's tenacity for crafting life-affirming, relatable tales with a gutsy heart at their core. Luciano has the ability to write lyrics that are both vulnerable and badass, perfecting a storm of emotive reflection that creates a vision of a sweaty, pumped-up room screaming these lines in unison. Diet Cig make it okay to be the hot mess that you are. The LP was produced, engineered and mixed by Christopher Daly at Salvation Recording Co. in New Paltz, NY with additional recording at Atomic Sound in New York City.
To date the band has released the singles "Barf Day," Tummy Ache" and "Link In Bio."

Praise for Diet Cig "Swear I'm Good At This all adds up to a snapshot of a young songwriter navigating through the yearning and boredom, ambition and insecurity that accumulates along the rocky path from adolescence to adulthood. The power of Diet Cig comes from the way Luciano and Bowman bolster these themes with affirming positivity in the form of delightful, explosive anthems." NPR
"Fantastic Fuzz-Pop Debut" -- Rolling Stone -- 4 stars!
"The best pop-punk uses sweetness as a decoy for angst, and Alex Luciano, the frontwoman of Diet Cig, has a piercingly saccharine voice that veers toward extreme sadness as she deploys it." - NY Times
"The delightfully titled 'Barf Day' (embodies) what makes the pair's upcoming debut Swear I'm Good At This so enthralling: the featherweight garage grit, Luciano's subversive sincerity, and bandmate Noah Bowman's fist-pumping percussion...Against all odds, Diet Cig are coming of age on their own terms."" - StereogumVocalist Alex Luciano brings a lighthearted innocence to ('Tummy Ache') singing criticisms of the patriarchy in the most charming way." Nylon
"Swear I'm Good at This, (is) one of the most refreshingly fun albums of the year." Noisey
"Diet Cig's debut album driven by Alex Luciano, is one of the most effeminate, flippant, giggly and cute albums of the year - and that's part of what makes it so f*cking good." Uproxx
"loud, blunt, and totally fun." Under The Radar
"(Diet Cig) make pop-punk that's simultaneously adorable and fierce...You can expect sing-along jawns that sound just as good at a sweaty Diet Cig show as they do when you're alone in your bedroom" NY Daily News, "9 Albums Dropping in April You'd Be Foolish Not to Check Out"
"Swear I'm Good At This, is charismatic, balancing rage and rebellion with poppy lightness...Luciano breathes life and space into these traditionally closed-off feelings, and her twee pop voice will have listeners tapping their feet and leaning in for more." Bust

"Diet Cig's music is playful, upbeat and addictive." Paste
"infectious indie-rock perfection" NY Newsday

Beach Slang Announces Quiet Slang Project + EP
BEACH SLANG ANNOUNCE QUIET SLANG EP
WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS
OUT OCTOBER 20TH ON POLYVINYL RECORDS
CELLO, PIANO AND VOICE. PLAYED SOFTLY.
LISTEN TO QUIET SLANG'S "BAD ART & WEIRDO IDEAS"
FULL LENGTH COMING IN 2018

Beach Slang may have started off their last album, A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings, with the lyrics, "play it loud, play it fast, play me something that will always last," and certainly lived by that ethos with their raucous live shows. But this fall, James Alex will debut his newest project, aptly titled Quiet Slang, with the We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags EP, where he plays solo with a contributing pianist and cellist.
The EP will include two Beach Slang songs, as well as, covers of The Replacements and Big Star (both covers being exclusive to this record). Pre-order the EP HERE. (see full tracklisting below). A cassette version of the EP will be available on Cassette Store Day this October 14th.

About Quiet Slang, Alex says, "I suppose we're all chasing something that resembles salvation, something that calms our bones. Maybe this is some small slice of that. Maybe it's not. Maybe it's chaos in soft clothes. Maybe it's frightened. Maybe it's fearless. Maybe it's both. Or maybe it's nothing. I don't know, but I think about this: one day I'm going to be dust. And when my soul splits, maybe this will be the thing that sneaks me through the gates. If not, well, those are the breaks."

Mascot Records are thrilled to announce the new album and first in six years from funk rock legendBootsy Collins! ‘World Wide Funk’ will be released on 27 October and features an array of phenomenal talent including; Chuck D, Buckethead, Eric Gales, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Musiq Soulchild, Bernie Worrell, Kali Uchis and many more. The funk runs deep and rich on World Wide Funk , Bootsy Collins' first studio album since 2011's Tha Funk Capital of the World . Populated with musical friends old and new, and recorded in his Cincinnati home's Bootzilla Re-hab studio, World Wide Funk marks both a reckoning and significant reboot for the Rhinestone Rock Star. Blue-chip rappers like Chuck D, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Quikand Dru Down, along with guitar shredder Buckethead, join a curated posse of fresh new artists on a record that embraces everything from the classic P-Funk sound that Bootsy pioneered.
Bootsy explains: "I wanted to create a mystical monster that was born between a ‘Pee-hole & a A**hole,’ which automatically smelled fishy and funked up!’ At the same time, it could fit into a radio station format with a little wiggle room. But then ‘Boot-Rapp-A-Fella’ showed up and said that it would be ludicrous to do this. The ‘One’ kindly gave me the Funk Finger and showed me this World Wide Funkateer Drive going on out here, and he said ‘all you have to do is un-dress it.’ So I waved my hands in the air and gave up the funk like I just didn’t care. Then out of the clear blue, my man Brother-Nature showed up to announce that This is the Year of the Funkateer! The Funkateers began chanting, ‘Come back Bootsy, Come back, Come back, Bootsy Come Back.’ Not only do I have bootz on the ground, we got troops getting down, drones in the air and these young disciples were hungry and not a one of them was scared. The vets of Hip-hop, a la cream of the crop, shouted out to retain their gold, made me feel real good once again to know that they still got soul.” Or as his longtime partner in funk George Clinton once put it: ‘Free your mind and your ass will follow!’
From the maximalist funk of the body-slamming title track, to the soulful pop-R&B of "Heaven Yes," to the experimental Groovegrass of Boomerang (featuring Nashville slide-guitar hero Justin Johnson), to when “mix master Chew Fu showed up and showed out with his DJ skills on Candy Coated Lover”, World Wide Funk is the latest chapter in Bootsy's life-long dedication to the One World Wide Funk is the latest chapter in Bootsy's life-long dedication to the One. The ineffable thing that made the funk emerged from the primordial ooze during teenaged William "Bootsy" Collins' watershed year (1970-71) with James Brown. Bootsy subsequently took the One to George Clinton's P-Funk crew – in what Brown biographer RJ Smith has called "one of history's biggest cases of industrial espionage" – where he adapted Brown's precision and rigor to ringleader Clinton's ecstatic, chaotic, and prolific musical playpen.
The Collins mythology created in this trippy trio of late-'70s R&B hits undergoes further development on World Wide Funk in tracks like Bass-Rigged System (with guest appearances by fellow bass legendsVictor Wooten, Stanley Clarke and Manou Gallo), Pusherman (wherein the Blvck Seeds collective offers a feminist take on the theory of evolution), and Come Back Bootsy , an epic funk extravaganza anchored once again by Bootsy's star-shaped Space Bass.
Along with X-Zact and Blvck Seeds, who supply gorgeous harmonies throughout World Wide Funk, other fresh faces on this casually collaborative effort include bassist-co-producer Alissia Benveniste and singer Tyshawn Colquitt. Bootsy discovered Benveniste (a Berklee School of Music graduate who leads a 15-piece band called the Funketeers) online. Kali Uchis is another fresh singer on tap that will “quench your thirst for the funk.” Cincinnati singer Tyshawn Colquitt sings his heart out on the soulful Snow Bunny.
Other ‘World Wide Funk’ guests include rappers Dru Down, DJ-Quik and MC Eiht, along with singersMusiq Soulchild and October London. London adds feminine appeal alongside a shoe-infatuatedBootsy on Hi-On-Heels , a slow-groove collaboration with Snoop Dogg. On the sexually gastronomic Hot Saucer , Musiq Soulchild announces his intention to "put it on your body like cheese on grits," withBig Daddy Kane adding, "I ain't dinin' you, I'm brinin' you!"
Funk wasn't always all about the bass, but Bootsy helped make it so. He's noted for rocking his custom-made star-shaped Space Bass like a lead guitar, both in the funk zone and alongside experimental producers like Bill Laswell. There's no lack of fiery instrumental magic on World Wide Funk either, not with shredding virtuosos like Eric Gales, the mysterious Buckethead and Joe Massonboard. “You can also hear Jabo and the late Clyde Stubblefield on the album as vocal guests,”Bootsy explains, “and former Prince drummer John Blackwell, along with Dennis Chambers, who left road kill up and down our mile long driveway.”
World Wide Funk also entails a call to activism – literally "Bootz on the ground, baby!" as the title track puts it. "The whole concept," Collins explains, "was not only about playing music or being current on this album, but about teaching people how to funk for themselves so they can bring some funk to get some. We bring them hope like dope, so not one Funkateer chokes. Unity in the community is a part of this plan and when the Mothership lands there’s nothing but helping hands. WWF-Drive is about propelling ourselves and generations to come into the future with the speed of light as in Flashlight.”
A longtime activist himself, Collins has long given back to his community through the Bootsy Collins Foundation (bootsycollinsfoundation.org). The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is overseen by Patti Collins, Bootsy'swife, and it focuses on raising the self-esteem of bullied girls, preventive dental care for underserved communities, and providing musical instruments to disadvantaged kids.
Bootsy's music and life are all about creating unity in the community, "but not necessarily the same old community." He has never stopped generating new energy among new musical associates, and World Wide Funk is the latest example of his Promethean powers. It blends classic Bootsy, Analog (“aka the veteran artist”), and Slingshots (“aka the youngins”) into the silly serious world of Bootsy, with results that will extend far beyond the confines of our galaxy.
"I've never really been concerned about what others thought about me or my music, as long as it made you feel good & sexy, like them old house parties, sharing a coke and a smile while doing a bump and grind,” Bootsy concludes. “I’ve had the privilege to travel back in time to imagine; what it was like, ‘When a Stage Coach was First Class!’ Bottom line is, ‘MAKE MY P-WHOLE AGAIN!’”
