UPCOMING
EXHIBITIONS & TALKS
FALL 2017Michelle Handelman, "Hustlers & Empires", 2018, 4k multichannel installation, color, sound, 63:00. Hi Everyone, I'm very excited to announce that the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has commissioned my new project HUSTLERS & EMPIRES as part of their Performance in Practice Series. It will premiere at SFMOMA in March 2018.

HUSTLERS & EMPIRES is a multichannel film installation with live performance that takes inspiration from Iceberg Slim's novel PIMP, Marguerite Duras' novel THE LOVER, and Federico Fellini's film TOBY DAMMIT. It looks at transgression as a mode of survival and examines how the hustler survives despite all odds.  It stars the amazing performers  SHANNON FUNCHESS,  JOHN KELLY,  and VIVA RUIZ who each write and perform original songs for the piece.

There's a lot of collaborators on this project including cinematography by Ed David; costumes by Karen Young and Neon Music; set design by And or Forever; original music by the performers and additional music by Jonathan Kreinik. I'll be sending more images and updates in the coming weeks.

I'm in San Francisco this week presenting a talk at the San Francisco Art Institute with SFMOMA curator Frank Smigiel.  THIS WEEK Tues Nov 7, 7:00-9:00p at San Francisco Art Institute.

Michelle Handelman: Hustlers & Empires | November 7
Graduate Lecture Series co-presentation with SFMOMA

Michelle Handelman's presentation phantasmagoric video installations create hypnotic and complex spaces of ever-shifting queer identities. Blurring the line between performance and reality, she re-contextualizing historical figures in cinema and literature by casting subcultural icons who play versions of themselves within a cinematic framework. Exploring philosophical questions of existence, she confronts the things we collectively fear and deny—sexuality, death, chaos. Handelman will introduce her project Hustlers & Empires, a SFMOMA co-commission and her project Irma Vep, The Last Breath (2013/15) starring Zackary Drucker and Flawless Sabrina.

Michelle Handelman is a Guggenheim Fellow who has exhibited at Broad Art Museum; MIT List Visual Arts Center; Participant, Inc, NYC; PERFORMA Biennial; The Henry Art Gallery; Guangzhou 53 Art Museum; and REDCAT. During the 1990s, Handelman was based in SF where she collaborated with Monte Cazazza, a pioneer of the Industrial music scene; directed the feature doc BloodSisters (1996), and performed in several films by Lynn Hershman-Leeson. Her work is in many collections including Kadist Art Foundation; di Rosa Foundation and Preserve; Zabludowicz Art Trust. She’s an Associate Professor in the Film, Media and Performing Arts department at Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

The Devil Makes Three Announces 2018 North American Tour

THE DEVIL MAKES THREE ANNOUNCES EXTENSIVE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR FOR 2018 REDEMPTION & RUIN OUT NOW VIA NEW WEST RECORDS Photo credit: Giles Clement The Devil Makes Three has announced an extensive North American tour for 2018 with tickets going on sale this Friday, November 10, HERE. The 23-show run will kick-off in Madison, WI on January 10 and hit major cities throughout Canada and the American Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast, ending in Dallas, TX on February 10. Last year, the internationally beloved, Americana trio released Redemption & Ruin on New West Records to critical acclaim. The album is a thoughtfully curated collection of covers that pays tribute to its versatile genre's staple players and the band's most penetrative influences. Divided into two sides, the subjects of "redemption" and "ruin" are explored through various songs written by blues, roots, and rock legends like Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt and more. On the album, the band is also joined by an all-star cast of special guests like Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brien, Jerry Douglas, Darrell Scott and guitar great Duane Eddy. The archival piece is tightly wound together by The Devil Makes Three's rigorous energy and masterful musicianship, both of which shine through their live set. Please see below for full tour details, which includes the band’s current U.S. run that ends with two shows in Denver, CO on November 18 & 19.
American Songwriter calls Redemption & Ruin “a wonderfully successful foray that solidifies and expands the band’s already impressive credentials around a concept that’s a natural extension from their existing catalog of originals.” Additionally, Entertainment Weekly premiered the band’s interpretation of “Champagne and Reefer,” originally written and recorded by Chicago blues legend Muddy Waters, noting, “California trio The Devil Makes Three have served up their singularly spooky blend of blues, folk, and rockabilly for the past decade and a half.” Watch the video for the song HERE. While Redemption & Ruin brings listeners directly to the source point of the band’s inspiration, original songwriting and a zeal for early Americana is what helped propel The Devil Makes Three through celebrated gigs big and small, including appearances at an array of festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Hangout Fest, Shaky Knees, and Bonnaroo. Through multiple acclaimed albums featuring infectious songs like “Old Number Seven” and “Graveyard,” they have assembled a coalition of indie rock and folk music fans; and their punk spirit, along with some Santa Cruz history, has long pervaded their proudly raw presentation. That ethos helped the band connect with Nashville mastermind Buddy Miller for their 2013 project I’m A Stranger Here, which the Boston Globe praised for “a loose-limbed vibrancy that mimics the intensity of their live shows.” The Devil Makes Three comprises Pete Bernhard, Cooper McBean, and Lucia Turino. The trio has been playing stomping folk for nearly 15 years and long before it started trending. As early roots influence in America grows, we can count on them not to sanitize its source material, or purge the suffering or the deviance or the repentance, from the stories they sing. “That’s what we think the best stuff is,” Pete says. “And it belongs there. To take it out is to destroy it.” THE DEVIL MAKES THREE ON TOUR:

Exploded View streams "Summer Came Early" EP in full, out 11/10 on Sacred Bones

EXPLODED VIEW STREAMS SUMMER CAME EARLY EP IN FULL
VIA  THE A.V. CLUB
OUT THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10 ON SACRED BONES RECORDS
PRE-ORDER  HERE                                                                                                                                      Photo courtesy of Andrea Martin
“The summer sun came early that year … but we didn’t question a thing.”

Exploded View is: Annika HendersonMartin ThulinHugo Quezada and Amon Melgarejo.

After finishing the songs that became their self-titled debut LP for Sacred Bones, Exploded View decided to go back into the studio and record some more. Mixed in with some of the outtakes of the first record, such as “Mirror of the Madman,” the songs on  Summer Came Early  signal a step forward for the band, revealing more clarity and focus than the first, yet retaining a certain messy experimentalism that gives them the freedom they crave.

The psychotic tale of 'Mirror of the Madman' contrasts with the softness of 'Summer Came Early,' an epitaph to the environment, written in a post-warming future. “Forever Free” captures a “baroque” approach, with a curious combination of sounds: the fake harpsichord synth sound and the mellotron, plus the "bleeping sound" sequence caused by Hugo Quezada’s personal obsession with Raymond Scott. The track is a tale of mental entrapment and finding the key to freedom from within.

The final song, “You Got A Problem Son,” almost went undiscovered. It could have easily been buried and forgotten eternally, had it not been found by Quezada and Martin Thulin while listening through the 8-track tapes for something else. The lead sound was made with a four-oscillator synth, with the four oscillators slightly out of tune with one another; a nice metaphor for the band perhaps, ending the trip with a disjointed rush; a mod-tale, begging for repeated listening.

The record is out this Friday, Nov. 11th but you can stream the EP in its entirety right now, find the links below!

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE 2018 VILLAINS NORTH AMERICA TOUR EXPANDED BY POPULAR DEMAND

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE2018 VILLAINS NORTH AMERICA TOUR EXPANDED BY POPULAR DEMANDTICKETS ON SALE NOVEMBER 10 AT 10AM LOCAL TIME *Support Acts Including Royal Blood, Eagles of Death Metal, Ty Segall, Wolf AlicePhoto: Andreas NeumannOn the tails of completing the most successful North American run of their storied career, Queens of the Stone Age have confirmed a second Stateside installment of the 2018 Villains World Tour. The new dates will begin with a March 21 and 22, 2018 two night stand in San Diego, and run through the end of May, including an April 24 appearance at the Austin 360 Amphitheater—the first QOTSA Austin headline show since 2011 and first time in the area since Austin City Limits 2013. The expanded Villains 2018 campaign will also feature stops in New Orleans, Miami and additional dates in Canada where Villains lead single “The Way You Used To Do” has reigned steadily atop the Alternative, Modern Rock and CAR radio charts.Tickets go on sale Friday, November 10 at 10am local time (*with the exception of Austin which will be on sale Friday, November 17 at 10am local time).Support acts on the new headline dates include Royal Blood (May 17-25) and Wolf Alice (April 24-May 2), with Eagles of Death Metal added to the recently announced January 22-30 run, and Ty Segall as special guest February 1 in San Francisco. See the itinerary below for full details. The 2017 Villains Tour reaffirmed Queens of the Stone Age’s interminable prowess as live performers, culminating in an electrifying two-hour, 20-song, career-spanning set at New York’s hallowed Madison Square Garden – their first time headlining that stage – which garnered some of the most enthusiastic reviews the Queens have ever seen:“On stage at MSG, where countless others have played rock shows before, Queens of the Stone Age come across as refreshing originals… massive and cool at the same time. It’s a hard rope to walk and one Queens of the Stone Age excels at.” – CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND“The seasoned rockers were on fire, leaving no doubts as to why they were born to play huge shows at high volumes. In the chaos of fast strobes, smoke machines, and saturated lights, QOTSA were rock solid and dominant, almost daring the effects to overshadow their all-encompassing sound (an impossible feat).” – PANCAKES AND WHISKEYOther markets were just as blown away, with Port Chester, Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Salt Lake City, Denver, St. Louis, Kansas City, St. Paul, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indianapolis, D.C., Boston, and Portland, ME selling out, leaving in their wake tens of thousands of satisfied fans and dozens of ecstatic reviewers:“Queens of the Stone Age plays music that sounds like grunge and nü-metal never happened, and the sleazy, strip-club glam of 1980s hair metal was allowed to grow and mutate in new ways over the decades….Adding these elements together, they then pummel you with sheer volume. The music was muscular, sexy and loud, and the audience was even louder.”—PORTLAND PRESS HERALD“A thing of beauty… a wonderfully ugly, gnarly, twisted batch of songs that offered equal parts release and rejoicing for the sold-out, cramped-but-lively crowd”—MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE“[QOTSA] turned in a tight, muscular set with the black-clad quintet in ferocious lockstep amidst a stage full of slalom-like light poles… the show focused on Queens’ latest album “Villains,” whose melodic anthem “Fortress” was the best performance of the night, but the group sampled enough older favorites… to acknowledge the long-time fans in the sold-out crowd.” – THE OAKLAND PRESSProduced by Mark Ronson and Queens Of The Stone Age, Villains was released August 25 on Matador Records. The album debuted at #1 in the UK, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland and Portugal, #2 in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Norway and Ireland, #3 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the U.S. album chart, #4 on Japan’s international chart and #5 in Italy—easily the single biggest global sales week of the Queens’ seven album stretch. Villains’ first seven days in existence also saw nearly 100,000 vinyl albums moved worldwide, as the record became the #1 selling vinyl LP in the UK, U.S. and Germany. Villains also took the U.S. #1 spots on the Alternative, Hard, Rock, Internet and Independent Label Album charts and #2 on the Digital Album sales chart.Queens Of The Stone Age are Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Michael Shuman and Jon Theodore. For further information, visit http://www.qotsa.comQUEENS OF THE STONE AGE: VILLAINS NORTH AMERICAN TOUR 2018

Watch Circuit des Yeux's "Brainshift" on NPR!

SHIFTING THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE WATCH "BRAINSHIFT" HERE Brainshift - came like a tidal wave. Closest to the sun you've been - a thousand miles away. There you'll see the clouds and call out the rain. The world wants an oath, but all you can say is: "I promise to take up space. I can only promise to take up space."
The imperceptible shifts of being are illuminated, elevated and celebrated onCircuit des Yeux's shattering new album Reaching For Indigo. As the first sounds and words you hear, "Brainshift" causes the floor to drop from beneath you, as you travel deep within Haley Fohr's psyche. This is a trip she takes every day, but one that makes for breathless listening for the rest of us.Haley's unflinching power and volitant lyric croon spiral we the listener through layers of intimacy and diffraction, sophisticated, yet hauntingly raw.
The video, directed by brownshoesonly, pursues the piercing minimalist ethos of the song itself, as Haley becomes one with the waves of sound, achieving the wholeness of Circuit des Yeux by simply being.
Enjoy the new video for "Brainshift" on NPR. Should this all-too-brief visitation not be enough for you, in just a few short weeks, Circuit des Yeux is bringing music to select cities in the Midwest and East Coast.
