Barbara Dane Retrospective Album Out Feb. 16 on Smithsonian Folkways

Barbara Dane Retrospective Album Out Feb. 16 on Smithsonian FolkwaysALBUM WILL FEATURE 14 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS FROM THE ICONIC SINGER AND ACTIVIST
On Feb. 16, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings will release 'Barbara Dane: 60 Years of Hot Jazz, Cool Blues and Hard-Hitting Songs.' The 2-disc retrospective honors the electric folk, blues and jazz history of one of the unsung champions of American music. This career-spanning album, which begins with Dane's first recordings in 1957, offers unparalleled insight into the living legend Bonnie Raitt calls a role model and a hero. Dane's unwillingness to make artistic compromises led her to become an outspoken ally of the labor movement, civil rights and underdogs everywhere.Praised as the "People's Singer," Dane has long been "a versatile voice with a political purpose" (NPR). From her early Detroit days, where singing on labor issues was her focus, to singing about historic events like the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement and documenting the music of the 1970s resistance movements; Dane has forged her own path, continually expanding the scope of her musical life. She became the first white woman to grace the cover of Ebony Magazine and founded groundbreaking Paredon Records (now part of the Smithsonian Folkways collection) with longtime partner Irwin Silber. She will croon in her "pure, rich voice" (TIME) across this 39-track collection featuring 14 never-before-released recordings with greats like Lightnin' Hopkins, the Chambers Brothers, Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon and more. Created in collaboration with the Barbara Dane Legacy Project, this album celebrates her 90th birthday and perfectly demonstrates how her fierce independence and willingness to sing of moments of abandonment, injustice and joy are why she has remained a "symbol of resistance" even in the 21st century. This album will be released alongside a special vinyl reissue of 'Barbara Dane and the Chambers Brothers.'"I've never recognized borders," says Barbara herself in the intro letter to the project. "I hope my abiding love for the benighted country is apparent, along with my steadfast support of the people who suffer and struggle every day to keep it going. I hope you notice that it is possible to speak your mind to the world and still survive."This celebration of Barbara Dane is just one of the many exciting albums Smithsonian Folkways is releasing in celebration of its 70th anniversary. Smithsonian Folkways is dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among people through sharing music, spoken word and sound around the world.'Barbara Dane: 60 Years of Hot Jazz, Cool Blues and Hard-Hitting Songs' Track List:

Grant Hart returns to Yanomamos for "Comes Alive!"

Husker Du's Grant Hart returns to drums with the reunion of Yanomamos
"Comes Alive!" hits record stores 29 years after their first release, "Quizas" (pronounced, Kiss-Ass) in 1988 on New Alliance records Yanomamos is performance artist Miss Jane Mansfield on bass, Timothy G. Piotrowski on guitar and vocals, with Grant Hart on drums. The three became a tribe adopting their name from the indigenous people of the tropical rain forest in Southern Venezuela and Northern Brazil that were known to be wild, untameable and a force to be reckoned with.
Grant shared a quality with Marcel Duchamp of pursuing an endless quest in pushing the boundaries of creativity. The jammed out psychedelic improvisations of Yanomamos rhythms, riff damage, peaks and valleys galore lac
Tim and Jane's early 80's band Duck Kicking Vulture caught the attention of Grant. In 1987 he offered the band 12 hours of recording time and 12 hours to mix. The deal was made just before Husker Du's break up, then everything fell apart.
Yanomamos came together spontaneously in the summer of 1988 when Grant invited them to Creation studio where he was working on Intolerance. The session was recorded on a boom box and released as Quizas. This was the first post-Husker Du project to hit vinyl from any of its members. At that time the band played a handful of shows, including their infamous "Fire Show" in First Avenue's main room. You can watch a promo clip from the show at www.yanomamos.com
The groups second "Fire Show", also in the main room was a 2011 benefit for Hart after a fire destroyed his South Saint Paul family home. Yanomamos returned to the studio in 2015 recording side one of Comes Alive! as an EP that was never released. In 2017 after Hart's diagnosis with cancer, Yanomamos returned to the studio to turn the EP into an LP. It was one of his favorites projects. The test pressings arrived on the night of his passing. Order the album HERE.

Al Jourgensen Talks About the Song "Antifa"

MINISTRY'S AL JOURGENSENDECONSTRUCTS THE SONG "ANTIFA"FROM THE BAND'S UPCOMING ALBUM AMERIKKKANT  "I do believe that people should stand up for themselves and not be party to this bullshit we've being fed...I think Antifa is a state of mind, it's like, 'we're not going to take this shit anymore, because we've been sold a bad bill of goods here by you people'...I relish the attitude of Antifa...I think that some of the tactics they take actually hurt the cause or the thought process more than it helps, but I do enjoy the "enough!" aspect of it, and that's what this song is about."  -- Al Jourgensen

SEND FANS A HOLIDAY GREETING WATCH "ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS (IS A TASCAM 388)" FROM THEIR LATEST ALBUM  The Weather
ADDITIONAL  U.S. TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

POND are sharing a holiday greeting with this fun video for "All I Want For Christmas (Is a Tascam 388)" from their newest album, The Weather. The video features band member "Shiny Joe Ryan" in a Santa suit and tinseled glory. It was directed by fellow member Jamie Terry and shot in their home town of Fremantle, Western Australia.
POND will also be returning to the U.S. in January for their first North American tour in over 6 months. Highlights include Warsaw in Brooklyn on January 11th and a return to Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles on January 24th. Due to high demand, the band is pleased to announce a second Los Angeles show at Zebulon on January 25th. The Nashville show at the High Watt on January 16th has also sold out and will be moved to Mercy Lounge with more tickets being released. Tickets for the U.S. tour are on sale now. The New York based Australian artist and POND label-mate, Fascinatorwill open all dates.
The Weather was released earlier this year. Produced by Tame Impala's Kevin Parker-- it captures POND at their finest. Fresh psych-rock soundscapes envelope tales that manage to be sober, surreal, intimate, and out of this world all at the same time. At once both obsessed with today's tumultuous global attitudes ("30000 Megatons") and as detached from them as humanly possible ("Paint Me Silver"),The Weather provides ideal terrain for both engagement and escapism.

THE SHINS TO RELEASE THE WORM’S HEART ON JANUARY 19, AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER FRIDAY, 12/15

THE SHINS TO RELEASE THE WORM’S HEART ON JANUARY 19, AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER FRIDAY, 12/15

EXTENSIVE WORLD TOUR CONCLUDED THIS WEEK IN HONOLULUThe Shins will release  The Worm’s Heart , a complete rework of their 2017 acclaimed album  Heartworms , on Friday, January 19. The announcement was made today by James Mercer via Facebook Live, check it out hereThe Worm’s Heart will be available for pre-order Friday, 12/15 and includes immediate downloads of "Name For You (Flipped)" and "Cherry Hearts (Flipped)" which were released earlier this year. When James Mercer wrote, produced, and recorded  Heartworms , he had this desire for an alternate version, an opposite version. The album’s slow songs would be flipped and re-recorded as fast songs, and vice versa. The reasoning was to showcase the versatility and strength of his songwriting, the result is  The Worm’s Heart .

The Shins concluded their extensive world tour Tuesday night in Honolulu, HI. Since March, the band has played over 100 shows. For more information on The Shins, visithttps://theshins.com/.
