Just wanted to remind myself what an actual good PI looks like after reading ‘the last smile in Sunder City’ because he was rubbish! I fricking love Elvis, he’s just the best. This is a good one, I had forgotten most of the actual case. It gets very tricky with all the players involved, the US marshals, Russians and Vietnamese. Cole reminds me of John from POI, he just loves his numbers so much. A good reread

seconds and animal creatures getting all deformed. It was just really upsetting to read. And the main character was kinda awful, like I got why he was the way he was but it’s really hard to like a character who everyone despises, including himself. Also he did very very little actual investigative work, I feel like he just stumbled drunkenly around town getting his ass kicked for days until luckily he just stumbled

This was alright. If I had to sum it up in one word I think I’d go with, bleak. The set up sounded cool, a PI in a fantasy world, very fun. And the little snippet made me think it’d be a bit quippy and fun. It was not, it was very depressing. The fantasy world without magic was just very sad. Basically all the magical creatures got fucked up when the magic left, like the elves and vampires aging centuries in

to address it because all of her ptsd and drug addiction just clears itself up with a little murder and a move to Cambridge, no therapy needed apparently. Ugh this was such an utter disappointment. Honestly it feels like it was written by a different person. Note to self only reread the first one. This series definitely peaked there for me. #not my Ravi and Pip

incompetent. She then cut ties with everyone for nearly 2 years! Which honestly I think would make me more suspicious if I were the police, for this chick to just cut and run right after this murder. And all we get as an epilogue is a text from Ravi being like “hey sarge, remember me?” after the trial. And I’m like have some self respect man and move on! This chick has so much baggage and apparently no desire

have been really interesting but this was just done in just a weird way that I was just deeply uncomfortable and honestly ended up hating pip a little and feeling a bit bad for the guy they framed which I didn’t think possible considering how awful he was. And she got away with it! Honestly she was so sketchy during the interviews that I feel like she only got away with it because the police in this town are

the guy!! Also it did not feel like self defence at all it was 100% a choice. And then she decides to frame the rapist guy for the murder! What the actual fuck!
And not only that but we get the whole gang back together, you know so that everyone can be an accessory to murder should it all go to shit. And everyone seems completely fine with it?! I feel like the storyline of taking justice into your own hands could

little misunderstood girl and I’m like yeah maybe she had some stuff going on but she was still an awful awful person!
The big twist in the middle was absolutely ludicrous! They not only jumped the shark, they reversed back, set it on fire and had another crack! What the hell! Pip got kidnapped by the most cartoonish bad guy who’s been right under our noses the whole time only to escape and then straight up kill

weirdly well adjusted?! Bad shit happened to him too.
It picked up a little with the creepy stalker but pip still annoyed me with how blasé she was about it all. And her not guessing who the DT Killer was felt really dumb. I thought for a bit there that it was cool how it related back to the first book and the Andie Bell case, it all being connected. But then they Sossa historied Andie actually just being a poor

I feel like she just came across as a completely different character to the first one. And her constantly shutting everyone out, and being a fricking drug addict was so unbelievably frustrating. I feel like for the first chunk of this book Ravi would just randomly pop in and out to be the token boyfriend, I kinda feel like he became a caricature of himself just there to be the sidekick to pip. Also why is he so

I had a few false starts at this and honestly I just wish I hadn’t bothered. What an absolute piece of garbage, it ruined everything, for me to still enjoy this series this book no longer exists to me.
The start was pretty slow and kinda depressing. Pip has more ptsd than you can poke a stick at which is 100% understandable given everything she’s been through but it’s not fun to read about.

I liked that the monsters had adapted to modern life, like the fear eaters running a cinema for horror movies and the banshees feeding off the sorrow at hospices. The characters were all interesting too, I liked them all and enjoyed the interactions and relationships between them. Dymitr was a badass! A fun quick read.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. I think that maybe Veronica Roth should just write novellas from now on because it gave her enough time to set up a great fantasy setting but ended before she had a chance to ruin it by undoing all her world building like she usually does. I thought the Polish folklore and Slavic mythology was really cool, different to lots of other fantasy I’ve read.

because they’re all a bit more broken in the present. I found the Prince in the past chapters really interesting because he was a mortal in a magic lineup but what made him so great was that he was an excellent leader who earned all their loyalty. It was really sad that Kai lost him though because you could tell he really loved him. Super keen to read more about these characters in the next one.

And I liked to that although he was a bit brooding and disheartened he was also still really kind and loving to his chosen family. His relationship with Ziede was really precious and maybe my favourite part of the whole book. I liked that it flicked between the past and the present so that we got to see how the characters all started and compare it to how they are now, always a little sad to do that too though

Sanja, and the earth witch familiar, Tenes. Felt like we didn’t learn as much about them as the other characters but I still liked the interactions we did see. The different types of magics were all very cool and it was cool how Kai could use a little of all of them. I thought he was a great character, I liked that he was obviously very powerful but a lot of his skill came from being able to plan on the fly.

I really really enjoyed this! I love Martha Wells writing so much, she just makes such great characters and such excellent world building too. I loved these characters, Kai was wonderful, I love my sad little demon bean. Ziede was very cool too, her air magic was very cool, how it was less air bending and more her summoning air spirits and wind devils to help her. I would have liked a little more of the little girl,
