Still having a blast with this. Again, it’s so cool seeing an “adult” rated First Doctor story that doesn’t ever break the tone or format OF a First Doctor Story. I feel like I should get more Stephen Cole books.

The way Cole is working the anachronism of One, Ben, and Polly hanging out with like hardened space marines is so fun.

Picked this back up after tonight’s tremendous episode. I wish more of a meal was made out of the Agatha Christie riff, but it’s still a very solid, very fun read.

Enter...YOUNG DUNCAN IDAHO! also why isn’t there a whole book about the Swordmasters of Ginaz? I would read the hell out of that.

Also forgot the ruler of IX cucks the Galactic Emperor. Good stuff there.

Reallt starting to cook now. I really enjoy how Cole sets up all the background about the setting and the war and then neatly doles our exposition from the soldiers. It’s nice and neat and good flavor for the story.

Yyeesahhhhhhh! Getting to IX! Also Young Leto is so clearly modeled on Paul it’s disgusting. He just gets like a summer abroad instead of instantly thrust into being the Duke.

I had totally forgotten that a young Kynes was one of the leads of this. All I remember is IX and the Scrappy Kid Origins OG Gurney Halleck.

It’s REALLY cracking now. It’s already mined so much greatness out of stodgy old First Doctor meeting SPACE MARINES. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Really starting to pick up now. I will say though, this thing is a bit, shall we say, more thematically mature than I was expecting from a First Doctor adventure.

Like a goddamn glove. I’m also so struck at how awesome of an adaptation the EXPANSE is because it retains like all the tension and construction of the set pieces PLUS the characters! It rules rules rules.

So apparently I started this like a while ago (probably when I got them two Christmases ago) so, after a very pitched game of eeney-meaney-miney-mo, I’m going to finish it! It’s going to be nice reading something just solely for pleasure again.

A few things this round. 1. Six using society and a random savings account he started in the 1800s as a weapon is very fun.
2. Peri is a canonical Republican which tracks if I’m honest.
3. Six is STILL out of costume. It’s hilarious

I sincerely love that there is just a whole damn pre-regeneration Second Doctor adventure smack in the middle of this thing.
