“Gag Halfrunt” is such a funny goddamn name.

It’s been neat to read this so close to listening to Big Finish’s THE OUTLAWS (which is also set in the early 13th century England)

The bit of the knight just being absolutely head over heels for Nyssa as soon as he sees her concurrently with all the Franciscans being like, “hey, this Doctor guy is fuckin’ WEIRD, right?” Is very entertaining. Four has so many straight men to play against. It’s really fun. On top of this just being an overall great hook for a historical.

I should have said ROGER Bacon before. Nyssa is obsessed with Roger Bacon because she’s writing a thesis on him (of course she is). but I had forgotten that this was basically a huge riff on The Name of the Rose/Cadfael. This has a lot of tonal similarities to Brothers Keepers too. I love that everyone keeps mistaking Nyssa for royalty and all the stuff about the TARDIS translating their speech as French & Latin

Since I’m out of the 50th reprints, I’ve decided to alternate between the Past Doctor Adventures and the Eighth Doctor Adventures. This one was next on the 8th Doc track. I already kinda love the fussiness of focusing only on this one weird system that’s got a fucked up sun and gravimetric orbit of its planets.

Really bold of this opening to go “okay, so, what if, and stay with me here, Nyssa’s life has been total crap since she left the TARDIS but she’s SUPER into Francis Bacon now?”

BUUUTT I truly do love the idea of early, super goofy Season 13-14 Fourth Doctor meeting Nyssa and having a side-adventure with her pre-her becoming an actual companion in Logopolis. Rules rules rules.

Two prologues is always a bold move.

I’m gearing up to review the BFP Lost Story of Return of the Cybermen so I picked this up! Fourth Doctor and Nyssa baybeeee! I’ve read this one before but it was back in high school.

Speaking of short story collections that don’t fuck about in the slightest, right off the bat.

It’s kinda astounding I never got to this one. I read the absolute hell out of the other ones, but weirdly never had full access to this one. Very happy to be correcting that now.
