Yeah. This is has all the hallmarks of a first novel. It's not horrible, but it either needed a lot more revision, or to viewed as a nice try, but not necessarily publishable.

Penny is pleasant enough, but apparently besieged by a case of too-stupid-to-live.

Okay. So now I'm only reading this to find out how A resolves his/her identity crisis. The love story has careens into creepy and I don't care about any of the characters. Also, thematically, the novel is a disorganized mess.

Again, engaging voice, but my spiteful side wants to DNF, because this is a case of a great premise pissed away in the name of an insipid teen romance. Annoyed.

I'm simultaneously engaged, and yet, there's a sense that the premise is hopelessly flawed.

Oh, boy, howdy, do I love a man with an enormous......brain. And mad problem solving skillz! Talk science to me, baby.

Mutiny. Mutiny's good.

Humor, people. Want to write a page-turner? Especially in a dry genre like hard SF. Humor is the key. This is all kinds of funny.

This full of nerdish, science-y goodness.

Anti-heroes! Slurp. Gimme summa dat.

A "preaching to the choir" kind of book. It's nice to have your views validated.

I need a hellhound. They're indestructible, and will never get cancer, die and break my heart in a million pieces. Also, they eat people. I'd train mine to eat anyone who came to my door selling vacuums or religion. Especially religion.

Lily is like the daughter I never had. I mean, if she were my kid, I'd have to make the usual Mom noises--"You're throwing your life away; go to school." But secretly, I'd think she was awesome.

Pseudo-beauty and the beast thing going on, but there plot lacks any tension or sense of urgency. Rather bland.

Too-Stupid-to-Live-Character stumbles from one near-death battlefield situation to another. And lives! The dude is like a cockroach. A whiny, drug-addicted cockroach.

"No question, the cacodemon was instantly the happiest being in the room." This sentence, with the delightful potential for carnage, made me smile. Too bad it didn't really pay off.

It's not bad; but it's not great either. And...interminably long.

I am briefly in love with Eliot, thanks to his mocking of Richard's stupid "beliefs." Love the taste of slayed sacred cow.

It would seem that "Harry Potter for adults" means "Harry Potter without the wonder or fun." Meh.

Recommended to me by a fellow extra on a film set. It is disliked, however, by most of my trusted reviewers here at GRs. Reading anyway because sometimes, I'm the statistical outlier.

And now Victoria, the fiancee, is added to the "evil females who hate Jessica" cast list. So lame. Only ready because curious about the twist at the 80% mark. May not make it though. The drama in this is strident.

The tree-puses are cute, but much of the narrative in this other world lacks tension or a sense of urgency.

Ghosteater is the best character in the book, but I dislike the narrative device where Beth's POV is sort of layered on top of his. Bizarre.

Stilted dialogue. Painfully contrived. Excessive angst. Why am I reading? Because the alternative--cutting metal with a plasma torch in 90-degree weather--is possibly worse. Possibly.

I don't trust Graham, but I don't like Kara, Williams or Callie, either. Especially Callie. God botherers are annoying.

In a reading slump. Casting about for something interesting.... Protagonist is okay but waaay too nice. I like her straight talking friend.

Cute. Unique setting (China). Would probably capture my attention more if my brain were in a different mode.

Stilted dialogue, especially from Jace, the hero. Sounds nothing like a teenage boy. Meh.

Started this, found it okay, but maybe "trying to hard." Protagonist's pain is understandable, but...then I started reading The Drowned Cities, and this didn't seem that compelling anymore. I'll get back to it...eventually.
