I think what I like most about this book is the equality of women. It is set in much the same sort of life as medieval times, but the author has chosen not to adopt all their customs to her world. That's fantastic, because the women hold their own. Finally!

Moving much faster now, and I can finally get a sense of why this series is so acclaimed. There is a heart to each of the characters; they aren't empty shells or one dimensional like those in Game of Thrones. And the story draws you in considerably.

I assume it only gets better, but it's pretty good right now.

Waited for ages to get hold of this series, after reading rave reviews. Then waited to wade through some serious reading to treat myself to this.

It turns out to be kinda depressing. Sigh. I only hope it cheers up a bit.

Reading this at a glacially slow pace. Just one of those books.

Not a book I can zip through, but not uninteresting either. Each chapter is vastly different from the next.

Constantly have to revise my expectations of this book. I thought it would be full of lyrical prose, without much science, but I was wrong there too. I've reached the third tree (sabal palm) and am totally hooked to the process of loggerhead turtle conservation!

I was expecting something more science-y; this book is lyrical, almost poetic. The author uses more adjectives than Shakespeare. Not a criticism however; I quite like it. Just had to shift my expectations somewhat.

I am reading through this every chance I get. It is insane and addictive, and only sheer willpower is stopping me from reading the ending.

Riveting! The shifting timelines confused me slightly, because I tend to ignore those cues [because I can't remember them]. But now that I have those straight, the shifting truth is harder to pin down.

Feel sorry for and frustrated with Rachel. Sigh.

Two thirds in, and can't get a feel for the story or characters. Salma is supposed to be adjusting to her life, but she is so fractured. Can't empathise at all.

Finally starting to get a grip on the flipflopping timelines. Sometimes pronouns don't match the subjects, and there are still paragraphs in the middle that are utterly mystifying.

Feel guilty about being so hard on the book. It has a lot of sensory description, too much one can argue, but it isn't all bad. The shifting thought-like narrative is disconcerting though.

OK, maybe I am a little disgruntled by the last few duds I have read but this is too much for a first paragraph on the first page:

- white sheep
- green hills
- whiteness of the sheep
- greenness of the hills
- greyness of the skies
- silver-green olive groves
- black and brown goats

Sigh.

Robin Varghese isn't a dork, he is a scumbag. Rooting for this character (the protagonist!) to fail spectacularly. Hmpf.

I needed a palate cleanser after Murakami, but this is ridiculously low-brow. And I already have the sequel, so I guess I'm stuck reading the trilogy.
