I didn't know Sidin was a Malayali when I started this book. 2 pages in, and I knew. I can almost hear the accent off the pages.

I think the common theme in these short stories is that the protagonist stays at home, while their spouse works. Eureka moment. #selfpat

Only Murakami can break an 8-page short story into 4 parts, each with an individual title that has no perceptible connection to the story.

Name of story: The Fall of the Roman Empire, The 1881 Indian Uprising, Hitler's Invasion of Poland, and The Realm of Raging Wind.

What. The. Heck.

Why am I torturing myself with this man's work? I like neatly tied up endings and clearly understandable stories. Murakami has neither. 😑

Had to break because of work, and now too sleepy to continue. Great.

Been reading this since yesterday. Unputdownable, except for essential things like eating and household work. But now I need a breather. Whew.

Turns out that, even when I have to read a single page about coding in an otherwise fantastic novel, my eyes will glaze over. And people ask me why I decided not to pursue IT. 😜

Unbelievably funny, and yet thrilling. Quite a feat!

Read the last 50 pages or so fairly quickly. New information coming through, and the format of the book has become more familiar.

There is so much self-justifying pomposity put into the mouths of the British characters, it makes me laugh quite a bit. I think it very much because of the resentment that every desi harbours for being occupied for so long.

Eg: ".. the gift of liberty that the British Empire has already conferred on all those parts of the globe that it has conquered and subjugated."

I really hope this book takes up the characters from the first in the trilogy. Looks promising so far.

Neel Rattan is a boring character, and really could do without his diary entries. Otherwise, the book is a riveting conclusion to this fabulous saga.

Love the Hindi words generously peppered throughout the narrative. Wonder what non-Hindi speakers make of them though.

Finally found out this heinous lie that Tracey told the narrator that irreparably impacted her relationship with her father. After all that build up, it was underwhelming to say the least.

Only now am I starting to find this book interesting. The long form style of prose has stopped exercising a soporific effect. Whew.

I just realised why this book is slow going: it is because there are pages and pages of description, unleavened by dialogue. In itself, that's not a bad thing, but in this case, the narrator is heavy-handed with her observations. In short, boring.

"thickened rice pudding, bristling with almonds"

Somewhat disappointed with the depth of punctuation rules discussed here. I am aware it is meant to be a fun book, but it lacks real information breadth.

Also, in the dashes section: the difference between the m-dash and n-dash aren't even hinted at! 😱

A real hoot! 😁
