Sad, funny, uncomplicated mysteries. I'm surprised they aren't more popular.

Very interesting and very well written adventure-mystery in the India of 1837. Very well drawn characters and all the historical figures sound true. Specially loved Mrs Parker who was a woman able to mix with the women of the zenanas and wrote about her life in India. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

The heat was oppressive and we passed thicket upon thicket in which the trees had been encircled by other sinisterly twisting grey trunks.
‘It is as if one tree would squeeze the life out of another, and then another, and then another,’ I said aloud. ‘What are they?’
‘They are called strangler vines,’ said Blake.

"My attention was drawn to the centre of the party where, surrounded by every marriageable man in Calcutta, the unattached young ladies recently off the boat from England were to be found – along, naturally, with their chaperones. Wits called them the fishing fleet because they had come out to catch a husband. Peering into the midst of them, I began to search for signs of She."
This is good...

There has been a murder and the Carabinieri go door to door talking to the neighbors. All those different domestic scenes were priceless. I like this... One more series for the wishlist ::sigh::

This book has the visual quality of an excellent graphic novel but without the illustrations. And the ending was so unexpected. I love this.

"All the little gods of irony must whoop and weep and roll on the floors of Olympus when they tune in on the night thoughts of a truly fatuous male.
And I hold several international records."

This book feels as if the author has taken a set of actors from the Sheridan-Lowell books and given them all new roles. So odd. And it was sooooo veeeryyy sloooooow that I kept falling asleep. So my neck hurts and I get cranky and I start loosing little stars through the cracks of the sofa.

Another plate was piled with brown-coloured eggs. Aunt Teng provided further illumination. ‘We call one thousand year eggs,’ she said. ‘But they not really a thousand year old. They soaked in horse urine for effect.’

While the mystery was fine and I've enjoyed the humorous bits I'm a little annoyed by some basic mistakes that don't make much sense. For instance: The guy is shot in the ribs. Still, his shirt and coat can be fixed with a brush. (???) And all the useless driving around...

I'm not too happy with how the story is planned. They go to Paris to talk to someone, get an address and then they go back home and forget about the address till the next day so they have to drive back to Paris. (??)
Or they drive from a to b then walk from b to c and drive back from c to b (!!) So odd...

Cinder is a cyborg so she couldn't merely lose a shoe right? lol
This is simply brilliant. Love the characters, love that the first stepsister is actually nice and warm while the stepmother is the traditional malicious and selfish person. And I want an android like Iko. Please somebody go and invent her :D
It deserves the 5 stars but I'm taking one off because it ends in a clifhanger. One more scene...
