I love this series. And I wanted to like the new book. But...
-I guess I've been reading too many thrillers lately cause I found it quite slow.
-One or 2 editing decisions really annoyed me. Nothing wrong with cutting to a new chapter in the middle of a scene I guess but I find it soapish.
-I preferred the banter between Hester and Gideon in the other books instead of this endless I love him-does he love me?.. 3.5

Margaret turned to find Mendez standing looking at a flag mounted inside a glass case on the wall. It had green, white and red vertical stripes with the date 1824 crudely scrawled on the central white band. The bottom left of the band was defaced by a single bullet hole. ‘You know what this is, my dear?’ he said. ‘It’s the flag that was flying over the Alamo when John Wayne and Richard Widmark got killed.’

I stop and button up the top of her coat. Spidery wrinkles radiate from her lips but her eyes haven't aged. From a distance we are mother and son sharing an intimate moment. Up close we are a stuttering monosyllabic tragicomedy played out over fifty years.

“Isn't there something you can tell me; something I should be doing?”
He looks at me quizzically. “You want some advice?”
“Yes.”
“Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.”
Then he's gone.

Ten men attacking on the road, spears at the ready, you screaming for mercy—’
‘Four men,’ Aline said. ‘Don’t lie: it was four men.’
Brasti looked down at her. ‘Little girl, you really don’t know anything about how to tell a story, do you?

The author's somehow dry style fits Erlendur's character but not the rest of them. You take Erlendur out of the picture and all the rest are people that I dislike. And I don't enjoy seeing them at the front of the play. Erlendur where are you?

I'm not giving it 5 stars because the last scene was too melodramatic.
But this is a great series of thrillers set in Scotland in 1947. The kind that keep you glued to the pages. And with humor. I really hope this is not the last book in this series.

Washtub, he thought to himself, finding a heavy wooden door that did open, you fantasize too much. It will make you dream. Dreams will turn to hopes. Hopes will turn to longing. Longing will turn to despair. Despair will turn to laughter. And laughter will get you in trouble.

As I lay down my pen and take to my bed, I am aware of the bow being drawn across the bridge and the music rises into the night sky. It is far away and barely audible but – there it is! A pizzicato. Then a tremolo. The style is unmistakable. It is Sherlock Holmes who is playing. It must be. I hope with all my heart that he is playing for me …
