Finally, a novel about Vietnam Nam. I love the strange characters and the proverbs. “One nite when starving equals a bundle when full.” “Don’t eat porridge, then piss in the bowl.” Now I wonder what Vietnamese immigrants would think of this?

An unexpected but delightful story, even though it’s about the suicide of Leigh’s mother. The obscure names of colors and the many examples of Mandarin add to the narrative.

The narrator is poor, but the information is good.

Oh, the names of new colors and a vivid red-feathered bird made the start of this book very engaging. Can’t wait to read more tonight.

Wonderful story - another aspect of WWII! Pigeons!

In the vein of a young woman’s frantic thoughts on paper, Rory is described as “relentless.” The book is interesting and the teen attitude is so vivid. Mystery underneath the personalities.

Just scanning the chapter headings is informative. It did not occur to me that the book is written for people both of color or white! Guess that is just a glimpse of what I have to learn.

Getting bogged down. Hope we get a few more details about the murders and the letters allegedly written to the police.

I am intrigued and fascinated by both story lines here. Though I have gotten somewhat weary of the “two alternating voices” narrative device, this one is wonderful. Usually I prefer one over the other; both of these are excellent and keep my interest. Don’t miss this!

Stella the stubborn and difficult one: why couldn’t she talk to her husband about her sexual trauma? And all those babies... wow. I love that her sister Tina comes to live next door!

As good as I had wanted it to be. Odie is such a rebel, and Albert is a do-gooder, but brothers are true to one another. Mose and Emmy complete the group. This would be good on audio as well, I bet!

I giggle and smile to myself at the Irish rambling of Frank McCourt. There is nothing worse to me than feeling drunk and/or feeling hungover, but somehow Frank makes it attractive - for a moment, at least.

Agonizing, the stubborn Stella and her ideas. She seems both haunted and difficult.

Dear Iris. She tortured herself. Why can’t people just share their thoughts and fears?!

It’s been awhile since I read Tony Hillerman, but Ann has captured his voice and also the characters. Really good!

Now Stella Fortuna has reached America. Her father continues to be a villain. Maybe Stella will have to kill him. LOL.

I detest the mean father Anton. No wonder Stella dislikes men. We have foreshadowing that this will impact her, but no details yet. I wonder.

Unusual story, fascinating old Italian peasant culture.

What a sad life for Mattie and for her white little mistress, too.

I’m going to finish this one ... walk until I discover the secret of Gervais! He is a key.

This counts as the creepiest book so far this year... I do not like this genre, still. Good to switch things up a bit. Dr. Anna Fox is a mess!

This was rejected by George, so I am giving it a try. So far, it’s interesting. Agoraphobia, plus some foreshadowing of things are not as they seem!

I love this! The three brothers and the weird roommate of the parents continue to unfold in interesting ways. Again, the only trouble w/ audiobooks is that I can’t note a quote that’s memorable before I lose track of the story! Some good life lessons already!
