I love the narrator’s voice and the country boy antics of the young man, but I am increasingly troubled by the racist portrayals and paternalistic attitudes. It’s part of the culture of the times, 1930’s in rural Georgia, but it still makes me uncomfortable today. Sambo as a nickname for the white son of a white community leader is not a bit funny, to me.
