What a perfect day for this story, narrated by the author.

I love the narrator’s voice and the country boy antics of the young man, but I am increasingly troubled by the racist portrayals and paternalistic attitudes. It’s part of the culture of the times, 1930’s in rural Georgia, but it still makes me uncomfortable today. Sambo as a nickname for the white son of a white community leader is not a bit funny, to me.

Katie Content: what a name. Along w/ Evie and Tinker, I can’t wait to see what happens.

3 generations: Fareeda, mother-in-law; Isra, daughter-in-law and Sarah, daughter; Deya and her 3 sisters, children of Isra. How they believe about women’s roles/duties, choices and lack of - horrible to be so trapped and afraid. Secrets unfold.

I like Russ and I really like Clare. I hate that it appears they’re about to commit adultery.

All the secrets slowly revealed except Hannah’s - could be a hint. Hope not.

Now adding a trip to Vermont for the sap gathering as an item on my bucket list. The story of a woman awakening from a brain injury is also good.

Ahh. The audio book is so interesting. The social issues of the 1950’s are just part of the intrigue: the fact that marriage between a white girl and an Asian man is illegal; Marilyn’s change from an independent pre-med student to a fearful suburban mother... can’t wait to get back to it.

Delightful to hear Obama read his own words! Personal, vulnerable, too. He was quite a cocky young man - but one must have considerable ego to run for President. I hope I can get through the entirety of the book.

This is really interesting! I keep thinking about hearing Piccoult in person, thinking about the research and background needed to write the story. Mariah is a woman who is so insecure - until the crisis with Faith gives her courage and strength. Love her progress!

Eleanor - I had no idea that she was shaped by such manipulative, strong personalities. The liaisons and extramarital relationships seem pathetic, looking back. Separate residences and public personas do not a happy life make.

Oh what a sweet story, despite Eudora’s heartbreaks.

Sam has ocular albinism (red pupils). His mother’s Catholic faith makes her sure he is destined for an extraordinary life.

Eudora thinks she is ready to die - unwilling to face undignified aging and “adult nappies.” Then she meets Rose, age 10 (seems about 7) and an old widower named Stanley.

Tragic, yet beautifully told. I love AhBooNee (my spelling) and her spirit. The fear and confusion are so vivid.
