What a masterpiece, telling the infamous Salem story from the perspective of Tituba. Those little girls were so unkind, so manipulative!

What a great choice for audio! I want to speak a Nigerian-accented broken-English dialect like the other “children’s” who are children indeed.

Compared to book of Job, Hayden is a man who can’t seem to get a break - or avoid the choices that bring bad things his way. I especially wish he’d quit the cigarettes! LOL. He knows he SHOULD.

I love Backman. He says simply the big truths we all know. “Even late in life, people don’t consider their parents might not be super-smart, funny, immortal.” True! I was a college freshman when I learned differently.

Nothing like a YA story to strip truth down to its most palatable. I have wanted to read this one for a long time. Claudia and her brother Jamie run away and hide “in plain sight” in NY Metropolitan Museum. Claudia is actually trying to find herself, to have a great adventure. In fact, she is trying to find herself and figure out what makes her unique. Jamie is hilarious...

The more I listen, the more I love this. Jasper and his flat affect is the best!

I love this book, with the historical characters injected into a fictionalized (based on fact) situation in MI. Our heroine’s middle name of Klobochar is familiar b/c of the current Senator Amy Klobochar. Fun to trace the roots of things. Important to consider one’s beliefs about capitalism and socialism, about allowing free enterprise but taking care of the human needs and decent existence of the poor.

Annie and the plight of miners vs. the advisability of a union.

I love these women, and I cannot wait to figure out how Marjorie escapes the murder charge. What about Alice and Fred?

Charming! Delightful! The people of a small KY town are changed by the library’s materials and the traveling ladies. Izzy’s transformation is especially sweet!

I do find I’m getting an improved impression of the history and heritage of Rio and Brazil, including the coffee tradition.

Interesting. I am enjoying it much more than I’d expected - and I’m actually reading rather than skimming. The research is well explained.

Dark and lacking hope, so far, but the intrigue and the beautiful writing has interested me more than I expected. I’m reading this 700+ page novel as more of a challenge than for pleasure. We’ll see how long I can stick with it.
