Um ... *keeps flipping pages past the acknowledgements* So ... where did the ending go? This book just sort of ... stops. And we get to the climax and then everything kind of fizzles and peters out. Bit of a letdown, though I'll be reading the next one. Kind of hate that she gave me no choice though! I wanted a more solid ending. Oh well.

If another man had said that her tits were magnificent, it might have been in a leering, lustful way—one that would have made her skin crawl. But the Duke of Clermont was smiling and cheerful, and he'd thrown it out there as if it were merely one more fact to be recounted. The weather is lovely. The streets are paved with cobblestone. Now that she was accepted by their leader, the other kids kept stealing glimpses at her, like she was some sort of exotic creature. Great, she thought, I'm playing Wendy to a delinquent Peter Pan and the Lost Boys of Juvie Hall.

Was she crying with joy that this place had left a permanent impression on the world, and that it was still here in Everlost? Or was being here a reminder of how much was truly lost on that awful day when the towers crossed so violently from the world of the living? So many souls got where they were going that day, when they shouldn't have been going at all.

Lief was the ultimate tourist, staring heavenward to where the towers touch the sky. He bumped into other kids again and again, for he refused to look down. "How do they stay up?" Lief asked. "Wouldn't something so tall fall down?"

It can be said, then, that Everlost is heaven. Perhaps not for people, but for the places that deserve a share of forever.

Such places are few and far between, these grand islands of eternity in the soupy, ever-changing world of the living. New York has its share of forever-places. The greatest of these stood near Manhattan's southern-most tip: The two gray brothers to the green statue in the bay.

"I never knew buildings like that existed," Lief said.

Allie sighed. "They don't exist," she said. "At least ... not anymore."

Lief could tell the sadness in her voice went straight down to the center of the earth.

The towers of midtown Manhattan would have taken Lief's breath away, if he indeed had breath to be stolen. But the most wondrous sights of all where the two silver towers he saw glimmering in the light of dawn as they neared the southern tip of the city. The two towers were identical monoliths, steel and glass twins reflecting a silvery light of daybreak.

Oh man, this is going to be a rough spot to get through.

His father had been an alcoholic who found God, and it changed his life. His mother was into new age stuff, and believed in reincarnation and crystals. Nick always found himself caught in some uncomfortable in-between. He had faith, though—that is to say, he deeply believed that someday he'd find something to deeply believe.

I envy him for still having the faith that he'll someday find his something to believe.

Getting close to finishing a few books ... what have you guys read recently that blew you away?

I don't know about you guys, but I don't think I could sit down for a cheery breakfast with my father, my maid, and the guy who sexually assaulted me the night prior.

"When I read, I feel emotion all on my own. Emotion no living person is making me feel. To me, it almost seems more real, because I know that those characters can't influence me with any power ..."

Such a great way of explaining how personal the experience of reading is (even if we don't have to deal with parents who have mind-manipulating powers, lol.)

Exactly how I feel when I pick out a book to read!

"All right, all right, perhaps he's not the most gentlemanly guy in the world, but he's Duke. He doesn't have to be." A loud sigh escapes my lips. "Laila, don't make me hurt you. It's girls like you who let guys like Duke get away with their behavior." Yes! 1 point goes to the protag for not allowing that shit.

Need something new to read! Any awesome books you guys can rec to me? Keep starting stuff but not feeling urge nor excitement to finish : (

Only two things I want to steer clear of: dystopia and books I don't have shelved.

Now I understand why so many people are talking about this. I'm actually close to 70% done but I want to go to bed so updates will have to wait! Yes, I stayed up until almost 10AM because of this book! Admittedly I was switching back and forth between this and the Sue Monk Kidd book as well as window shopping on Amazon ... But still, the majority of my time not sleeping was spent glued to this book!

Started this last night for no particular reason. I didn't love The Secret Life of Bees, but I listened to it on audio so that could've been why. We'll see where this goes, it's been a while since I've read a book like this. I'm enjoying one of the main characters, aptly named "Handful," quite a bit already though. She's a firecracker.

So, I'm away from my husband at the moment, and then I read today that a kpop singer's dad killed his parents and then hanged himself, then this book ... I think I need to go lay down for a bit.

I have so many books I can't decide what to read next ... Anyone read anything super duper spectacular recently?
