This is really such a long book ... but it's the type that makes me happy in spite of it being so. I just want more and more and more of the story. Love the simultaneous narratives going on in different parts of the world with different characters. Seems they'll meet up soon too. And an old character thought lost just returned. Really, really enjoying this, no matter how long it takes me to finish!

It's been a while since I've read a book with a (possible) love triangle between two women and a man. I like Ana better though ... Kind of unrelated to this book, but a few weeks ago I was super excited about being able to update straight from my kindle to GR, something that would be helpful now as I lay in bed with both my kindle and iPhone. Not sure it's worth the price we've had to pay over the weekend though.

Friends and followers

I have no intention of leaving. Providing this site with free content is something I need to think about though. I will most likely do something I used to loathe: write a few sentences in the review space and then link to a blog.

So join me on Booklikes if you haven't already: http://theholyterror.booklikes.com

Spoiler alert: an old GR friend who left here is on there now ... :D

Damn, this is getting intense! And also more survival horror-like than space-y scifi.

I forgot, I started this a few days ago, almost right after I finished the first book. Not sure why since I almost never continue with a series straight away ... Maybe because the first one really left things wide open and cliffhanger-ish?

I'm enjoying this trilogy so far. We'll see if I end up reading all three back-to-back though.

Started this one randomly and ended up almost 10% in. Mostly started it because I saw it was set in SD, though the ratings I'm seeing scare me.

I don't read reviews before I read a book so I have no idea why some people hate this, and I've never read this author before but so far, at least, I'm enjoying her writing style.

Egyptian mythology isn't done much in YA either, so here's hoping she does it well ...

That took me way too long to realize ... There's a character in here from her other non-Gardella series. No wonder he and his name seemed familiar. Damn it. Too late to go back now. Hopefully I'm not spoiled too badly.

Sebastian! :D *dies*

I didn't realize this was over 500 pages ...

I'm not at the point where I feel like it's dragging, but I'm on the edge. I don't care about some of the side characters (villains? hard to say yet who's who) and I want to get back to the main character and his crew.

There's enough of a mystery surrounding everything though that I'm more than just a bit curious to see where things go.

Ooh ooh! They're landing in Japan and have a Japanese guy with them! Why wasn't I told of any of this?

I'm loving this ragtag group sent off on missions and the mystery surrounding them. Even if this is a post-apocalyptic dystopia, it feels way more like actual science fiction. I don't know if that makes sense ... but if you read scifi (especially space opera stuff) you'll get what I mean if you read this.

This girl had no bag. That clinched it for me. A young girl out in a group without a purse? Dead giveaway she's the ghost you're looking for. Ha.

This is HUGE people! If you're constantly harassed on a review (or know a friend who is) you can now ask staff to freeze comments on a SPECIFIC review. So if you have a review that's constantly trolled, one quick email and you never have to read another stupid comment. Spread the news!

The beginning sort of reminds me of Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts series: a gritty atmosphere with a darkness the protagonist has just the bare minimum of control over.

Her will, her knowledge of herself, always seemed to evaporate when she was on land. Things were so much clearer in the water.
So she sat in his boat and let him push off. This was new, this being in the water and above it at the same time. The currents moved the boat, moved her, but she had no communication with them. She felt isolated and cramped, like a message in a bottle.

It's the colors that will make you stray. They sing to you, the not-blue and the searing light, and no matter how tightly you tie yourself to the inbetween, eventually you will break free.
No one swims only in the shallow water.

This series is just so stunningly gorgeous and I wish she'd write other stories too! Though, looking at all of the detail she puts into each page (look at Google images to pull up something random by her) I can understand why she's not churning out a volume everything 6 months, but damn it, I want more! I suppose I can read Emma next, but I really like A Bride's Story's historical setting better. -__-

"But if he's a preacher," I said, "and he believes in a different hell ..."
Grover shrugged. "Who says he's seeing this place the way we're seeing it? Humans see what they want to see. You're very stubborn—er, persistent, that way."

I like the way this book explains other religions. Definitely made me think of these sorts of things differently, which I didn't expect from a kid's book.

"And then they died."
"Died? No. Did the West die? The gods simply moved ... Wherever the flame was brightest, the gods were there. All you need to do is look at the architecture. People do not forget the gods ... And yes, they are now in your United States. Look at your symbol, the eagle of Zeus. Look at the statue of Prometheus in Rockefeller Center, the Greek facades of your government buildings."

Interesting!

"What you call 'Western civilization.' Do you think it's just and abstract concept? No, it's a living force ... The fire started in Greece. Then, as you well know—or as I hope you know, since you passed my course—the heart of the fire moved to Rome, and so did the gods. Oh, different names, perhaps—Jupiter for Zeus, Venus for Aphrodite, and so—but the same forces, the same gods."
