In school, we learned about the world before ours, about the angels and gods that lived in the sky, ruling the earth with kind and loving hands. Some say those are just stories, but I don't believe that.
The gods rule us still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind.

I really wanted to quote the last line because it's one of the best-written endings I've read in a while, but holy spoilers, Batman.

I liked this though. It's worthy of the hype.

They glimpsed the Folk sometimes, movements out of the corner of their eyes or laughter that seemed to come from every direction and nowhere at once. And they knew to wear the charms, to keep a bit of grave dirt in their pockets and to be both cautious and polite to strangers that might not be human. But knowing the Folk were dangerous was one thing, and finding the remains of Adam Hicks was another.

"No one is ever going to hurt you," Kara whispered to the baby.
She stared at Bailey Riddle until he finally looked up and met her gaze. Unlike Taff, Kara had her mother's eyes, black as a forest night.
The man gasped.
"No one," she said.
[...]
Bailey Riddle died later that night, viciously attacked by some sort of wild animal.
[...]
These things did happen.

I'm loving how this book is making the main character fall in love with science and not treating it like it's nerdy or weird for a girl to become interested in the world around her.

The day was growing steamy, and the ocean air smelled like warm olives.

I really like that description.

"Don't you ever pull that gangsta garbage in my presence again. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Your Honor." That didn't go as well as I'd hoped. "But what if we're at a bar and a rival gang comes up threatening to shank our asses and all we have is our wit and acting skills?"
"Are you mentally challenged?" she asked me. She was serious.
"Not that I know of."
"Then shut up."

A dozen golden eyes on its nearest wing regarded me. "What is it you seek?"
The mind does strange things under duress. I had a horrible urge to answer with a quote from a Monty Python movie, and fought the desire to burst into hysterical laughter.

"Vampiric hypnosis won't work in Grand Rapids any more than obeah will. In the second place, shouldn't we be finding a way to protect the judge? I kind of feel like you're going all Dark Willow on me," I added to Sinclair.

"But it's written plain and simple on the Pemkowet Visitors Bureau's website. It says Pemkowet is an inclusive community that welcomes all visitors."
"You've got to be kidding me. You're citing the PVB's website as justification?"
"In accordance with eldritch protocol, that constitutes an invitation. This seemed like a nice place for a getaway," she added. "I'll be noting otherwise in my TripAdvisor review."

"He's willing to write you off just because you can't have his were-puppies. Who does that?"
"Members of a dwindling species fighting for their survival," I said. "Plus, there's that whole hunting-beneath-the-full-moon thing I could never share with him."
"Yeah, and if I was dating a guy who ran marathons, that's not something we'd ever share, no matter how much he went on about the endorphin high."

Preach.

I haven't finished a novel since July, but Faye started the first in this series and it made me want to read the latest. It's set in Michigan in November so it's kind of perfect for right now. After starting this before bed I ended up around 57% at 5AM ... I fell victim to "Just One More Chapter" syndrome.
