'Grandpa' by Schmitz is an example of compellingly good SF.

Sturgeon, "Hurkle is Happy" - weird. Exactly why I don't enjoy much SF.

'War beneath the Worlds' is clever fun, an excellent example of Enge at his best.

'Showdown at Hell's Canyon' was ... the most telling tale I think I've ever read by REH. Everything was explained and foretold and retold and over-told. Don't dislike the tale, but don't need to read it again.

Corcoran is deadly! Fun to read Howard's very vivid scenery and action prose in a Western setting - he did it well. He also wrote the creed of Corcoran's soul well, though it grew slightly tedious. Enjoyed the tale, though the diabolical evilness of the culprit chilled me, and despite Corcoran's admirable traits, he rather disappointed in a few areas.

studying a family heirloom, this copy is the 1937 full text of 500 images with an introduction and descriptions by William Vogt. so this book is longer than 512 pages.

Wow, nice opening 3 chapters! Writing style is conversationally endearing, cleverly and yet simply shared. Characterization of our protagonist is wonderful. There's been a ton of information of the world and its denizens shared without any dumping, it's been all a piece of the tale thus far. I'm impressed and delighted.

Chpt 1 of story 1 in this book blows the entirety of the last book I read to smithereens. Shares a microscope couldn't identify. Awesome, awesome, awesome opening REH! Thank you.

Hamilton's "Kaldar, World of Antares" opens with a hoot! I'm guessing there's some good action ahead, but this setup is great example of why I do not read this silly stuff!

Otis Kline's story is a smiler. Innocent grand old other-planet adventuring. The kind of story I'd have been delighted and enamored with once upon a youthful time. Nowadays it's worth a smile and nod, then on to bigger and better tales.

"The Moon that Vanished" is an awesome story filled with wonder, power, excitement, terror, lust and love, and struggles of self and will and desire. great adventure tale. only quibble is how easily the big, bad tossed the towel in at the close. all else is a wonderful example of heroic storytelling.

Norton's tale was refreshingly simple. Garin was an honorable hero who was also simple. some darkness here, easily glossed over in all the creativity and simpleness.

I'm remembering reading this one long ago, but it is good to read again. Even the laughable global warming politics works, as Ras requires some earth-related drama to fight. Sort of refreshing to return to this era's storytelling, though the art mostly leaves much to be desired.

researching, not necessarily going green. but I liked this statement right off the bat:

"Green choices that aren't accompanied by green values and green actions are more indicative of affluence than stewardship. Affording some of the trademarks of a green lifestyle and living a green lifestyle aren't necessarily the same thing..."

Great old classical flowing storytelling with wonderful lines like, "But can you pipe your way out of hell, barbarian? Can you?" (Poul Anderson)

experiencing my normal reaction to a book I've become engrossed in: slowing down, delaying closure. I'm glad I put off reading this title, though not glad of my original reasons...though that shallowness allowed me to be in a better place to read this. Fall of Light is an astoundingly powerful book that cannot be read by just anyone.
