The amazing thing about amazing people is how they manage to take apparent defeat and just keep going...never giving up.

Some times science fiction seems rather dark - but it has a point that makes the reader ask - Is this really the direction I want our world to go? Good question.

Absolutely no fun being a woman in Russia during the time of Peter the Great. Even if you were "well born" you had little chance to express yourself or any real freedom. But there were exceptions to the rule - some who changed things. Amazing - the strength of character that must have taken!

Boy, it's not good to upset the Tsar of Russia - or his family. Incredible power used incredibly.

I must say, I love the letters he puts in his stories - so much the way people might really write - more honest than face to face.

So much to ponder in this book.

The going is slow - but there is a lot to absorb in this book. Family history is always fascinating.

I know,I've got a looong way to go, but this books is already interesting. So much history about a country I know little about. Russia has been so hidden - so much secrecy. It is fascinating to read their history and then famous Russian authors and compare.

Interesting history. Amazing how much social standing influenced peoples thinking.

Wilkie Collins is a master of words - he uses them often enough. I suspect a modern editor would cut his books in half but then, his excessive verbiage seems deliberate and, at times, even amusing.

When I read over people's ratings I am always interested to know why a person gave one book a 5 star but another only a 1. I know it takes a little time - but even 1 sentence to explain would be so helpful to other readers.
