the loyalty and respect aduo’s ladies have for her is so striking especially as it’s placed in direct juxtaposition to the passive aggression and petty cruelty of lishu’s ladies. community is what gives power to these powerless women

okay every time i feel like i understand the jinshi mystery i get caught up on this detail. how is he 19 if the babies (previous emperor/anshi and current emperor/aduo) were born 17 years ago????? is this just a plot hole or what

ANYWAY i'm stoked to learn more about the ground and its government (?) and class system, especially after hearing that zanka is a spoiled rich kid. what does being rich look like on the ground? how did zanka end up a cleaner? how are givers treated generally? are they revered or rejected or hidden away entirely?

RUDO WAS RAISED RIGHT oh my god it's refreshing to see a shonen protagonist be so emotionally mature like this kajshaljhdlahj also he looks his age (i'm assuming he's around 14??) which is just as refreshing. watch me be totally wrong about that and look like an idiot

okay since this is my second time experiencing the story i am trying to pay super close attention to this big mystery of the emperor, aduo, the empress dowager, and jinshi, and this is where it really begins so i am LOCKED in. so far i find it interesting that the main thing we know about the emperor's taste is that he prefers women with larger chests and yet he had a child (his first? at age 15??) with aduo. hmmmmm

seriously though i LOVE the detail of maomao immediately noticing that ladies and maids of the garnet palace find aduo incredibly gorgeous (as she is) even though she doesn't have traditionally feminine features like the other consorts do. this manga is really full of women loving and admiring other women regardless of gender stereotypes huh

first we had jinshi starting to see maomao as more than just a shiny new toy and now we have maomao starting to see jinshi as more than just a beautiful arrogant eunuch. her journey to truly understanding him will definitely be the longer one but wow am i excited to track it

this entire situation is absolute gold but maomao not having asked jinshi because she knew she couldn't offer him the same night with pairin that she did with lihaku is so !!!!!!!!!!! she thought she had nothing to barter with so she didn't bother, but JINSHI WOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED TO BE BARTERED WITH AT ALL. HE JUST WANTED HER TO RELY ON HIM. oh my god i'm so insane about these two

god i LOVE how these last 2 chapters peel back the curtain on the pleasure district and really allow us to see it from all angles. we start in verdigris house and see the courtesans there seem to have lots of power, but then going to a mid-ranking house immediately reminds us that all of these women are trapped nonetheless. even if the cage is gilded, even if the garden is well tended, they're all confines in the end

as much as i adore jinmao i will always respect the fact that gyokuyo has been their number 1 stan since DAY ONE. what an icon just enjoying the show and giggling at jinshi's pathetic ass every chance she gets

maomao girlbossing an escort out of the inner court through lihaku is absolutely one of my favorite moments so far. what a great way to show us yet again that she has POWER even in this seemingly powerless position. she's clever enough to know how to capitalize on even the smallest of opportunities

well. it certainly feels good to be proven wrong
the art style is SICK and the world and overall theming so far are very hunger games/borderlands, both of which i ADORE. this first chapter could honestly work as a standalone short story and i've noticed that that tends to be a marker for a great manga. super intrigued, would die for rudo already, can't wait to see more of the pit and its inhabitants

continuing on with my mission to read the most popular up and coming shonen, and this is the one i'm most skeptical about. i'm interested to see what it has in store besides fighting

OH MY GOD so first we got jinshi starting to see maomao for the full person she is after she tells him about the freckles, and now we get maomao realizing that jinshi looks younger than usual, which is definitely the main clue that she continues to pick up on pointing to his true identity. they’re both seeing glimpses of each other’s real faces at this garden banquet i am going to scream

LOVE that the ladies in waiting perceiving jinshi giving maomao his hairpin as him as pitying her is used as clear indication to the reader that it was most definitely not pity, just in case we didn’t realize it from how genuine he seemed in that scene

i think this is the first time that jinshi really SEES maomao as a full person. as someone who has learned how to use her perceived lack of beauty to her advantage to survive in this world. jinshi himself has weaponized his own beauty in the opposite way, to the point where he's so immediately intrigued by maomao bc of her immunity to his charms. but she's not just novelty anymore!!

not gao-shun asking maomao to stop looking at jinshi like he's gross cause jinshi enjoys it too much AKSDHKAJSDHAD jinshi and maomao really are the pairing of all time huh they're both freaks in different but complementary ways

okay first off either i've totally forgotten how forward jinshi was at first with maomao or they toned it down in the anime cause SIR!!! very excited to pay closer attention to how his feelings shift into something more real. second off it is hilarious how immediate the clues about jinshi's status are dropped AND MENTIONED BY MAOMAO but she just refuses to think any further about them aksdhaksjdh

i have become clinically obsessed with this anime over the past week so i'm excited to see how the manga stacks up!! i really do think the incredible performances and animation in the anime will give it an edge but i'm stoked nonetheless. this series is so good i'd consume it in any format
