wow i have not stopped crying throughout the past 20 pages. i am in tatters!!! xie lian slowly but surely breaking and losing all confidence and hope has been a brutal progression, and now seeing him so empty and defeated??? the things this poor kid has been through and this is only the first 20 years of his life. and fucking hua cheng vowing to never forget his goodness even if everyone else does??? everything hurts

well i’ve officially shed my first tears over this fucking story and i KNEW it was coming with how this volume has been progressing. my heart aches so much for xie lian HE JUST WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE AND NOW HE CANT EVEN CRY OR HUG HIS MOTHER BECAUSE HE STILL FEELS LIKE HE HAS TO REMAIN STRONG FOR THE PEOPLE EVEN THOUGH HES COMPLETELY BREAKING INSIDE

“not only has the people stopped believing in him, even he could no longer believe in himself” i am in so much pain!!!!! this volume has been nothing but devastating, the slow descent and loss of hope has been torturous and incredibly well done

a slutty sparring scene MUST be in our future right??? the seeds have definitely been planted, first with hua cheng gifting him the armory and now with xie lian giving young hua cheng combat advice

i have no words i am shaken to my core by the horror of this situation and i know this is only the beginning

mika looking completely numb and dead inside since becoming a vampire vs yu happily exclaiming that revenge is his only reason for living. they are really THE traumatized (finger guns) x traumatized (empty) pairing

we are 0 for 2 with the side character introductions. idk something about yu having his "main character" moments with yoichi and kimizuki just feels contrived, plus their backstories are so bland

oh so the army is definitely just as bad as the vampires huh. shocker

the pacing of this first chapter was very shonen (derogatory) but i'm hoping for more clarity in the world-building moving forward?? maybe??? honestly though we all know i'm here for the non-canon gays so as long as they keep delivering yu and mika moments i'm having a swell time

the brains vs brawn dynamic of mika and yu is so interesting so far, especially in how it manifests in their roles as caretakers/leaders. i love how mika recognizes that it's more important for the younger kids to believe in yu's hope for fighting the vampires than for them to have any clue about what mika trades to get them food and other resources
