An intriguing start that already seems more promising than For The Wolf

It's an odd choice to have things happening *around* the two MMCs instead of *to* them.

It keeps the reader at a distance emotionally and means we spend a lot of time with the MMCs standing around trying to talk out theories of what might be happening.

Quite slow and heavy with discussions of cultural and language differences, too light in magic system imho… yet the slow build of the relationship is wonderfully sweet

The writing is atrocious. The diction is embarrassing. It’s clearly written by someone hilariously out of touch. Also by someone who’s never worked a corporate job in their entire life.

Alsoooo no one from San Francisco says “San Fran” I’m Canadian and even I know that 🙈

Emily Henry’s figurative language is honestly some of my absolute favourite

Tantor sent me an ALC. looks like this is going to be of poor quality and mediocre entertainment value (but good enough when you need something mindless while baking cookies and doing dishes)

So far, this is *instant* insta-love. Kinda dumb, but also kinda funny. I’ve literally laughed out loud a few times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was hoping for high angst and a beautiful write story. I’m getting angst and the writing is *fine* but it’s missing that je ne sais quoi. I’m not finding myself drawn into the story and I’m not emotionally invested in the two main characters.

Is it just me or does the worldbuilding lean decidedly steampunk?

The narrative is one of the more interesting out of all the novels in the series, but my god are the narrators terrible 🥴

I think this is delightful. Maybe because I didn’t read the original series as it was coming out and I don’t have a sentimental attachment to it?

The whole freaking plot revolves around when the daughter is going to find out her mom and best friend are fucking 🤦🏻‍♀️

Similar to why I DNF’d The No-Show, I just don’t care enough to find out

Initial thoughts:
- I buy the chemistry, I think. There’s a lot of telling (ie “it wasn’t like this with anyone else”)
- This is so messy and stress-inducing
- The daughter is a spoiled 13 year stuck in the body of an adult. Why are they friends with her? She’s so annoying

This duology is top tier
