Ear candy

Narrator still sucks, but the story is cute

I'm really enjoying this. BUT. This is a great example of how sub-par narration can ruin an otherwise excellent book. Like many contemporary romance novels, this is told in first person. It also happens to be written with a very limited number of dialogue tags. This means listeners NEED to *hear* the difference between narration, internal thoughts, and the character's spoken words. We are not getting that here :/

Once again, it feels like I’m missing something. I’m so bored. I don’t care to read about renovations. Or learning how to make coffees.

Character-driven novels can be excellent because we get to spend so much time learning the intricacies of relationships.

When does that happen in this book? Does it happen? Cause I’m ready to give up.

I normally stay away from family dramas. As a thirty-something who hasn't decided whether or not I want kids, being entrenched in the lives of parents often causes spikes of anxiety.

Soooo with that said, this book has been excellent. But I'm not exactly enjoying it, purely because it makes me feel like someone is sitting on my chest 🙃

Yesterday’s chapter!!!!!!

I’ve gotten back together with an ex only once in my life, and it was only a matter of weeks of being broken up. I also haven’t read many second-chance romances. Definitely not one that was post-divorce. Excited to see what happens 👀

You might be wondering why I keep reading the books in this shitty series lol. I need a break from Babel. This nonsense is the antithesis.

The more I think about it, the more I dislike this book 😩

- it might be too soon to call it, but I think Babel will end up like Know My Name; an important read, so well-written, that I’m glad I read, but I’d never revisit it and it doesn’t earn a place on the ride-or-die shelf

This book is so addictive. Sadly, I need to get out of bed so I can buy sourdough from a commercial bakery that’s only open for 3 hours on Saturday mornings 🙃

Also the scene in the human pub was a lovely reprieve from shit constantly going wrong

I guess waking up at 3AM and not being able to fall back asleep is good for something 🥴

Can confirm I’m very invested, now. The tensions between the two is 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼

It keeps feeling like we’re reaching the end… Don’t get me wrong, there’s loads that’s excellent, but things have gotten muddled in the middle

Only read a couple of pages before bed. To anyone who’s read this: Which chapter made you get fully sucked into the book to the point you couldn’t put it down?

Random thoughts:
- bleak, twisty, the growing sense of impending doom is 😬😬😬
- poor Robin 😭 literally used by the only family members he has left in the world
- the foreshadowing re the tower… is it supposed to be this obvious?
- at first wished issues were handled w just a touch if subtly. Then remembered racism wasn’t remotely subtle back then

Am I finally in the mood to read this‽‽

The vibes are strong with this story: a murder mystery, a small, isolated town with many secrets, a love story with a painful past. In some ways it's similar to Once There Were Wolves, a book I read last year and really enjoyed. Haven't seen any overt magic happening yet so it's possible that it's only a suggestion or undercurrent of the mystical

Is this a contemporary version of A River Enchanted? Because so far this is eerily similar
