Folks I’m nervous 😬 I thought I was going to adore this. I’m not *not* liking it… but I am struggling to connect with the FMC.

Typically, I prefer very human, flawed characters. I usually like characters other reviewers will label unlikeable.

I’m finding her pretty dang unlikable, so much so I’m grasping for anything remotely redeemable

I’m pretty agnostic when it comes to 1st versus 3rd person, or past versus present tense. Strangely, I find myself wishing this was 1st 🥲

Plodding along. It’s well-written and interesting… but I can’t say I’m hooked yet

I went in blind. The characters are in high school 😶

Jumped back in for a re-read because when life throws you lemons and your mental health is spiralling the drain, you need a sure thing 🖤

The writing is on the amateur side, and stuff like this drives me nuts:

"Why am I getting the impression you're full of shit right now, Trina?" My voice is dangerously low right now. She's walking on thin fucking ice right now.

Wow, in case you missed it, he's referring to something happening *right now*.

Oh I hate him, and not even because he cheated on her, which I knew going in.

And I’m mad confused.
- he handles the surprise of having a kid too easily imo
- he’s immediately handsy with his ex, something he absolutely hasn’t earned
- then he’s still acting like an immature asshole, despite the reader being told he’s grown up and sorted himself out

The third-act breakup doesn’t make a lot of sense. There’s been little continuity with what it looks like and means to be a billionaire, and it seems out of character for Rosie to blow up like this at their first real conflict

so far this is alright, ya know, pretty good but also nowhere near a standout.

It’s also halfway between dual and duet. I’d just rather they pick one and stick with it

WHO TALKS LIKE THIS IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2024?

This isn’t working for me. And not in that “there’s something glaring obvious and overtly terrible” kind of way. More in the way that this is just a dud. The text conversation are bizarre, so much so that I thought the author must be 50+ … nope. She’s quite young 💀
The female narrator is not helping things, either. The way she voices every other female character is hysterical. It’s exhausting.

I love Abby’s writing style sooo soooo much 🥹♥️

Cinnamon roll MMC, a deep exploration of mental health topics, and FMCs that feel like real, flesh-and-blood humans, with all the messy wonderfulness that comes along with that

At first I thought this book was written for Fourth Wing fans. Now, I’m a bit concerned with how much overlap there is:
- a very small, bookish FMC who immediately takes on the safety of strangers
- a distant mother figure and no father figure
- a surly MMC who hates the FMC but is also clearly attracted to her
- specialty training academy
- the association of certain powers = madness

I’m a little bit irked at the choice to make him remember after … that

Seems too easy and doesn’t make sense

Don't ask me why I waited an entire year to finish this series.

And please don't ask me why my mood-reading heart decided that SPRING was when it was *the right time* to pick this back up.

This is my first Rina Kent novel and so far, I dislike everything lol

- telling vs showing
- exposition overload
- amateurish writing
- not a single word has made me feel anything at all

Hmm flagging a little over the last 20% The tension was impeccable. Now? Things are tipping into not believable 🥲

I don’t want to jinx it but I think this might be *the* sapphic contemporary romance I’ve spent years looking for 🤞🏼

Let’s just say if it keeps going as it has been, you’re looking at a very rare 5⭐️

Re-read because Dani said you should before diving into Just For The Summer, and since this is one of my favourite contemporary romance novels EVER, I’m happy to oblige 💕

update: I LOVE THIS SO MUCH

the pining. the hint of epistolary. the tide of dislike to friends to strangers to lovers and back again. the mental health rep. the writing that doesn’t get in the way of telling the story but stills pops with wry humour.

This story moves at the pace of molasses. I've only heard good things and yet I'm grasping at straws as to why I should continue. It's not funny. The characters are just... there. I want this book to give me something other than blah. Unless someone comments that things get excellent very soon, I'm going to bail

I can't for the life of me find an audiobook that grabs me *sobs*

After finishing The Familiar, as a mood reader I knew I needed something contemporary to counterbalance it, but so far, everything I've picked up has been a dud--or worse.

This has been fine. Just fine.
