I’ve stopped to really consider the depression rep, and now that I have, there’s no going back.

It’s pretty freaking terrible.

(Qualifications: I’ve dealt with major depression for half my life)

I get that this is a romance and maybe the author likely doesn’t want to weigh down (for lack of a better term) the story with how dark, scary, and all consuming it is… cool. Then don’t pick depression.

Everything I’m reading is plain. A snooze. This included.

Jeez I’m reading this slowly. By now, I should be completely sucked into the story. I’m not. It’s predictable and honestly, rather bland. Especially when you consider it’s a dark romance about two serial killers 😐

I genuinely might DNF. If you’ve read it, can you let me know how far into it I should read before giving up?

The writing is actually gorgeous. The languid way we’re naturally learning about who the FMCs are is perfect; mainly showing, not telling.

It’s also incredibly erotic and nothing has happened yet.

It’s a whole bunch of interconnected cat and mouse games, the characters are *trying* to break through from being 2D into 3D and it’s not quite getting there

Faisal’s writing is slightly reminiscent of Ava Reid — which is *obviously* a good thing

I wish the narrator did a better job of using different voices for each character. She has a great voice, but I never know who is speaking until there’s a dialogue tag

I picked this up because I’m concerned about an impending slump, and needed something sweet and reliable

Second chance romance gets a bad rap because people think of their own exes and go “hell no, I want nothing to do with them”

For me, that is never what this trope is about. It’s the angst of two lovers who want to be together but were torn apart by circumstance

So much of the language feels like it was written by an 80-year-old.

Does what it says on the tin. Not as good as the last book. Even still, I really loved how attentive Preston is and how well he’s able read Sydney’s body language and micro expressions.

Ugh. This is beyond unfunny. I don’t use this word lightly:

the “banter” = cringe
the insecurities = cringe
the “why would he like me??” = cringe

It’s fluff, and that’s fine. It’s just not *good* fluff

I like the characters, I like the adhd, anxiety, and addiction rep, I like the world.

*like* is the operative word.

Because even though I’m enjoying this, nothing is blowing me away.

When will I be blown away??

I’m unfortunately finding this book quite slapdash and contrived. I understand that we learn more about the characters through flashbacks as we go along. What isn’t working for me is taking two characters who should know one another, don’t really, putting them in a car and being like, well, let’s see what happens. It feels directionless and lacking in connection

Thank goodness I was given this for free from libro.fm because it’s so painfully cliche that no part of me wants to continue.

I will persevere until we at least get to the spice so that I can review that, too
