Reaffirming that smart people with a penchant for swearing are my absolute favourite

First thoughts: this is already way funnier than expected (dark humour, so, beware)

Also, I can’t get over Tim Paige’s extra Canadian pronunciations of “out” and “about” 🫣 it’s so distracting and unnecessary, and I say that AS A CANADIAN

“Something glitters in my chest”
“Pride moves through my chest”
“Something is flowing through my blood”

I think it’s time to DNF…

If I hear one more “something in my chest…” I’m going to lose it

Yikes 🥴 the writing is bizarre. I hate the way every. single. emotion. is experienced as a physical sensation.

Additionally, it’s repetitive. Boring.

Why should I care about either of these characters?

Not sure if things will change, but I think it's worth noting that FUNNY STORY is potentially the lightest and least-angsty of all Henry's novels

This book builds like an avalanche. I love it.

I get the sense that this author has never had a real female friendship 😬

The writing is nothing to write home about. It’s deeply repetitive and there’s little effort to switch up how people/places/emotions are described

How is this book stupid and addictive in equal parts?

The way she acts like there’s nothing suspect about these men; the way they behave around her, how all of them act like they’ve known each other forever 💀

I don’t care if they’re fated mates. She doesn’t even know she’s a shifter. bsffr

So this has a super high rating, right? Why then is much of the character building simple “she’s not like ~other~ girls”?

The poor, tiny (but still curvy, obviously) thing. All other girls are jealous and mean. She’s just a nerd who wants to keep her head down. So much so she runs into a “I wall of muscle” — TWICE ALREADY.

When is the last time that has legitimately happened to ANYONE?

After that brutal cliffhanger, very happy to have my hands (ears?) on the new ALC

Emily Henry has such a knack for creating beautifully complex characters.

I think a lot of the authors writing or wanting to dive into romantasy could learn quite a bit from her 😅

It is unfortunate that Laroux opted to separate book 2 & 3’s storylines on the basis of character POVs instead instead of linear narrative.

The stakes are automatically lower because we know exactly what happens, and it’s lagging a bit in terms of pacing

I wish the professor, who is supposed to be a sociopath, still came across as a 3-dimensional character. So far, it’s just been one note. Again and again and again.

This is such a deep character study. Being stuck in their heads is still making me a bit anxious, so I’m pausing here to break it up with an alien romance lol
