Still don't understand how this world differs from our own: Capitalism sucks, humans suck. There's rampant inequality and poverty, segregation and second-class citizenship.
But WHY. What made this world basically evolve like ours? Why are none of the powers or abilities or even the scales/antlers/etc being utilized and integrated into the society? Even our world managed to get rock music/etc despite segregation.

And everyone shape-shifts into human (or humanish) anyway. So I'm left wondering-- why??? Why are they non-human in the first place? What is the story being told? They all look and act human so why didn't the author just write them as humans?
I really hope we're going somewhere with this.

Not invested in anything so far. The characters are mostly generic+ unlikable, the plot hasn't started, and I'm not even getting a whiff of world-building.
The mythical creatures are just different races? So it's all a fantasy metaphor for racism and biracial/mixed families/etc. I don't know why humans are toward/at the top of the hierarchy. I don't know how the species function. Might as well just be human races.
