“Why not just make less?... Let a few people have some soup, instead of nobody at all. You could do a draw for it maybe? So it’s fair?”
“Everybody gets some or nobody gets some,” I say, equally puzzled. We stare at each other for a while. Her eyes are very green. This is something we don’t even need to teach the five year-olds back home, so I know she’s making fun of me, but no one’s laughing.

"No, I won’t. I can’t. I refuse. I refuse.
I’m going to die.
I can’t. I am a multitude."

As much as I really enjoy elements of this, it is falling into the trap of cozies where there's not a large conflict/plot being built up to so a lot of it kinda meanders.
Additionally, there've been a lot of telegraphs of what the potential conflict and resolution will be, which gives it a very predictable vibe.
Still adore Caz, tho. Caz forever.

I think I hate this

"...And you drank rosemary wine. Doesn’t rosemary kill you?”
“It is highly poisonous. I let it poison me.”
“Why?”
Despite herself, Shesheshen looked down. “I wanted to impress you.”

She was going to eat her mother-in-law for the common good.

"You will get me access to the building. If you do not, I will pick an orifice of yours. You will discover which one I pick when you feel me climbing into you. Eventually, you will be less of a person and more of a suit of clothes. You will not believe the things I will do while I wear you."

"It was easier to comfort than argue. Arguing was the hardest version of talking. You could have reasonable points and try to show as much empathy as possible, and lose miserably."

"She couldn’t even do something as simple as murdering rude people anymore."

"Talking was awful when you weren’t threatening people."

"Shesheshen tipped her hat up and extended one nicely rendered palm. It was perfect, with a heel specific to the thumb, and the requisite number of fingers. People ought to have been more proud of her immaculate hand forgery."

"Only when there is nothing left of you will I swallow you and let you weep in an oblivion of stomachs."

As they left the wagon, Homily said, “How are your legs feeling?”
“I like them. I should grow some more.”

Shesheshen said, “Excuse me.”
Homily said, “It’s fine.”
Then she let out a hot sigh. That was a kind of breathing that humans meant things by. Exhalations that weren’t words but were words. Shesheshen hated that nebulous sub-language stuff.

"It was an article of clothing you could hide in. Why didn’t all humans wear witch hats?"

"Shesheshen clapped slowly, to hide that she didn’t have as many fingers as she wanted."

Aside from hating the choppy narration, something I really miss in this one is the dynamic between the characters. Everyone's pursuing their own thing and pretty isolated from each other.
This is most pronounced in Skedi and Inara's POV, since they have to be together, I find that I prefer their chapters and all the interactions they have.
