Steven Allen is on page 35 of 544 of Against the Odds (The Serrano Legacy, #7)
This books starts with a little overlap from the previous book. Handy for those new to the series, or who have forgotten events from the previous book. Poor Esmay is tossed from Fleet again. Newly married into the Serrano clan, she thinks her husband's grandmother has ordered her cashiered (great way to start a marriage) and feels bitter and betrayed.

Another great book but lots of political intrigue. I like how Ronnie and Raffa did not quit on the colony although nothing has gone correctly. I understand Brun and her mom's reaction to her twins, and like how that was settled. For some reason the Altiplanans remind me of the Basque.

Poor Esmay has really stepped in it this time. She told the Speaker's daughter off in a blunt less-than PC way and now is suffering for it. Much more politics in this book; accurate from what I have seen of the officer corps in the military. At command levels, politics plays a large part, and you cannot piss off the daughter of the most powerful politician in the government for which you serve without repercussions.

This book started well with a very gripping opening chapter. Now it has devolved into 60 pages of back story. I think it would have been better to break the back story up, not puke it in one lump. I find myself skimming pages looking to get to the point where she does something worth reading. She is fabulously beautiful, ridiculously wealthy (tips her doorman only $30k a month), and lives a life few could compare to.

So a little outside my usual reading envelope, but sounded interesting. Started well, with some good story hooks, so I hope the pace continues. I read the Sign of the Zodiac series by Vicki Pettesson which also started out very well, but by the end of the series was meh. Few authors can keep a long series lively, and few know when to quite while ahead. I won't seek these out (at least not yet) but if I find more ...

Still a good read with a lot more backstory and character development. Could use some more action, but it is interesting and gives some idea of the workings of Esmay's mind. Of course, the reader understands that Esmay has just stepped in it again when she reported to her new command.

Work has been busy, so I have not yet settled in to read this book. The beginning starts off where Winning Colors left off - except from Suiza's POV.

Man I sometimes wondered if I had a drinking problem. Rarely have I heard of someone drinking to the point of blackout. I've blacked out twice with regrettable results both times. I can't imagine drinking to black out for almost 15 years straight.

One of my editor guild friends recommended this book. Looks like a short read. Somewhat outside my usual reading scope, but it is good to read something outside your comfort zone once in a while.

This book may not be everyone's cup of tea as this book's first several pages go over horse racing, and it may bore the reader. However, this horse racing part is great back story and character development if you can wade through it.

So, I am back to my fav genre - SciFi. Another book from one of my favorite authors. Only one of perhaps a few authors that can mix horse racing, political intrigue, space travel, and intergalactic war and actually make it interesting to read.

An interesting depiction of the NYPD in the early 70's. Unprotected sex, no computers, no cell phones, abortion recently legalized, cops drinking beer everywhere like it is water, smoking all the time, and (gag me) disco.

Time for another change in reading genre. I do love an occasional good police story if written well. So far, this one is ok - not a keeper, but a decent read.

This is the second novel I have read where the homicidal maniac is a former SEAL - this one whom got his jollies killing prostitutes. Not that I would know, but I would think the SF community would be able to ferret out the nut cases and certainly not promote one to the lofty ranks of the Chief's Mess.

Time to change the reading genre again - so this time military geo-political fiction.

This book is interesting but rather torturous to read. Not sure if it just the subject matter or the author's style but I am not just not getting into this book.

This has been the best Marc Olden book I have read so far. I have always been fascinated by the Orient. Any book that mixes Japanese mysticism, ninjas, an 11-year old kid possessed by a vengeful evil samurai ghost, Hong Kong, and the impending Chinese take over - I am going to give it a read. This book is set in the very early '80s. There are no cell phones, computers, or electronic detritus so familiar to us today.

I've been reading SciFi for a while now so I decided for a change of pace. I occasionally enjoy a good cop story. Mix a good detective novel with Japan, Hong Kong, ninjas, samurai, and Eastern mysticism; you've got a book that grabs me. I have always been fascinated with the East ever since I read Clavell's Shogun. I have read of few of these DiPalma novels; each one has been a good read but not one that I will keep.
