While it's true that for our standards today it doesn't come off as much horror (I would call it more suspense/mystery), you can see how it fathered many of the tropes that formed the genre. I enjoyed the format a lot, because it saved us from slash-of-life scenes that could've been out of place with nothing happening except a clue. Instead, a diary note of a paragraph or two gave us what we wanted. Though I do think the character's ways of writing was a bit weird - I understand the writer wanted to make a nice narration for the novel, but this isn't how normal people write on their diaries, even at the time. A bit more of differences in style between entry writers and less book-formality could've gone a long way. It could've done with some editing here and there, a couple of scenes were a bit repetitive, but nothing too bad that made me feel it was dragging or anything like that, I enjoyed it all. It's a pity Dracula's Guest got left out though because there is some REALLY cool and creepy stuff there that I would exchange for the novel's talking any day. The ending was a bit anticlimactic I do agree but not book ruining - it just needed a few extra paragraphs for the impact of what happened. Dracula not appearing much it didn't bother me at all, I think this is a problem people are having because of false expectations created by pop culture, since he's become a big figure and the protag of the "myth". But this is basic horror format, where the real protag is the experience of the victims, and the "monster" only shows up when necessary. I think it works well.

Finally, Mina/Jonathan is motherfucking couple goals. Even with some of the sexism of the era, they come off as an amazing, trusting, reliable couple, healthier than some stuff I see in romance nowadays (I'm not saying everything modern sucks, we have good modern things and bad old things, just mentioning because for something so old it truly took me by surprise). Now I hate Coppola's Dracula with all my heart, good god. It's Twilight and Maleficient packed in a bizarre movie.

Aunque es verdad que para nuestros standards hoy no pinta como mucho terror (lo llamaría más suspenso/misterio), se puede ver el nacimiento de muchas técnicas/cliches que formaron al género. Disfruté el formato muchísimo, porque nos salvó de escenas del día a día que podrían haber quedado fuera de lugar sin que pasen nada excepto una pista. En vez de eso, tenemos una nota en un diario que con uno o dos párrafos nos da lo que queremos. Pero sí pienso que la manera de escribir de los personajes fue un poco rara - entiendo que el autor quiso hacer una narración buena para la novela, pero esa no es la formas en que las personas escriben sus diarios, incluso en esa época. Un poco de diferencia en la escritura de cada personajes y menos formalidad-literaria podría haber impactado mucho. Necesita un poco de edición aquí y haya, admito que un par de escenas fueron un poco repetitiva, pero nada demasiado malo que me pusiera aburrida ni nada de eso, lo disfruté todo. Es un lástima que el extracto Dracula's Guest no esté incluido porque tiene cosas MUY copadas e interesantes que yo cambiaría por un poco de la charla en la novela sin pensarlo. El final fue un poco anti-climático, estoy de acuerdo, pero no lo suficiente para arruinar el libro - solo necesitaba unos párrafos extras para el impacto de lo que pasó. Que Dracula no aparezca mucho la verdad no me molestó para nada, creo que es un problema que la gente tiene con falsas expectativas creadas por la cultura moderna, ya que él se volvió una figura muy grande e importante, el protagonista del "mito". Pero esta novela es formato de terror básico, donde el verdadero protagonista es la experiencia de las víctimas, y el "monstruo" solo aparece cuando es necesario. Yo creo que funciona bien.

Y para terminar, Mina/Jonathan es una pareja genial. Incluso con el sexismo de la época que mostraba su cara a veces, ellos se muestran come esta pareja que confía y depende el uno del otro, una relación más sana de la que veo en algunos romances hoy en día (no digo que todo lo moderno apeste, hay cosas buenas modernas y cosas viejas malas, lo menciono porque me sorprendió en un texto tan viejo). Ahora odio el Dracula de Coppola con toda my alma, diox. Es Crepúsculo y Maleficient empaquetados en un film bizarro. ...more "
