The title also immediately caught my attention. I thought it was curious and intriguing. And a few chapters in, I realized just how funny, clever, and accurate, it actually is.

Overall, I had fun reading this book. The social media culture, influencer personalities, AI references, internet jargon, and online discourse all felt very current, like this story could have happened last week. And that’s sort of what sets it apart.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the protagonist. She felt believable and well-rounded, and I actually forgot for a while that the author was a man, which is probably the biggest compliment I can give here.

She was confident without being over-the-top, stood up for herself without becoming abrasive, and, unlike many sleuths, she actually stopped to think before acting. She approached people intelligently instead of charging in impulsively, which made following her investigation much more enjoyable.

Another thing I also appreciated is how well this worked as a standalone. I hadn’t read the first book, and although many series claim you can jump in anywhere, they often leave you feeling like you’re missing half the story. Here, however, everything I needed to know was woven into the story so naturally that I actually forgot this was book two until I came here to leave this review.

One thing I couldn’t help noticing though was that the book came out in June, but the story opens with a Christmas party and mainly takes place in January.

That’s not a criticism at all, I know plenty of authors and publishers don’t aim for seasonal releases, but as someone who loves reading seasonal books during their season, I probably would have enjoyed reading this even more during the winter months.

My only issue really was early on in the book, where a huge portion relied heavily on the protagonist watching YouTube videos. I understand why they’re there, but after a while it just got tedious.

I think the same point could have been made with fewer videos or by introducing some of that information through conversations or other scenes instead. By the sixth or seventh video, it just got quite boring, and I had to put the book down and come back to it later.

Apart from that, it’s a fresh and entertaining mystery with a good dose of humour and is very much of its time.
