Determined to save his daughter from small town gossip, Matt leaves their home in Australia and makes a deal with the Devil (Matt’s father, King) to take over the family ranch in Wyoming.

I agree with other reviewers who felt the story between Pippa and Devon dragged on or they couldn’t identify with Pippa. Pippa is younger than most contemporary romance heroines and her angst never seemed to resolve itself. I wanted to read more about their developing romance when Pippa and Devon ‘lived’ together on his ranch, but those 3-4 weeks were skimmed over as if readers didn’t need to know the details. But those are usually the details that convince me the hero/heroine are destined to be together. There are enough character traits revealed in the beginning to let readers know this could be a good match: Pippa is a gentle, kind soul, good with animals, but because of her father’s over-protectiveness has been hurt by her baby’s father. Devon also seems gentle, good with animals, but because Devon is a child from his mother’s affair, he’s always felt different from his other brothers. Put these two fragile souls together in an isolated mountain cabin and let the magic happen. But we never get to read about it. *Sad face*

I actually ended up wanting to read more about Matt and his high school sweet heart, Jennie Hart. Matt Grayhawk was the only character who changed throughout the story and his evolution is obvious when he commits to staying out of Pippa’s life, but letting her know he’d always be there for her. What a great father! And also hero material.

Overall, this book taught me not to let minor characters take over a story. The focus of this romance was supposed to have been Pippa and Devon, but I felt like Matt and Jennie took over – which is understandable because their story had more conflict (external and internal) that I love to read. ...more "
