Oh, I'd LOVE TO hear more about your trip, Reggie! You must have had so much fun and I can't even begin to imagine the beautiful scenery! I tried to look at your pictures on Photobucket, but it kept telling me that it's a private album and that it's "Password-Protected".

Wonderful pictures, thank you so much!

Reggie The scenery looked Un-Real. I mean that literally. It looked like a painting. My mind couldn't process the images as real. It was very peaceful. All the wild life was hiding from us. We saw a few whales, both humpbacked and Orcas. We got great views of their back tails before they dove.,) We didn't see any bears. But that's okay, I've seen plenty of bears.

When we were Ketchikan we went Kayaking. It was very peaceful. The water was clear and relatively 'warm'. It was warmer than mountain lakes I've been in and warmer than then my hand was! I think this surprised me the most.
http://www.ketchikankayakco.com/galle... We didn't have any whales with us, thank you, but we did have a seal lion pair swim by. We saw several Bald Eagle pairs and a juvenile. The eagles have a very distinctive cry. We would hear it then start scanning the trees. I saw a Mink too. He was climbing up the rocky shore to hide. He looked like this-

message 607: by Reggie (new)

Reggie The guides at the Kayacking Co. were natives to the area and lived there year round. They were very nice a told us a little about living in the area. Tourism is closed November - Feb at least. The only way in or out of the area is by plane or boat. If they want to go somewhere they plan on a ferry or plane ride. There is a hospital but if something major happens they have to be flown out,$$$$$.

One of the guides built a cabin on some island property. 800 sq ft. Took him 5 years to build it by himself. He transported everything himself by boat. [Can you imagine the planning that took? We are constantly going to the Hardware store for things we need/forgot.] He has a rain water collection system(140" rain Per year) instead of well water. He settled in this location because it had electricity and good Wi-Fi/Cell reception. He Kayacks to work, it takes about an hour. He just hermits during the winter and works on his Masters degrees by internet. That's all the info I was able to get. You can imagine he is not the most chatty person, so I consider myself blessed with what he did share. 8)

Very beautiful. Very different way of life.

Thanks for sharing, Reggie. I told my hubby and daughter next year I get to pick our vacation destination and I want to go on an Alaskan cruise. :)

I highly recommend Trip Advisor. They have lots of info on the cruise lines AND the shore excursions. We booked our excursions from the references on trip advisor. We did not go through the cruise lines. They were much more flexible and personal, than the large cruise arranged tours. It's a beautiful cruise, and it is the only way to see the shoreline and bays. You'll love it. 8)

You're from back east, have you been whale watching off Eastern Mass.? There is a Marine Sanctuary out there that attracts LOTS of whales. It was a fantastic trip. We didn't see any breaching whales but lots of tails, fins, rolling around.... I think they had mics because I remember hearing them too. It was a highlight trip with the kids.

Thank you so much for the lovely photos and your wonderful stories, Reggie! What a great vacation you guys had and what a nice way to couch-travel this is. ;-) You also made me want to book an Alaskan Cruise right away. :-)

I've been dreaming about a vacation similar to this, but taking place in Norway (simply because it's nearer to me). There are cruises that follow costal line of Norway — I wonder if our Anne Y. has ever taken one of those?

And yes, I, too, use Trip Advisor every time we are planning a vacation. It's a great help for choosing for example accommodations.

I have never taken the whole cruise, but parts of it at different times, and I agree, it is quite wonderful. My parents did it a few years ago, visiting the places we have lived along the coast, I was born very far north and have lived several places along the coast.

It can be a gamble regarding the weather though, it can be rather rough in the open sea parts of the voyage, but the landscapes you see along the coast are breath-taking, wild and wonderful.

Thank you for answering, Anne. :-) It's been sooooo many years since I visited Norway — I'd love to do it again soon. For some unknown reason I long to go far away for vacations (sun and warmth, maybe?), even though there are all these breath-taking places quite near.

Considering the amount of cold and wet we have in Scandinavia, I also want to go somewhere warm when on vacation. The times I do travel in my own country though, I do get blown away sometimes with the beauty of the landscape. When I go home to where my father lives, I fill my soul up with the beauty of the landscape, the glittering cold fjord, the wild mountains who plunge into the sea, the immense greenness of the grass, the intense colours of the flowers. If the weather permits. Otherwise all I see is rain and fog, which isn't quite as lovely :)

Heh. Some of the fancy people certainly are looking at us a bit oddly now. :-) But the fun thing is that doing silly stuff like these weird sandsnowmen seems to bring bright smiles on most faces. And there is something absolutely wonderful in seeing joyful people around you -- even if they are total strangers. :-)

So two weekends ago I'm telling my younger daughter and her boyfriend about getting lost in a certain shopping area of malls and strips malls (one where I always get turned around) while looking for Barnes & Noble, and instead stumbling upon (well, not exactly stumbling, since I was driving) the wine mega-store that claimed to carry orgeat syrup, which is a key ingredient in the Japanese Cocktail I've been planning to mix up since Blood Red Butterfly came out a year ago. Anyway, no orgeat syrup, but I picked up a nice bottle of Armagnac. So this week, my daughter drops by with... a bottle of orgeat that her boyfriend found online and ordered for me!

HJ | 3603 comments Love how the tablecloth complements the title of the book! Are you going to look for other cocktails which use orgeat? How kind of your daughter's boyfriend.
