Hello! although I can only go on the internet every fortnight I love to read and so I'm still going to particapate in any challenges!

message 302: by Neisha (new)

Neisha (evenia) | 9 comments Hey everyone, I'm Neisha.

I have two young kids (a soon-to-be three year-old and a 4 month-old) so I haven't had the time to do a lot of reading lately. When I was younger though, I was an avid reader, so I'm joining this group to help me get back in to it.

For the first time in my adult life, I am not working, though I am a full-time student, so I will FINALLY have to time for my projects

Nice to meet you all.

message 303: by Shawna (new)

Shawna Seed (skseed) | 303 comments Looks like I'm the second Shawna to sign up in two days. What are the odds?

I'm an editor by day, writer by night and book reviewer in between. I always mean to keep track of everything I read in a year and then never do, so I'm hoping this group will keep me on task.

I like literary fiction, thrillers and mysteries.

message 304: by Louise (new)

Louise | 2 comments Hi, I'm Louise. I returned to reading last year after finishing a decade of university study, during which I struggled to read anything more challenging than Harry Potter and the Twilight series! (It's hard finding time and energy for anything else after a day of reading textbooks and journal articles!) I've remembered now how much I love reading, and using goodreads to track my progress and find me books has been great. I'll be interested to hear how others go, and get recommendations for new books to try :).

message 305: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments It's so exciting to see all the new faces! Welcome, all. I'm looking forward to getting to know you better.

Katrina, Flowers in the Attic is the first adult book I read too! My mom had it on her bookshelf. I DEFINITELY didn't understand it completely at the time either and can definitely relate to your sense of accomplishment after finishing it.

message 306: by Squirrel (new)

Squirrel (squirrelysquirrel) | 53 comments Hi all, I'm Squirrel. I'm currently an engineering undergrad. Last semester, I accumulated a lot of books that I want to read, but only got around to a few of them. I'm hoping to actually get through those books (and more) this upcoming year. I love keeping a record of which books I've read and what I thought about them, so this group should be very nice for that.

I also really like the themed challenges posted. I tend to stay within certain genres (namely science fiction, science, occasional fantasy, classics, and literary fiction), and so getting myself to do one of those challenges will be a good way to expand my horizons.

message 307: by Vicky (new)

Vicky | 3 comments Hi! My name is Vicky. I Love to read anything with words, and since I have just graduated from college, I am happy to be able to read books that I enjoy reading and do not have to take a test on. I am looking forward to getting to share thoughts and ideas with you all, and to being introduced to some great new books. Happy New Year and happy reading!

message 308: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Vogwill | 4 comments Hi,
My name is Alexis. I'm a marketing student. I love novels that deals with romance. Not dirty romance novel (lol), more like Nicholas sparks etc. My favorite author at the moment is John Green.

I found this group while navigating through this site. I'm new to Goodreads and still getting use to it. I'm excited to participate in this group:)

message 309: by Hilary (new)

Hilary Hi my name is Hilary. I graduated from Texas A&M in 2011 with a double major in English Literature and History. I am currently a stay-at-home mom to my darling 1 year old William.

Jenny*=^.^=CrazyKatLady=^.^=*InMO (jennycrazykatladyinmo) Hi my name is Jenn and I am a part time home maker part time sandwich maker. I have a Fiancee and an 8 year old soon to be step daughter that keep me quite busy. We also have 2 cats.
I have loved to read since I was a little girl. Right now I am deeply in love with HF, usually set in the Victorian era. I also enjoy SciFi and some Fantasy. Glad to be here and will be interested to see if I can reach my goal for 2013!

message 311: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Treadway | 5 comments Hello. I'm going by the name of Treadway bc there are too many Jennifers in the world. Reading is kind of a minefield for me bc of a minor OCD quirk which won't allow me to stop reading a book until I've finished it, even if I dislike it. So I keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. I read an awful Simone de Beauvoir biography which scarred me so much I couldn't pick up a book of months. Reading it was worse than washing dishes. But I powered through it and am currently in the midst of a several good book streak.

message 312: by Patti (new)

Patti Gardner Hi I'm Patti. Have 3 boys but only a 7 year old left at home. I love to read and biographies and non-fiction are my favorites but I read more than just that!

message 313: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (nthnlwly) Welcome all! I hope you find this group as great as I do. ;)

message 317: by McKenzie (new)

McKenzie Harbaugh (kenziefrenzy) Hello! My name is Kenzie. I am an eighth grade English teacher. I graduated from college in 2012, so that makes me a first year teacher. In order to keep my sanity, I am committing myself to carving out time specifically for my love of reading. Not reading for lesson planning or curriculum mapping, but for pleasure. This challenge (and joining a group for the first time) is the just the kick in the pants that I needed. Lately, I've been reading a lot of YA so that I can keep up with my kiddos. However, I will read anything. Well, maybe not anything...but close. Happy New Year and good luck with your reading!

message 318: by Dora (new)

Dora | 0 comments Hello, I'm Dora and I'm studying German and Spanish literature. I find this group awesome because I don't have much time to commit to the group readings but still can choose what I'm going to read. Happy New Year to all of you!

message 319: by Kasey (new)

Kasey Searle | 2 comments Hi, I'm Kasey - married with two kids....ALWAYS have a book on the go...! I can't be without a book...And I mean a 'real' book; none of this kindle nonsense!! (No offence intended!!) I'll read pretty much anything and my fave authors are pretty wide spread! Tolkien, Hardy, Koontz, Meyer, (Sorry - I know that's a controversial one!), Gaarder, Horowitz, Gerritsen, Kate Morton, Nicci French, Bronte (C and E - never read an A but probably should....!) I could go on....But I won't...! xx

message 320: by Diane (new)

Diane (didi3023) | 6 comments Hello! I joined a bit ago and am just now getting around to posting. I have been in Goodreads for awhile and enjoy the site, seeing what other people are reading, their thoughts on books and what they are planning to read. it gives me good ideas for my own reading. I read 34 books last year that I posted in Goodreads and my challenge for this year is 34; I'll see if I can surpass that! I work two jobs, have three children and three grandchildren so I keep myself pretty busy.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments Hello!

My name is Stefani, I'm 22, living in Scotland and studying to be a journalist.

I read anything and everything, my passion for reading started with Roald Dahl when I was young and my favourite authors now are Christopher Brookmyre and Jasper Fforde.

I love funny crime books, dystopias, fantasy books and have recently been thrown into the world of comic books.

message 322: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Welcome, all! It's so exciting to see how many people joined the group in just the last 24 hours.

The group isn't normally quite this in flux, but we're doing our 2012 to 2013 clean up at the moment. Please bear with us. :)

message 323: by Emily (new)

Emily (mswindowshopper) | 27 comments Happy 2013, newfound friends! I'm a 27 year-old chick with two dogs and an awesome husband of 2 years. We've settled into a nighttime routine of dinner then video games (him) and reading (me). This -- two years after college graduation -- seems like a perfect year to start tracking my progress through my bookshelves.

I love all kinds of fiction and spent most of 2012 reading fantasy ([[Robert Jordan]], [[George R.R. Martin]], [[Diana Gabaldon]], [[J.R.R. Tolkien]]). This year I'd like to expand my horizons with more classics and historical fiction (more [[James Clavell]]!) while also targeting the non-fiction shelves.

I plan to merge my reading resolution with the get-organized/tackle-the-clutter one so my goal is to tackle those tomes collecting dust on my bookshelves. That being said, I'm not averse to book suggestions; on the contrary, I'd LOVE some book buddies to travel this dusty (from the long-untouched books; keep up!) road with me!

message 324: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1 comments I'm Chrissy, married for 11 yrd and mom to two girls, 8 and almost 5. I love reading but never get to the library or bookstore. dh got me a kindle fire and now I'm back in the games lol

message 325: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi (thecyndigraham) | 1 comments Oh! To read makes the day grow shorter. But the minutes pass by as though on tip-toe.
I'm Cyndi. Avid book reader. When I can find the time.

message 326: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 01, 2013 12:01PM) (new)

Hello, this is Talia from Arizona. I joined this group to keep track of my reading goal for 2013 which is to read 100 books. Ultimately I would like to be one of those people who read over 300 books a year. How do they do that!? You'd think with me being single with no kids I would have read more than just 54 books last year. Oh well, hoping to reach 300+ books/year one day!

message 327: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 0 comments Hello - my name is Kathryn and I have been a bit of a quiet Good Reads member for a few months now but after seeing a twitter post for the 2013 Challenge decided I would be a bit more proactive and where better to start that a book club! I have never been in one before!

Anyway - hopefully I can live up to my challenge of 50 books although I think I may have been a wee bit enthusiastic about it! Look forward to getting to know some of yous on here.

message 328: by Sharona (new)

Sharona (craftylou) Hi! My name is Sharona. I've always loved to read. However, I've had some trouble fitting it in since attending grad school and starting a new career almost TEN years ago. I did the reading pledge last year and finished 44 books. I'm pledging 70 this year. Trying to turn off the tv and put my nose in a book.

message 329: by Harvey (new)

Harvey (jamtheory) Hi I'm Rhianna. My challenge is to read 75 books this year. I finished a masters degree in November and hopefully I'll start a PhD this year if I get funding. If not it's more working for the man. If I go back to academia I'll read lots of gender theory. If not there's loads of fiction I want to get my teeth into. Either way I plan to do lots of reading curled up on the sofa, on the train to work, in the bath. Everywhere really.

message 330: by Barb (new)

Barb | 9 comments Hi, My name is Barb, my DD set me up on this site as I love to read. Reading is not a challenge but this computer stuf is. I am not sure if I will ever find my way back to this group, but I would like to give it a try. Hope to see you all soon.

Barb

message 331: by Filipina (new)

Filipina (filipinareads) | 4 comments Hello Good Readers! My name is Filipina and I've been on Good Reads for a little while, but this is my first time participating in a challenge and being active in a group.

My goal this year is to reach 50 books and to keep track of my reading on my new book blog - http://weeklyreader.blogspot.com/.

I find it really hard to find time to read and even harder to find good books that can keep my interest. Many times, I'll pick up a book that was recommended to me, but after the first few chapters, I abandon it. I'm not really sure what I like to read at this point, so I'm looking forward to this the suggestions from this group.

On my nightstand right now:
- The Cookbook Collector, by Allegra Goodman - On page 123.
- The Doctor of Thessaly, by Anne Zouroudi - impulse pick
- The Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy - finished, but not impressed
- The Clash of Kings by George Martin - abandoned
- The Storm of Swords by George Martin - abandoned

I currently own and run my own software company with my husband. We have two preschool children who keep me on my toes. And when I'm not running my company, being mom or reading, I love to cook so let me know if you're a foodie too and we can dish.

Hi, Filipina! Welcome to the group! Love your nightstand - have several of those books myself. The only way I made it through Game of Thrones was because of a book club challenge. I am definitely a foodie as well - who's your favorite chef?

message 334: by Alej (new)

Alej (booksinhand) | 5 comments Hi Everyone,
My name is Alej and I have decided that 2013 will be the year I more actively engage in GR. Last year I just tracked my reading and lurked on the edges of the site but this year I hope it will be different. My goals for my reading year are 80 books coupled with 30,000 pages! 2012 was 77 books and almost 28000 pages. I am excited to interact with others and always eager to get new titles and suggestions.

message 335: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Welcome Alej! :)

message 336: by Lee-Anna (new)

Lee-Anna | 14 comments Hi, my name is Lee-Anna. I found out about Goodreads last year, but this is the first time I've joined a book club. I've wanted to, but never "found the time." I live in Upstate, New York and I work at a Boys & Girls Club in Schenectady county. Last year I set up a Book club for the kids and staff of the organization and I intend to restart it this year. I thought I'd see how others set them up. Umm let's see, I've always been an avid reader and I try to continue to read as often as possible. I read books across a number of different genres, most recently I've been stuck in fantasy and historical fiction. I also tend to read more than one book at a time and regularly jump from book to book. Finally, because I am also a certified (yet under-employed, go figure) 7-12 English teacher, I try to stay on top of the books the kids are reading so that I can give them recommendations and/or talk knowledgeably about a book they are excited about - yes it does happen. Well that's me I guess. I'm looking forward to talking books with you all.

Filipina (filipinareads) | 4 comments Hi Megan -

I don't know if you would call her a chef, but I have been following Michelle Tam at Nom Nom Paleo (http://www.nomnompaleo.com) for the past 6 months and I downloaded her iPad app.

Her recipes fit perfectly with my family's taste preferences and I love the pictures on her blog. We are trying to eat more healthy and reduce the amount of processed food we eat, so her site is very inspirational for me. Which cooks have you been following lately?

Welcome, Lee-anna! I love that you read the books youngers ones are reading. My Mom was an elementary school teacher, and I know many teachers who would just say it was trash and move on. It is hard for them to come out of their boxes, lol.

When Twilight was popular, one teacher gave her class each a copy of The Secret Garden and told them to read some real literature. (Not really a good way to get younger ones to start reading classics if you ask me!)

I agree with you. The quickest way to turn them back towards the "dark side" is to devalue what they find interesting. I know a teacher in a school I was working in who just recently "introduced" his classes to The Hunger Games. Of course what he didn't know was that his kids had been passing that book around for about five years while he was oblivious to it. I myself like to at least have a minimal amount of familiarity with what is currently popular. The Secret Garden is good I guess, but I think it's one to maybe suggest to a specific type of avid reader you know what I mean. Anyway thanks for the post.

message 340: by Coffee With (new)

Coffee With | 26 comments Howdy. My name is Nikki and I am hoping to read 20 books this year. I might read more since I read three books at once, but with college starting soon, I might have to reduce my reading to one book at a time.

Chloé (fullmetalclo) | 573 comments Hi I'm Chloe. I'm both a full time worker and student. I love to read all kind of book, fiction/biography/history fantasy/realistic, philosophy, psychology, sociology and feminism.

My challenge is 24 books!

message 346: by Claire (new)

Claire TheBookendReviews (thebookendreviews) Hi to all the new members!

I think I have previously introduced myself in this vast thread, but as I'm not 100% sure, I will do it again.

Hi, I'm Claire and I'm an avid reader. I started reading when I was young, always reading books aimed at a higher age than I was and my obsession with books never left through my teen years and up to where I am now, my late twenties.

I'm a huge chick-lit lover so most of the books I read for challenges will be from that genre. I do feel a bit ridiculous and immature looking at my books and comparing them to a lot of your bookshelves! I'm hoping I can soon broaden my reading set.

I'm also tracking my 75 books for 2013 and other challenges, so feel free to take a look.

Looking forward to joining in more with the challenges and conversations this year and getting to know you all, last year I was more of a lurker.

I like the recipes of Melissa D'Arabian and Aarti Sequiera. I'm pisco-ovo-vegetarian, so I'm always looking for recipes that I can adapt into my rather interesting diet as cheaply as possible. Since you have young ones, you might want to check out Ten Dollar Dinners by Melissa D'Arabian or her recipes on food network.

message 349: by Emily (new)

Emily Hi! My name is Emily and I love to read but have fallen off the wagon. My goal for 2013 is to read some of the many books I purchased in 2012. I am currently read The Feast of the Goat and The End of Your Life Book Club. My taste will vary depending on mood so I tend to go from one extreme to another.
