2012 August Pick It For Me! Challenge

I had a great time going through your shelves. I hope you find something here that you can enjoy reading this month.

Thank you very much for the amazing picks, Tania! I'm going to go with

Susan, I apologize for the lateness in posting your picks. I usually have them done sooner than this but I've been outside of the house all day, running around doing crap I do NOT want to do. I'll have your picks within an hour.

Photojim wrote: "Vi, sorry for the delay. I know it's fairly heavy in the SF and PNR selections, but there's a contemporary and a historical in there too. as always, if there is nothing that appeals, let me know ..."

Just let me know. The little prince is very short. So if you are going to read that, you also need to read something else. I plan on reading the historical about the 2nd or 3rd week in August.
If you were going to read a diff Cat and Bones story for the FAC, I am sure we can count that for the kick-ass heroine.

Thanks for the picks. I am going to read a couple this month.

Brett wrote: "I love the picks! I don't know which one to begin with. ..."
That sounds good! Let me know when you are ready to read it.

1. Superman: The Russian Concubine
I'm a big fan of historical fiction & this has got to be one of my absolute favorites in that genre. It broke my heart.
2. Green Lantern: Dark Desires After Dusk
Ahhh. The Goddess that is KCole. This is my favorite book in the IAD series. I've reread until the pages fell out.
3. Batman: Magic Bites
Another Goddess among women (& God too, I should say, since it's a wife/husband team). It took me forever to start this series despite my friends threats to beat me up if I didn't. After reading MB, I wanted to beat myself up for waiting so long to try it.
4. Wolverine: The Prize & Masters at Arms
I couldn't resist; I had to rec two for this one. The hero of TP is all scarred up and surly and the heroine is this ethereal beauty with a backbone. Very entertaining. The heroes of MAA are anti-heroes in that they're into BDSM (nothing says love like a good flogging, eh?) & that they have sad & sometimes tragic pasts.
5. The Hulk: Demon Angel
Brook should pay me because I'm always screaming at people "YOU NEED TO READ THIS SERIES!" Even strangers on the streets. DA was such an intense read. One of my favorite books of all time.
6. Wonder Woman:The Immortal Rules
I was more than a little worried about reading this book earlier this year since I did NOT like Kagawa's "Iron Fey" series. But Allie is so kickass. She's smart and resourceful and smacking bitches left & right & makes it sooo easy for me to enter my happy place.
7. Thor: Dragon Bound
The cover is not steamy at all. It's actually quite cheesy & definitely one you might want to read in ebook so you don't have to stare at the cover & wonder "WTF am I reading?" But the actual content is intensely steamy. Harrison knows how to write a sex scene that makes your toes curl & her world-building characters are great.
BUDDY READS
8. Spiderman: Seraphina
I keep hearing from MANY GR friends that this book is amazing. I'd definitely be interested in reading it.
9. Captain America: At Your Pleasure
The first Duran book I read, I hated. I did not understand the hype at all. But the 2nd & 3rd ones I read turned me into a believer and now she's a go-to author for HR for me.

Here are your picks. Hope you'll find something you will like.
SUPERMAN

GREEN LANTERN

BATMAN

WOLVERINE

THE HULK

WONDERWOMAN

THOR

SPIDERMAN

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Happy reading!

The reason I've been postponing the Cat & Bones book is because I need to read the NH World books. I did start the book once but I felt lost with all the new stuff which made me mad. I should use the FAC challenge to start the World books, I suppose.

Here are your picks for August. I hope you find something that interests you.
Superman
Born of Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon...you have read both paranormal and urban fantasy, this book is more of a sci-fi but this is a really good book.
Comanche Moon by Catherine Anderson...you don't really have any western/historical western on your list, this is a great story and one of my fav authors
Green Lantern
Seven Up by Janet Evanovich...next up in the series and Stephanie Plum is always good for a laugh
Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder...again next up in the series and I enjoyed it more than the first
Batman
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon...my favorite series of all time (the heroine Claire is an nurse and we are all brilliant)
Something About You by Julie James...the lead is an Assistant US Attorney so I hope she is really intelligent and Julie James is always a good read
Wolverine
Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis...this book was a recommendation to me last month, I really enjoyed it and the heroine runs an animal shelter/rescue
Dark Lover by J R Ward...my favorite vampire series and the hero is way over 40
The Hulk
A Time To Kill by John Grisham...very intense subject and all around great read
Cry No More by Linda Howard...another recent pick for me, really emotional read have your tissues close at hand
Wonder Woman
One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost...Cat is one kick ass vampire slayer
Glory in Death by J D Robb...Eve is a strong, independent New York Policewoman, keep reading this series it is awesome
Thor
Flat-Out Sexy by Erin McCarthy...yummy cover
When You Dare by Lori Foster...aplha males and yummy cover YES! Also, Lori Foster writes great books.
Spider-man
The Last Boyfriend by Nora Roberts...dying to read this, just got it on my Nook. (No pressure)
The Gamble by Kristen Ashley...this authors reviews have been great, this is on both our lists, so viola.
Captain America
Heartbreak Creek by Kaki Warner...historical about mail order brides, great author
Sugar Creek by Toni Blake...next in the series for both of us and looks like a fun, easy read

There is so many I want to read! I will read One Foot in the Grave for sure and I would love to do the buddy read of the Nora Roberts book but I'm afraid I can't get it before September so go ahead and read it!
I have heard so much good about Kristen Ashley lately too, so I really want to read The Gamble

1. Superman: For a classic, it’s hard to beat http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18..., ..."
I could probably do that--let me know if it works for you then...

✲ Superman
1. Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
2. An Accidental Goddess by Linnea Sinclair
3. The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
I loved your TBR, everything I wanted to find was there. I have to thank you for that because it made my job a lot easier. The first two books are very good recs for the space opera genre because they have strong feminine leads. I noticed that you have listed the Iron Fey series (the first series written by Julie Kagawa) but I found that Allison was a more likable (and kickass!) heroine than Meghan.

✲ Green Lantern
1. Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs
2. A Million Suns by Beth Ravis
3. Loyalty in Death by J.D. Robb
I saw that you enjoyed the Mercedes Thompson series so there you have the fourth book. A Million Suns is the sequel of Across the Universe which you enjoyed greatly. Loyalty in Death, it's J.D. Robb, what more can I say?

✲ Batman
1. The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley
2. About That Night by Julie James
3. When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James
Here you have three examples of brainy heroes: Lord Ian has Asperger's so he's rather excentric; Kyle hacked the Twitter network and Piers is a historical version of Dr.House. I loved them!

✲ Wolverine
1. Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison
2. Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews
3. Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep
Anti-heroes... who doesn't want them? In Harrison's book, you get a millenia old dragon with a high handed attitude, next you have Curran who's in a constant conflict with Kate and their dialogue is just hilarious. And then you have a detective and an assassin. Perfect combination?

✲ The Hulk
1. Mine to Possess by Nalini Singh
2. Faefever by Karen Marie Moning
3. Carolina Moon by Nora Roberts
Nalini really writes the best emotions, Clay and Tally's book is just heartbreaking. The third book in the Fever series is a hit or a miss. Nora's Carolina Moon has a precog heroine who wants to find a serial killer. Nora at her best.

✲ Wonder Woman
1. Tiger Eye by Marjori M. Liu
2. Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh
3. A Soldier's Duty by Jean Johnson
I'm a fan of women who draw the knife out of their knickers. In the first book, Deliah finds herself with a tiger shapeshifter in her bedroom. Delighful, I know. I had the same reaction as you with Angels Blood, I didn't want to read the rest of them. But, to my surprise, it got so much better. Elena and Raphael's relationship resembles Eve's and Roarke's from J.D. Robb's universe. The third book is one that I've recently stumbled upon and I was hooked, can't wait for the next one. It's about a precog that sees three centuries ahead the destruction of the Galaxy, of the humanity. She puts things in motion to stop it.

✲ Thor
1. The Darkest Kiss by Gena Showalter
2. The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton
3. Eternal Rider by Larissa Ione
I don't know what to say about these three, I find myself distracted by

✲ Buddy Read
1. Spiderman - Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews
2. Captain America - The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran
I'll be happy to buddy read these two with you but I can't guarantee that I won't jump on Ilona's book as soon as it's released. I've been waiting for it for a loooong time. I've heard lots of good things about the second book, maybe we'll enjoy it.

Superman: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. This is somewhat of a classic for me...and it is a genre that I did not see in your shelves!

Green Lantern: Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward. This is the next one in the BDB series...can't believe you haven't read it yet!! lol! ;)

Hulk: The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. This book was an emotional one for me...or I may be a sap! lol!

Wonder Woman: Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill or Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. Both of these have kick-ass female leads!!

Thor: The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton(of course) or Rock Me by Cherrie Lynn....steamy covers right???

Buddy Reads
Spider-man: Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeless...I have had this one for quite sometime!

Captain America: The Season by Sarah Maclean. Another one thats been on our TBR's for a long time!

Thanks for the picks Elke!
I already read The Winston Brothers, I had it marked 'read' but didn't rate it for some reason. I agree, it was very good. If you want to throw another Contemporary Romance on my list that would be great!
I have read one other by Mitch Albom that I enjoyed very much so I may go with Tuesdays With Morrie. I've wanted to read it for awhile. If I can fit it in I may try to read Lover Reborn. It's long and August is super busy for me so not sure.
Thanks again for the great picks :)

Here are the books I picked for you. I hope you find something you like. Let me know if I need to re-pick for you.

I would like to buddy read Gentle Rogue. I have it and can start any time. Let me know when you'd like to start and I will create a thread.

Here you go - hopefully these work for you - I tried to get a good range of from your TBR and new to you ;)
1. Superman
Jane Eyre - one of my favorite classics
The Surgeon - you have a suspense shelf, but most of those are on your TBR as well - TG is one of my new favorite authors
Whitetail Rock - Fran, Jane and I will be buddy reading this in August if you want to join in
2. Green Lantern
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest* - why not finish out the trilogy with TGWKTHN
Glory in Death* - I couldn't tell from your shelves if you had read Glory in Death or not - if you have, then feel free to pick the next one in the series from where you currently are ;)
3. Batman
Catalyst* - I loved the female mc in this as she struggles with life and decisions
Some Girls Bite* - I'm waiting impatiently for the next installment in this series to come out, so why don't you try it
The Geek Job - got to love a geek ;)
4. Wolverine
Animal Magnetism - really cute romance with lots of animals in it
Succubus Blues* - Seth is definately the definition of the anti-hero...Georgina is a bit annoying in this book, but she grows on you, I swear
5. The Hulk
Firefly Lane - I was in blubbering tears reading this
The Fault in Our Stars - I just finished this up over the weekend - it is YA, but real emotional, I wasn't quite crying, but close enough
6. Wonder Woman
No Mercy - Mercy is a kick-ass heroine - a female army Sniper
Magic Bites - if you like Patricia Briggs Mercy series, you might like Kate Daniels as well
7. Thor
Drool is all I can say -

I don't know if i'll have time to do a buddy read this month - so a couple of these I have already read, but I hope you will like them
8. Spiderman
Tangle of Need*
9. Captain America
Letters From Home - love this WW2 romance
My One and Only - cute read by Kristin Higgins

I finished

Thanks for the great picks Penney! I plan to start with Angels of Darkness and then Vengeance in Death if I have time. I have to say though, I've also put Lord of the Fading Lands and Raphael on my wishlist at Amazon!
Katie - I'll be looking through your list at my lunch hour today. Hopefully I can finish it up at that time. If not, it will be tonight after I get home from work.

Here is your list. I tried to pick ones I thought you would like -some from your TBR list, and some that I liked and thought you would like, based on what you have read and rated hig..."
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for the picks. I think I am going to read Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I looked it up on amazon and starting reading the first part of the book and it sounds interesting.
If you want to do the buddy read on Wicked, I'm about 1/2 of the way through the book right now. I like it so far. She is one of my favorite authors. This series is a little different but Diesel and Carl are Funny.
Christina

Great! Thanks, Sue. :)

1. Superman:
- 1984 by George Orwell - I read this in high school and really enoyed it.
- Dark Lover by J.R. Ward - You don't seem to read any paranormal, but this is a great series.
2. Green Lantern:
- The Leopard Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. You gave the first in this series five stars so maybe it's time to continue.
- Ransom by Julie Garwood. You've enjoyed almost everything you've read by this author.
3. Batman
- Something About You by Julie James. This book has an FBI agent and a U.S. Attorney. Lots of brains between the two.
- Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis. Shalvis is probably one of my favorite authors. Her books are just full of sweet romance mixed with great humor.
4. Wolverine:
- Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan. This is a sweet story. Well worth the read.
- Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley. This is a great read with an over fourty couple.
5. The Hulk
- Annie's Song by Catherine Anderson. Probably the queen of books that leave you emotionally drained, but this is an amazing read.
- The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. This is another great intense read.
6. Wonder Woman
- Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost. Cat is a great kick butt girl, and Bones is just yummy.
- A Beginner's Guide to Rakes by Suzanne Enoch. This is about as kick butt as girls could be in the Regency period.
7. Thor
- Trial by Fire by Jo Davis. A yummy man from your TBR ;)
- Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison. A yummy man from my favorites ;)
8. Spiderman
- Knight by Kristen Ashley. Not a geek, but I can't wait to find an excuse to read it so if you want to give me one let me know! ;)
9. Captain America
- Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. A historical on both our TBRs.

1. Superman:
Pride and Prejudice - I read this for the first time last month, and really enjoyed it.
Faith & Fidelity - It doesn't look like you've read any M/M and i..."

Hi Christina,
I will get a copy of 'Wicked' and let you know when I get it. Don't wait for me, though, go ahead and finish it if you want to. I will read it as soon as I get it, and I will let you know what I think of it. I'm sure I will like it. I think that will still qualify as a Buddy Read!!
I loved the CeeCee Honeycutt book, so I think you will like it. Good choice!

Thanks, Nici. I'm in the middle of a couple of books, so there is no hurry - just my curiosity to see what good ones you will pick for me!

I'm glad you liked the picks - although I was pretty sure a few of them were safe bets. We have several favorite authors in common :)
The buddy read sounds good to me - I don't have anything that I have to read at any certain time this month (for a change), so I'm very flexible, other than needing a couple of days' notice to finish up whatever I'm currently reading. Just let me know when you plan on starting, and I'd love to join you!

I'm reading

I actually own the Iron King so anytime you want to start I'm ready. Im not completely sure how the buddy reads work though. Do we just read it at the same time?

You have a lot of books on both your read and tbr lists! We only have 2.55% of the same books, so I tried to do a little research to hopefully give you some good choices. Plus, it was fun going through your lists!
1. Superman
Pride and Prejudice. I think this is a great classic!
2. Green Lantern
Visions of Heat. You enjoyed the first one and have this second one on your tbr pile. It’s a great series!
3. Batman
The Eyre Affair. A lot of play on words and classic stories are brought into this funny series!
4. Wolverine
Ulrich. This is on your tbr and it received high ratings.
5. The Hulk
The Hunger Games. I just finished this series and it is very emotional, but worth the read.
6. Wonder Woman
Angels' Blood. The first in another series by Singh. A very strong female character set in an interesting story line.
7. Thor
Passion Unleashed. this is the next book for you in a good series, and it has a great steamy cover!
I won’t be able to join you in either of the buddy reads, but here are my recommendations for these:
8. Spider-man
Where Have all the Cowboys Gone? While this book is not about geeks, it does look good.
9. Captain America
Mustang Wild is a Western Historical that sounds really interesting.

Yeah, I noticed that our books were not very similar. :) Thanks so much for some great picks, though! I was already planning on reading Ulrich and I think I'll also check out Visions of Heat. I've been meaning to get farther into that series!

I'm reading

Hi Ashley, yes - we pick a time to start it and then discuss it in a separate thread. I can set up the thread no problem. How about we start somewhere around the 10th. Does that work for you? I will post the link to the thread here.

Happy Reading ~ Melissa

BUDDY READS: I'm doing a buddy read in another group of a LOOONG book that may take a while. If you wish to do one of these more towards the middle to end of month let me know and I'll put on hold at library.
8. Spider-man: this looks like it would be good for a few if not more laughs!!
Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That?: And Other Reflections on Being Human
9. Captain America: Select a feel-good romance.
The Fireman Who Loved Me

1. Superman: Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) b..."
Ok, I decided to start on

1. Superman: I don't think there's a genre new to you so I had to go with classics. I suggest either Noble House from your TBR list or East of Eden from my just finished list.
2. Green Lantern: You seem to really enjoy Lisa Kleypas so I am suggesing anything from the Gamblers series you haven't read which I think would be either Three Weddings and a Kiss or Where's My Hero?.
3. Batman: Brainy lead Delusion in Death or ; a book from their TBR that I loved A Clash of Kings.
4. Wolverine: Mutant superhero anti-hero that is older than 40 - the vamps from JR Ward's brotherhood seem to fit that description, so I pick Lover At Last, or in a totally different direction, a book with animals in on the cover - The Dovekeepers, I haven't read it, it's not on your TBR list but I hear it's good.
5. The Hulk: Emotional or intense book, with some anger, try Fall on Your Knees. Or for historical romance with some emotion, I really enjoyed The Winter Sea. Shoot, you read that, sorry, so maybe Mariana by Susana Kearsley
6. Wonder Woman: I recently read Bossypants and now think Tina Fey kicks ass and the book is laugh out loud funny.
Or the cover of Gunmetal Magic looks like a kick ass female for sure!
7. Thor: Steamy cover, you have so many, it's hard to pick just one, but two look even better than one so I picked Love Slave for Two
BUDDY READS:
8. Spider-man: I haven't yet read Dead Reckoning -
9. Captain America - The Book Thief - I think is historical but I am not sure, but looks good and is on your TBR, or I also really liked the look ofWitch Fire , and sounds like some steamy romance in that one
Mariana
