Monthly Group Reads Polls and Voting
The one book out of the four that will be hard to find at libraries in the US and Canada is the Conspiracies of Rome book in the Ancient Poll.I know some of you hunger for the chase sometimes, and as it looks like another one of those ones where there is a strong series outside of the Americas, but not in, Conspiracies will be one you will have to chase.
Dawn said there are only 7 copies in libraries in the US and Canada (she checked on World Cat database).
If it won, most US and Canadian members would have to buy it..or chase one of those 7 copies shown on World Cat as being in libraries....on the upside to that, is that it is first in a long series, so if you liked it there is a new series to follow. :)
The Pauline Gedge one is a series too. There is three in it so far.
Its early morning here. Voted while having morning coffee. Love that Egypt book:) Sadly its not doing well on the votes, but I'll read it anyway.
It's morning here 9:40. I want to read the one with late Rome period, most likely will have to buy it.Interesting choices, never heard of any of those books, except the mystery books of Ellis Peters.
Colin Falconer, the author of Silk Road may be better known to some as the author of

RE: Ellis Peters
Some of us did a Group Read last year of A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury, which she wrote under the name Edith Pargeter. I have been wanting to try A Morbid Taste for Bones for a long time. Be nice to read it with the group.
If Silk Road wins I will read it, but I will fit Ellis Peters into the month also.
I might pledge to read the Ellis Peters too, win or lose. Nice to have company. Still wowed by the Bloody Field.
Conspiracies of Rome can be purchased through Chapters.Indigo in Canada. It is also, surprisingly less expensive than at TDB, if you buy enough books to get the free shipping. If not, then TDB will likely be the cheaper option. Amazon.ca sits in between the two (pre-shipping)Edit to add: This is strictly for new copies. Used copies are even less expensive, but as we all know, the shipping prohibitive.
Edit again: On the other hand, I couldn't find Silk Road on any Canadian site and had to use TDB
I didn't look up Silk Road to see how available it was before but there is only one in all of BC's libraries. That does tend to be indicative of the rest of the country so it might be a to-buy if it wins too. :)

But I think it is available to purchase as an ebook in Canada, just not a hold in your hand type.
Here's the Amazon US link for 'Silk Road' ebook. Discount at $5.82 right now--for me in Australiahttp://www.amazon.com/Silk-Road-ebook...
Update. Monica tells me the book at this link isn't available to her, so sorry if not. From Australia it is...
I never imagined Silk Road would be hard to get. Amazing. It has been out for a while now and I thought being a popular author on Goodreads his books must be available everywhere.
So hard finding books that are available easily around the world. :]
It is. It's a real shame. Worse when we poor purchasers or attempted have no idea what's going on. This one's in my local store and I've bought the Amazon, since it wasn't too bad a price. Hope others get their copies.
Marilee wrote this on the poll comment thread regarding the The Hippopotamus Marsh ebook.Thought it may help others if they cannot find the ebook.
Quote Marilee:
I'm also voting for The Hippopotamus Marsh... at least it's readily available to buy either used or new, though not in my library system. Oddly, it is available through Amazon for the Kindle, but not if you just search for the book. I had to clik on the author's name, then when on the Gedge page, there were some format choices and she has 4 of her books available for Kindle, one of which is this book. I don't know why the eBook listing doesn't show up on the title page format listings at Amazon. I mention this in case others are looking for it. I didn't see any ebook listings elsewhere, not for Nook or at the Apple book store.
I still think I should do an anthropological study of the distribution of books vis a vis online book groups. I think there are few settings where people actually help each other all the time to find the either the best deal or simply to locate a copy. I mean, it was just this month where someone offered a copy of one of the group reads for another to enjoy. But we'll, well some of us aren't bothered by where precisely the book is located. I reckon some have even gone to an alternate location than the more convenient one to get the cover they prefer. Not that I would know anything about that....
It certainly is interesting every month to see where people chase the books down.I know we even had problems with people getting the most popular books such as Gates of Fire which you would never think a million years would be hard to find in the US as it is like a bible in the military and amoung young male readers.
I always look forward to seeing where everyone sources the books in the polls. :)
‘Silk Road’ looks really interesting but out of the four choice for next month group reading, it is the one that is not available at my library. :(

I checked it last night (our time) and could not believe how close it was. Usually by now I post the two that are no doubt going to win....I cannot do that this time. We have no books pulling ahead. :)
Wow! In fact we have a tie at the moment!People better rethink their votes before the 14th. Because if you want to jump ship and change your vote to break the deadlock on the Ancient Poll now is the time to do it.
In Medieval, I gave 'Silk Road' a spurt by change of vote. I'm committed to read both, but 'Silk Road' looks a more discussable book and I realised I want that as the read.
I saw it in your updates when you changed your vote over to Silk Road.My vote is still on A Morbid Taste for Bones, but like you, I will be reading both.
We have winners!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good choices me thinks.
Conspiracies may be the hardest to find, but that is half the fun. The hunt! ;)
That was our closest Poll yet.Only 4 or 5 votes seperated
In the Ancient Poll only TWO votes seperated
And those two votes were two people who swapped their vote from Hippopotamus Marsh to Conspiracies on the last day.
Before that it was a tie.
That was a fun poll. I wish they were all that close. :)
I'll be reading all four books for April group reads. Tree of them ready for pick up at the library (A Morbid Taste for Bones, Conspiracies of Rome, The Hippopotamus Marsh) and I just placed an order at The Book Depository for Silk Road. Phew! it is going to be a busy April :D
lol! Well it appears you had no problems sourcing the books. :D Nicely done!I will try and read three. Might not get to the Hippo book.
What a switch from last (this I guess still) month when you finally got the one book at the 11th hour. They do both look interesting though. I'm looking forward to them.
I know. I was very eager to get in early and make sure I had them both reserved. I suppose there is nothing I can do when someone poaches my reserved copy at the library when it should have been put away for me (I still think that was a mates looking after mates thing there..a librarian let a mate take the book even though it was reserved).
I am looking forward to the April ones also.
two very different books.
I hope they weren't so hard for people to find that it will only be a couple of us doing the April Group Reads. :(
I just posted this message of mine over in the ebook giveaway thread._____________________________________________________
Great news!!!!!
The author of our Medieval Group Read book Silk Road has heard about our US and Canadian members issues in trying to track his book down for the Group read.
Silk Road
He is going to offer a eCopy to those who contact him so you can join in the April group Read!!
I hope you'll take him up on this generous offer, because I know it has been hard for some of you to source the book and I want some company on this Group read. I'll get lonely with only a few members for company. I want lots of company. :(

A bit of back pain (and some wooziness from prescription drugs) shall not thwart the polls... :-) The polls must go on!
Terri wrote: "A bit of back pain (and some wooziness from prescription drugs) shall not thwart the polls... :-) The polls must go on!"Can't wait to see what book selections show up influenced by "drug wooziness" and back pain! ;-)
Haha. So are you saying maybe my decision making might have been influenced by drugs when I chose this one for the poll? You would probably be right. Hardly an historically accurate choice.
...but the vampires sparkle....
Bobby, you should wear a brassiére! LOLTerri, I'll be really curious to see your choice for next month - between drugs and lazy afternoons in your triclinium, eating grapes with sparkly vampires, too (ugh)!!
Don't worry. I worked out the four books many weeks ago...a couple many months ago...when I was more lucid. :-) That said, I have some real surprises for you all in this poll.
I must be on some sort of Hot List with the book shop, not only did they fulfil my order within an a few hours, they had it shipped by ExpressPost even though I selected the 7-10 day regular delivery - free shipping method.Anyway, The Religion is probably not a book to take to the beach, it has a sort of metallic cover and would blind walkers-by (like a mirror)
