If I am here on my own and hubby is away for work, i have been known to have toast for dinner. Or cereal. :)I don't need a major meal for dinner like he does.
Uggg, when I was looking up the mini hotdogs I found these spaghetti dogs http://thechaosmommy.blogspot.ca/2012...So disturbing.....
awww man..that made my stomach instantly recall. haha. Gross. I don't want to see that again. I think there is only so much you can play with over processed food before it becomes just wrong. :)Cheerios are probably more commonly called cocktail sausages? Is that what you call them?
http://www.hellers.co.nz/family-favou...
When I look up images of cocktail sausages I get actual mini sausages. Which we call chippolatas.
Cocktail sausages would be more common though mini hotdogs is used too. It was the Cheerios as mini hotdogs that I hadn't heard of. I didn't know it was a name for anything other than cereal and saying goodbye.
It is looking like I will have a month with no group reads. The two (convincingly) winning books I have already read and don't want to reread. I would have done The Winter King again I suppose, but I have already read that twice so won't be. And I would rather read the only Matthew Shardlake series book I haven't read, Heartstone, than read Dissolution again. I loved Dissolution, but having a busy schedule, i would rather read one of the series I haven't read.
Oh, wow. They have jumped out into the lead right away. I'll also be out of the reads again if they both win. Read Dissolution already and no interest in The Winter King.
I thought at first it would be close. As they were even for a while. But now the distance between the books in each poll is growing.
Maybe Blood Eye is a bit too soon after The Last Kingdom! Although Dissolution would make a nice change of pace for me as I am not as familiar with that time period. I was also hoping for Medicus as I have already read The Winter King.
I've already put my request in for Medicus from the library. So I'll be in the poll losers thread next month: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...Anyone else who prefers a losing book can join me. :)
I too have reserved Medicus having just finished Semper Fidelis. I believe this Medicus choice was the first in the series. Do our points cancel out!LOL
And here I thought you had read the series in order. Medicus is the first in the series and we should call it a buddy read for extra points!! :)
It's a good excuse to reread it. I've read it many times already--from the library until it was due, then bought it.
For those who will be reading the losers, as always you are invited to discuss them in here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...There have been some fabulous losers, and I believe this one might fall into that category.
Dawn wrote: "And here I thought you had read the series in order. Just ordered it on the cheap from Amazon...will let you know when it gets in.

Jean-luc wrote: "Maybe Blood Eye is a bit too soon after The Last Kingdom!.."That's why I chose TLK for the poll. Because TLK is mainly a Saxon series and Raven is a Viking series, so to follow TLK with Raven would give two different perspectives. :-)
Checking the polls before I scoot off to bed. Blood Eye is only 9 votes behind Dissolution now. The book could come surging back. The Ancient poll is a done deal, but it is possible that the Medieval poll still could be close.
Terri wrote: "That's why I chose TLK for the poll. Because TLK is mainly a Saxon series and Raven is a Viking series, so to follo..."I see your point but a change of scenery is sometimes nice! I actually voted for
Blood Eye but looked forward to reading Dissolution first if it was chosen for a change of pace. I'll probably get to read both anyway now.
The ancient poll is definitely a bit one sided. Only 4 votes separating the medieval poll this morning though. It's much closer than I thought it was going to be based on the first day.
Holy cow. Raven is now 10 votes IN FRONT of Dissolution. haha. How did that happen? Fine by me. I voted for Raven, but was happy for whichever to win, just stunned at the sudden turn around.
We have our winners!
And the good news is that the author of Raven, Giles Kristian
will be joining us for the group read and also doing an interview with me on the group's blog. The interview will be up on the blog a few days before the group read to get you all in the mood! :-)
I don't know if having everyone in a good mood to read a Viking tale is a good idea. I would have thought you'd want them wound up and all grrrr-arrrghhhh like. ;-)
Dang! Actually, going by the book descriptions, I think I'd rather read Raven. I voted & was pulling for Dissolution because that's the only one of the four that the good ole library has. Oh well...I'll get to a group read one of these days. I might be able to get it ILL in time. That's a big maybe though.
We have been lacking in Vikings in our group reads for a long, long time. Until The Last Kingdom we had only had one in twelve months. That one was early this year and was Eaters of the Dead. Don't worry. No more Vikings next month. (I must add though, this months one included Vikings, but it was about the Saxons..:-) ..)
Eaters of the Dead
Oh mate. You missed a beauty of a poll this time then. The Ancient one was a walk in for The Winter King, but the Medieval one was a race to the finish. If you set your profile to get messages from us, you will only ever get two messages from me.
*The one to announce the polls are up around the 6th or 7th of each month.
*Then the second one at the end of the month to remind everyone the group reads about to start and to let folks know if any authors are joining in the group reads. And if they have done a blog interview with me on the group's blog, the link to the interview will be in that message to.
I was just saying in the poll losers thread that I was thinking of doing the next group read polls a day early this week (meaning today) because I have a busy week on for the rest of the week. Anyone have an issue with that? :-) if I do the next months poll today instead of tomorrow or the day after (as I usually do them on the 6th or 7th)?
Two is enough affirmation for me. :-) I will start work on the next polls. I have had my choices ready since July.
When I see people talk about some of the books in group threads it is so hard not to say.."that's in the next poll *giggle*"
Okay! They are up. I'll send the broadcast out now. There is one in the Ancient poll that is set in the eleventh century. The reason I did that is for the same reason I put Eaters of the Dead in the Ancient poll at the beginning on the year.
Both were set after the Ancient cut off point I work on, which is the 6th century, but I chose them for the Ancient nature of the cultures within the book and not for the main characters.
In Eaters of the Dead it was the 'enemy' that was the Ancient culture, in Strategos - Born in the Borderlands it is the Byzantine culture and setting that is Ancient.
I won't do it very foten, but from time to time I might pop one of those types in the polls. :)
I'll likely say all that again in the broadcast.
Curious: why do you think 11th-century Byzantium is ancient? It was called the Eastern Roman Empire, but it was a distinct entity, a continuation but not a replica of Classical Greece or Rome. Rather medieval, in fact, in many ways—just not Western.I'm not objecting. The book looks more interesting than the alternative. But if this author includes gladiators or the like, I can't promise not to giggle.
I don't think 11th Century Byzantium is ancient. I think the culture and architecture and social structure is. In fact the underlying architecture and religious and social structure still is to this day.Especially in the borderlands where the book takes place.
I see. I'm not sure I agree, but it should be an interesting read—and an interesting discussion. Thanks, Terri.
Gordon's second book is even on giveaway at the moment.Strategos: Rise of the Golden Heart
With book one Strategos being super cheap on Kindle.
I haven't looked to see what Cleopatra's Heir is priced at on Amazon. My library has it so if it wins, I will get it from the library.
