Terri | 19576 comments Always.:-) Well, I hope always.

If in any doubt of what the book is and you don't want to go through any of those processes mentioned, you can ask me here. As you know, I am never far away. :-)

Terri | 19576 comments Still plenty if days to go before the poll closes, but at the moment, these two are leading.

Attila (Atila Trilogy,#1) by William Napier Mercenaries (The Conquest Trilogy, #1) by Jack Ludlow

Which is good for me because I could not get the other Ancient book from the library.

message 256: by Betty (last edited Jan 08, 2013 08:12PM) (new)

Betty (betty30554) Got my votes in. Terri, when I typed "mercenaries" into the GR search bar, the only one that came up was a romance-sort of book - you know, the 6-pack abs kind. Lordy me! When I finally quit laughing, I found the cover in message #252 and went to the book with no trouble. LOL.

message 257: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments hahaha! Oh goodness. It was definitely not THAT mercenaries. *fans self* never one of those, my friend. :)

message 258: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments What a shame that the covers of potential winners are both helmet themed.
Neither of them have a decent alternative for me to post..so its helmets aplenty for A&M in February.

message 259: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments Mercenaries sounds good. I think I'll read it even if it doesn't win..so thanks for the suggestion.

message 260: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments No problem. I will be reading it either way also.

Terri | 19576 comments I have reserved the losing Medieval book form the library, so if anyone wants to buddy read Niccolo Rising, please feel free to join me in the loser thread. I will probably read it around the end of January.

Niccolo Rising (The House of Niccolo, #1) by Dorothy Dunnett

I was interested in this one Terri, and voted for it. Alas, my library has 14 of her books but not that one. But it should not be hard to get on ILL. So I will try and get it so we can read it too.

message 265: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments I also checked on the other two books. Our library has "Attila" all three books.Did you know "Attila" is the first book of a trilogy? They do not have "mercenaries" either so I'll go the ILL route because it also looks interesting.

message 266: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I will try to get to it in February, but it might be touch and go. So many books, so little time.

That's become my motto these days, D.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Yay Attila. I'm pretty interested in this presentation of him after a trawl through reviews. --Already reading a Christian Cameron (Alexander), so can't do two at once can I? ? But now I want to get to Tyrant in future.

Hi Anne, yes I did know that. I am hoping people will like it enough to go on with the series....and I am hoping that 'I' will like it enough to go on with the series. :-)

What a pain that your library has so many Dunnett, but not that one. Was going to read it in January, only seeing as you have to ILL I will put off reading it until Feb (after the other two group reads). To give yourself and others time to source it so we can read it around the same time.

I really am surprised that Tyrant did not do better. It was on so many GR friends tbrs and it is fairly well known. Even though I voted for Attila, I thought Tyrant might be a shoe in to win.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Anne wrote: "I also checked on the other two books. Our library has "Attila" all three books.Did you know "Attila" is the first book of a trilogy? They do not have "mercenaries" either so I'll go the ILL route..."

I wonder how successful you'd be in having them purchase it if you 'hinted' that they don't have this particular title, yet have a wealth of her other novels.

message 272: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yeah. That's an idea. I wonder if they would buy it in for you Anne? Or maybe they think they have enough of hers?

message 273: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments They need the first Niccolo if they have other Niccolos! And I guess they do as it's a big series of hers. I'd tell my library that's just silly.

message 274: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jan 14, 2013 01:45PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think a lot of 'firsts' in a series get stolen or wrecked. I find that #1 in the series is the one the libraries are least likely to have and it is annoying. I have had to get my library to buy in #1 in series' before.

message 275: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Right. Learning about libraries. No doubt they need ten copies of a 1st. It's only sensible.

message 276: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments My library doesn't seem to buy multiple copies of a first in a series. If it is a really well known author, they may buy 3 copies of a new series by that author. But if it is a series that isn't marketed to them heavily, then they get one copy.
All libraries are different though.

message 277: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I will be releasing the polls today peeps. In a few hours, (not right now as it is morning and I only woke up 30 minutes ago..still sleepy...)

Hope you like the look of the books again. You know my goal is to make it hard for you to choose. :-)

message 278: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments and you usually succeed.

message 280: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Are these titles under the wrong headings? Should be flipped?

message 281: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I will check.

message 282: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Blimey, that could have been embarrassing. Thankyou!
Thanks, M.

Yes they are. And yes they should. :p

Terri, you were really just testing us to see if we were paying attention, weren't you? ;-)

message 285: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh yeah. That was totally my reasoning. You got me. :D

message 286: by Bryn (last edited Feb 07, 2013 03:56PM) (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I voted anyhow. If I get an unconventional Hannibal story transplanted into the 18thC, that's what I ordered.

message 287: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Don't worry folks. LOL. It is fixed. You will not be misled any longer. ;)

message 288: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Wow. The voting is evenly matched on both polls.

message 289: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Although I voted on each of the polls I've decided to get all 4 books. They were all brilliant choices and of great interest. Well done! (as usual)

message 290: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Thanks, D! That makes it all worth it. I agonise over the choices for weeks. I change my mind often. :-)
Trying to find the kind of books that members would read, that rate well, that are fairly easy to access in many countries, that compliment the last months reads and yet are not too similar to the last months reads....so many reasons why I land on the books that I put up. So it is a relief when all 4 inspire people. That makes me happy. :-)

message 291: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Terri wrote: "I change my mind often. :-) ...."

Yes, yes she does... :)

message 292: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments haha. yeah dawn has seen it for herself. I make up my mind. Send her the four and say. "I am thinking about doing these four"...then the next day I will pm her and say "no, forget 'so and so book', i don't like that one. I'll think of another". And onwards it goes.

And Dawn gives me 'pats on the head' replies and some words of encouragement, until I settle on the final four. :)

message 293: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Sounds about right! lol

message 294: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Feb 09, 2013 04:35PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments At this stage these may be our winners.

Hannibal Enemy of Rome (Hannibal, #1) by Ben Kane The Coffee Trader by David Liss

Which actually works out well. There is a adventure historical fiction in Hannibal, for readers who are after that kind of book, and for the other readers who want something that doesn't involve high adventure and war, they have the Coffee Trader option.

If these two win...

I'll be on The Coffee Trader group read and Dawn will do the Hannibal Group Read.

message 295: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Feb 10, 2013 02:36PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I'm going to call it. Coffee Trader is a dead certainty, and I'd say Hannibal is too.
Start checking your libraries and bookstores folks. :-)

message 296: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments The ppolls have a few hours to go, but I am making it official and setting up the threads. :)
