Terri | 19576 comments You know how we tend to call these things early as it is about this time that the leaders are fairly obvious.
Well I am calling it. Unofficially. Poll still open of course, but it looks like these will be our winners.

Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton The King's Spy (Thomas Hill, #1) by Andrew Swanston

Good choice, folks. I voted for Eaters of the Dead. I did not vote for The King's Spy (I voted for the other one Traitor's Blood), but I am still happy to read The King's Spy. :)

message 202: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Both look great. I'm going to try to read them both. :)

message 203: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Me too. I will have to buy Eaters of the Dead.
It is worth noting, for those of us doing both reads, that Eaters of the Dead is only a short book. About 280 in the most popular edition I think.

message 204: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I may have to buy The King's Spy if my library doesn't end up buying it for me.

message 205: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I am lucky. That one library has. :-)

message 206: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I want to read 'The King's Spy' but my library doesn't have it and seeing that I am currently racking up a large credit card bill I don't think I'll be buying it right now. :(
It really is a pity.

message 207: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments There was some discussion about the two medieval books. That they were hard to find in Canada.
Your library had Traitor's Blood didn't it?

message 208: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments My library is closing for a month (renovations) and has neither book anyway. :(

message 209: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Closing for a MONTH. Ouch, that's harsh.

message 210: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Terri wrote: "Closing for a MONTH. Ouch, that's harsh."

I know. I may just go crazy in that time with a massive shortage of books. :(

message 211: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments You will have to book out as many as you can a day or so before. :)

message 212: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Terri wrote: "You will have to book out as many as you can a day or so before. :)"

Perhaps. *sigh*

I can get it by ILL, there is only 1 in the entire province though.

message 214: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I'm really happy with both book. I own "King's Spy", because I found a bargain, but it's the Italian translation. It seems quite good though.

message 215: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I looked at the author's website the other day and noticed he was posting about there being an Italian translation. That helped me choose the book for the poll...because it was available in more than just English.

message 216: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Not long to go now.....

message 217: by Tasha (new)

Tasha you are a tease...

message 218: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Well, not really this time. This time I am not taunting you all with the next poll. :D
This time I was being purely innocent, as the poll is ending in a few days.

message 219: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have clicked the BUY button on Eaters of the Dead. I now own it.
I bought it from The Book Depository, so it will be a couple weeks getting here, but at least I own it now and don't have to worry about doing an Inter Library Loan on this book.

I bought this cover
Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton

message 220: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments As I did yesterday. Same place same cover.

message 221: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I would not have been happy if you had gotten the last copy. :)

I like the other cover, but as you would have noticed, the one with the other cover was the dearer of the two.

message 222: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I am going to have to buy The King's Spy as my library can't purchase it so I will probably end up buying that one. But I can get the other one from them.

Terri | 19576 comments Bronwen wrote: "I decided to go with the recommendations and buy Eaters of the Dead from the Book Depository, which turned out to be cheaper than Amazon Japan. Let's see how long it takes to get here. :)"

Ah..an experiment. This will be fun. For me, in rural Australia, it takes two weeks. Nearly on the dot it will show up.
Interesting to see how long it takes to get to you.

Oh, disappointing. On the upside, it looks like a lovely book to own. Pretty cover.
Or will you ebook it?

message 225: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Dec 13, 2012 01:08PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Wow. I just checked and the ebook costs as much as the hardcover. What a rip off.
At least the paper book is really quite reasonably priced.

message 226: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Dec 14, 2012 02:21AM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments It's official!! These are your winners!!
Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton The King's Spy (Thomas Hill, #1) by Andrew Swanston

message 227: by Tasha (last edited Dec 14, 2012 04:25AM) (new)

Tasha I may actually buy the real book (The King's Spy) then because I can then at least either trade or donate it.

message 228: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Read Eaters of the Dead long ago but might try The King's Spy (Thomas Hill, #1) by Andrew Swanston

message 229: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Tasha wrote: "I may actually buy the real book (The King's Spy) then because I can then at least either trade or donate it."

Hopefully you will love it and not want to trade it, but kep buying the series as they come out. :)

message 230: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Been hard picking the next 4 books for polls. I think I have settled on them though. There is one in the Ancient pairing that I am unsure of...

Being January the books should herald a good start to Group Read Polls for the year, plus everyone is getting used to being in a new year in the first place, so I need to try and channel what you all might be in the mood for. Lol! You are such an eclectic bunch so it isn't easy. :-)
Plus I don't want the books to be too similar to the books in the last poll....
Decisions decisions.....

message 231: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Ideally, each month there would be 1 book in each poll that I already own and in much need of attention, and of course, despite being such an eclectic group, these would win. :P

Of course, I'm certain I'm not the only one in this predicament so the odds of this occurring are next to nil, but it's a consideration, should you ever be at a loss... heh

message 232: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jan 02, 2013 03:48PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hahaha. Hmmm...Welll...fingers crossed I have picked one you own. I think I've had some luck with that, although they haven't always won for you. :-)

I was going to put up this one in the Ancient poll..but I don't think it is on Kindle/ebook. Which was very disappointing. I found it, then when I logged into Amazon it wasn't there and I am thinking it may be available in ebook form in the US, but not everywhere else.

Absolution by Murder (Sister Fidelma, #1) by Peter Tremayne

message 233: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments Hate to disappoint, Terri, but one doesn't interest me and i can't get the other. Hopefully the Feb. reads will be easier to find.

message 234: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jan 02, 2013 04:02PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Which ones do you mean, Anne? Do you mean the ones this month? Unfortunately this will happen. 1100 members now...there are going to be hits and misses with all the members who might want to do the group read. So it is okay, I understand there will be some members disappointed with the winners, and some happy with the winners.

If you mean the Sister Fidelma book doesn't appeal, don't worry. It won't be in the poll...maybe in a future one, but not this one.

message 235: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Yes, there's been quite a bit of luck with that. Of those, I think most have won, but 50% were ones I'd already read...lol

I did enjoy most of the books that I bought though, so in terms of the choices on offer you've all done well.
Plus you succeeded in having me read some about Rome that had naught to do with gladiators, a feat of its own.
:D

Romans. Pah! It seems, when I look for books for the Ancient Poll that rate well on GR, I am beset by Romans at every turn! All roads DO lead to Rome in Ancient HF apparently.

No, I meant the Crighton one. and "The Kings Spy" is not at my library and with all saying how hard it is to find, I am not so interested and to go the ILL route. and of course, my finances are still really bad so no buying a book right now.

message 239: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Jan 05, 2013 03:23PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Okay,I am settled on the poll books for this next poll. It should be another interesting group of books for everyone.

I will probably do the polls later today. So hold onto your hats people! The very first Polls of 2013 are on their way!!

message 240: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Did everyone get their Poll message in their inbox?? I broadcast the poll announcement to all members, but nothing appeared in my inbox. Even though I send the message out, I usually get one too.

message 241: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I received both the message here and the email.

message 242: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Terrific. Maybe GR has changed it so I don't get the message to my own inbox. Phew. I had a panic when it never showed up in my inbox!

message 243: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments I got it!!

message 244: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Good. It must be only me then

message 245: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I did, thanks.

message 246: by Anne (new)

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments Terri, I have a suggestion to make. When you are giving us out poll books to vote on, could you put the author please. I found two books under the title "Tyrant" and I read "Attila" by William Deitrich, and there are several "Attila's" as well. Thanks.

message 247: by Robin (new)

Robin (ukamerican) Anne, if you click on "comments" when viewing all the polls, it should then show more details of the poll including the covers of the books which you can click on to go to the book page.

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/77... - That should say "This Poll is About" with the books underneath.

message 248: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments A couple of months ago I clicked on the title and that showed me as voting for that book. Been cautious to do it that way again. Maybe I clicked on the wrong link.

message 249: by Bryn (last edited Jan 06, 2013 01:12PM) (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Took me a while to figure out these polls too and what to click and where to see which books of the title they are. I just about manage now but by roundabout methods.

Do we need an instruction sheet or...?

message 250: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Yes, exactly what robin said. Click on the 'comment' word and it will take you to the books showing covers.

Also, please be aare that you can change your vote at any stage. For as many times as you woukd like.

In the case of the Ancient Poll. Tyrant and Attila. If you are not sure which books they are, just vote, then the next page shows you the book details.
Check, the books out there and then click 'change your vote' to vote for the one you really like after you have checked them out.

Hope this helps guys.

Just always remember. Your vote is not final. You can change back and forth as much as you want. :-)
