Bryn Hammond Attila's running riot in the first hour

message 3: by Bobby (new)

Bobby There are 2 Tyrants...I assume its the one by Tyrant - A Novel and not The Tyrant

Terri Neither of them, Bobby.
Click on the Tyrant in the Poll and you shall see which it is. It is the Christian Cameron one.

p.s and if you voted for Tyrant thinking it was a different one, you can click 'change your vote' as many times as you want.

Oh that's lucky. :)
I voted for Attila. I downloaded a sample from Amazon and read a few pages before opting to put it in the Polls. I was instantly interested.

Tasha my library has Attila so it has my vote. :)

Marilee I'm a bit disappointed in this month's books... both are basically war stories and sound very violent. I don't mind the topic occasionally, but a steady diet isn't my preference. There are a number of ancient theme novels which have broader appeal... I hope that next month some will be among the choices.

Terri I can't please everybody all of the time, Marilee. If people don't like the Ancient options there are the Medieval options.
We have had 12 months of group read polls. Two books in each poll.
Some months they will appeal more to a percentage of our members, the next month they will appeal more to others.

This is why we run two polls. So people can choose the group read book that suits their taste.

For anyone that finds there are too many 'adventure' books in the polls, please note the group description.
We have to have these kind of books in our polls though. It is part if the group theme/description.

The focus of this group is historical fiction set in ancient, middle, or early modern ages (now including modern history), in any geographical location. Preference is given to escapist themes of epic proportions: engaging politics, sprawling battles, sex, drugs (errr ... mead) and debauchery. If works by such authors as Jack Whyte, Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, or Steven Pressfield resonate with you, this group is designed for you.

So, while 'preference' is given to epic adventure themes, there are also one or two books included in the polls each month that are not epic adventure. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose.

Ben Kane Tyrant is in my Top Ten of best HF novels! Vote for it, please!

message 10: by Terri (new)

Terri lol. So you liked it then? ;)

message 11: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond I didn't know Tyrant had a Scythian connection when I voted. I'm game for whichever wins.

message 12: by Terri (new)

Terri It would save your purse/wallet if Attila wins though, as you already own it.

message 13: by Terri (new)

Terri As for me...as some of you know, I did not connect with the other Cameron book I read, Killer of Men, but I was willing to give Tyrant a go. However my library does not have it, it has Attila. I had to vote for Attila. That's fine though. I prefer the sound of Attila.

It's a wallet, and you're right, so I won't change my vote.

Terri Mines a wallet too, but I had to be non discriminatory and give the purse a shout out. ;)

message 16: by Marilee (new)

Marilee I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn, Terri. I am new to the group and obviously shouldn't have commented on book choices. It wasn't meant as a criticism, but rather as a suggestion. I'm still feeling my way, and certainly don't mean to offend or overstep.

I read and enjoy all kinds of ancient historical fiction, including epic adventure of course. But I also enjoy books such as Ruth Downie's Gaius Petreius Ruso stories, and Lindsey Davis' Falco series, as much as I also enjoy Stephen Pressfield and Bernard Cornwell.

Terri Hi Marilee,
And I am sorry if I came across a bit heavy handed. :-) Terribly sorry in fact.
I had been dealing with a couple members in group that were complaining that we read war and battle type books in here. As if that was a negative. Lol. One even used your post to try and prove that others felt the same way.
This is why I am so terribly sorry. I think it was the timing of your post.
Forgive me.

message 18: by Marilee (new)

Marilee Forgiven... absolutely.

message 19: by Terri (new)

Terri Thankyou.

Maybe next month you may like the Ancient selections better. :-)

message 20: by Terri (new)

Terri I think it is safe to say that Attila will be our Ancient Group Read next month.
Hope anyone who wants to join in on this group read can easily source the book.
We have not had a book on Attila win yet, so this should be interesting. A notorious figure in history that's for sure.
